A USB-C plug does not guarantee fast charging: the adapter must support USB Power Delivery (USB PD), the cable must match your iPhone, and the phone’s temperature, battery level, and activity all affect charging speed. Start with Settings > Battery, then test a compatible cable and adapter directly from a wall outlet. A slowdown near 80% or during heavy use may be normal rather than a fault.
Why a USB-C charger may charge your iPhone slowly
USB-C describes the connector shape, not how much power an adapter can deliver or which charging protocol it supports. For Apple’s fast wired charging setup, the adapter should support USB Power Delivery (USB PD), and the cable must have the right connectors for your iPhone. Charging can still be slower if the adapter’s output is limited, shared among ports, or reduced by the phone’s temperature, battery state, or current workload.

The adapter or power source is limiting output
A low-output adapter may charge an iPhone but take longer than a suitable USB PD wall adapter. A computer, car port, or USB hub can also provide less power than a wall outlet. Multi-port adapters may divide available output among connected devices; Apple notes that a charger with more than one port, or a computer or hub with other devices attached, may have reduced maximum output (Apple’s charging guidance).
Apple lists 20W as the minimum adapter output for fast charging iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation), and later in its iPhone power-adapter guide. Requirements and Apple’s model-specific examples vary, so check the guidance for your exact iPhone rather than assuming that any USB-C charger—or a higher wattage printed on one—will deliver that rate to your phone.

The cable does not match your iPhone
For Apple’s USB-C-adapter fast-charge setup, iPhone 15 and later use a USB-C to USB-C cable. iPhone 14 and earlier use a USB-C to Lightning cable. A cable can fit one end of the setup but still be the wrong type, damaged, or unable to provide the expected charging performance.
The iPhone is tapering or managing battery charging
Charging normally slows as the battery approaches and passes 80%. This taper helps manage battery stress and heat, so a slower final portion does not by itself indicate a problem with the charger. Optimized Battery Charging may also delay charging beyond 80%, and supported newer models can have a configured Charge Limit. Check Apple’s guidance on charging limits and Optimized Battery Charging if charging repeatedly pauses around that level.

Temperature or active use is reducing net speed
Apple recommends charging between 0°C and 35°C. If an iPhone becomes too warm, charging may slow or stop until it cools; very cold conditions can also affect charging. Direct sun, a hot vehicle, a heat-trapping case, gaming, camera use, high-quality video streaming, or a bright display can all contribute to slower charging or make the battery percentage rise more slowly.

Check the iPhone’s charging status first
Open Settings > Battery. Depending on your iPhone and software version, look for a Slow Charger or Incompatible Charger alert, charging-hold details, and an estimated time to charge. A Slow Charger alert means a different charger could improve the experience; it does not establish that the current charger or the iPhone is broken. Apple’s charging guidance explains these alerts and factors that can extend charging time.

How to troubleshoot slow charging safely
- Confirm your iPhone model and cable ends. Use USB-C to USB-C for iPhone 15 and later, or USB-C to Lightning for iPhone 14 and earlier when using a USB-C adapter for fast wired charging.
- Try a wall outlet. Connect the adapter directly to a wall socket instead of a computer, car port, or hub. Firmly reseat the cable at both ends. If the adapter has multiple ports, disconnect other devices and compare.
- Isolate the accessory or outlet. Look for visible damage to the cable or adapter; do not use damaged accessories. Try a different known-good compatible cable, adapter, and wall outlet one at a time. Changing one item per test makes it easier to identify the cause.
- Reduce heat and workload. Move the phone out of direct sun or a hot space, pause demanding apps, and reduce screen use while charging. If the phone is getting warm, remove a case if it traps heat and let the phone return gradually to a comfortable temperature. Charging should resume automatically when thermal conditions allow.
- Check for a charge limit if charging stops around 80%. Review Optimized Battery Charging and, on iPhone 15 and later, the configured Charge Limit. A warm battery can also trigger a temporary hold; Apple describes these behaviors in its battery charging settings guidance.
- Inspect the port cautiously. Check for visible debris and make sure the cable connects firmly. Apple advises removing debris, but avoid inserting pins or other objects, using liquids, or forcing the connector. If liquid may be in a USB-C port, do not plug in a cable; follow Apple’s liquid-exposure guidance.
- Seek service if the issue persists. If the phone still charges abnormally with known-good compatible accessories and a suitable outlet after these checks, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Which USB-C charger should you use?
Choose a USB-C Power Delivery adapter that meets the requirement for your exact iPhone generation, and pair it with the correct cable. Apple’s fast-charge guidance says iPhone 15 or later uses a USB-C cable, while earlier iPhone models use a USB-C to Lightning cable with a compatible USB-C adapter. Its current guidance gives model-specific examples: iPhone 17e and iPhone Air can reach up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter; iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max can reach about 50% in around 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher adapter. These are Apple’s stated tests using preproduction phones and specified accessories, not a promise for every charging session; actual time varies with settings, use, adapter, and environment (Apple fast-charge guidance).
When comparing adapters, check USB PD support, output against your model’s requirement, whether multiple ports share power, and whether you need a separate cable. A higher wattage rating alone does not mean your iPhone will charge at that wattage: the phone’s model, USB-PD negotiation, cable, battery level, temperature, settings, and use all matter. If your current adapter meets Apple’s requirements, buying another one may not help when the actual cause is heat, heavy use, a charge limit, or normal slowdown near full charge.
