For National Rail journeys in Great Britain, check a specific train in National Rail’s Live Departures and Arrivals, then use the Journey Planner and disruption notices to assess the whole trip. Treat any alternative route as an option to verify—not proof that your ticket is valid on it.
Check whether your train is running
- Open National Rail Live Departures and Arrivals and enter your departure station. Add the destination if useful.
- Select the service you plan to take and open its Journey Details. Check its calling points and the service information shown.
- Continue monitoring the train’s progress on the live service page as your departure approaches.
Live departures and arrivals are useful for checking an individual train; they do not replace checking the full journey for connections or disruption elsewhere on the route.

Check disruption across the whole journey
- Enter your origin and destination in the National Rail Journey Planner to review the complete trip.
- Check National Rail Disruptions and the relevant train operator’s status information for incidents or planned engineering work affecting your route.
- Use the disruption filters to distinguish current incidents from planned work. National Rail’s homepage says planned work can be viewed up to 12 weeks ahead; Station Alerts are also available.
Live running information can change, so check it again close to travel and while making connections.

Use live information and the Journey Planner to find candidate services, then compare the details that affect whether the option will work for you:
#1 Best Overall
- Destination: Does the service reach your intended destination, or will you need another connection?
- Arrival time: Compare the expected arrival, not just the departure time.
- Changes: Check how many changes are required and where they take place.
- Running status: Verify that the proposed service is operating and check its calling points.
- Ticket validity: Check whether your ticket permits travel on that operator and route.
A journey planner can show a possible route without establishing that your ticket covers it. Trainline’s disruption guidance, marked updated 7 September 2026, advises passengers to check ticket conditions for operator or route restrictions: Trainline disruption help.
Confirm your ticket before changing route
Ticket validity and any permitted route changes depend on the ticket and the specific disruption. There is no universal rule that every ticket can be used on any alternative service. If the ticket conditions do not clearly cover the option, ask station staff, the train operator, or the ticket seller before boarding.

For a selected service in National Rail’s Journey Planner or Live Departures and Arrivals, you can set one-off or repeat delay and disruption alerts by email, SMS, or WhatsApp. A UK mobile number is required to verify SMS or WhatsApp alerts. National Rail also offers TrainTracker phone and text information; see its travel information.
UK government guidance says passengers should be kept informed of estimated departure and arrival times as soon as they are available during a delay. Check the operator’s updates for the latest information while you wait.
