What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A VPN can slow your internet because it encrypts your traffic and routes it through a VPN server before it reaches its destination. The extra processing and network path can affect speed, but the size of the change depends on your connection, server, route and VPN protocol. Start by comparing the same device and network with the VPN off and on; then try a nearby server and another protocol offered by your app.
Why is my internet so slow with a VPN?
With a VPN enabled, your device sends traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server, which then connects to the website or service you are using. That is an extra step compared with connecting directly, and the route may be longer or more congested. The server’s load, the path between networks and how the VPN app implements its protocol can also affect performance. Cloudflare explains how VPN tunneling routes traffic through a VPN server.

A slow connection is not automatically caused by the VPN. Wi-Fi congestion, other devices using the connection, ISP conditions or the speed-test server can affect results too. Google notes that test results vary with the locations of the user and test server, and that congestion can occur on Wi-Fi, ISP networks or the wider internet. Google’s speed-test guidance is one reason to compare results under similar conditions rather than relying on a single run.

There is no general independent figure in the cited sources for how much speed a typical VPN user should lose. Surfshark’s Windows support article, updated September 11, 2026, says that a decrease “around 30 %” is expected in its Windows troubleshooting context. That is a provider-specific statement, not a universal VPN benchmark. Surfshark’s Windows guidance also recommends checking the app’s settings.

How do I make my VPN faster?
Use a controlled comparison before changing settings. Keep the device, network, speed-test service and approximate test conditions the same, and repeat tests if results fluctuate. Change one VPN setting at a time so you can tell which change, if any, made a difference.
- Check your baseline. Disconnect the VPN and run a speed test. Reconnect and run the same test again. If both results are slow, investigate the local connection, ISP conditions or test setup before focusing on VPN settings. PIA’s support guide starts with checking the connection without its VPN. PIA’s slow-speed troubleshooting guide.
- Try another VPN server. Test a server near your physical location, then compare another available location. A nearby server is a sensible starting point, but geography alone cannot guarantee the fastest route. Different servers or routes may perform differently at the time of testing. PIA and Proton VPN both recommend considering server choice.
- Compare protocols available in your app. If the app has a protocol setting, test one supported alternative at a time and reconnect before testing. PIA and Proton VPN recommend comparing available protocols; Surfshark recommends WireGuard in its Windows guidance. No cited source establishes a single fastest protocol for every provider, device and network. PIA, Proton VPN and Surfshark.
Why does my Wi-Fi slow down when I connect to a VPN?
The VPN may be the part you notice changing, but the underlying issue can still be Wi-Fi or general network congestion. Compare VPN-off and VPN-on results on the same device and Wi-Fi network. If performance is poor in both cases, check whether other devices are using the connection, whether the Wi-Fi signal or network is congested, and whether the test service is producing consistent results. A VPN does not by itself establish that your ISP is throttling your connection.

Is it speed, latency or an unstable connection?
“Slow” can mean downloads take longer, pages take time to respond, calls stutter or the connection drops intermittently. A download-speed result alone will not distinguish these issues. For a deeper diagnosis, Cloudflare recommends checking download and upload speed, latency, jitter and packet loss. Its guide also describes MTR as a way to inspect latency and packet loss across network hops. Cloudflare’s slow-website troubleshooting guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Low download or upload throughput: compare VPN-off and VPN-on results, then test another server or supported protocol.
- High latency or jitter: look beyond peak speed; the server and route can affect how quickly a connection responds and how consistently it performs.
- Packet loss or intermittent drops: use deeper network diagnostics if basic comparisons do not identify whether the problem occurs on the local network or farther along the route.
When should I contact the VPN provider or ISP?
If the baseline connection is healthy but one VPN server or protocol performs poorly, contact the VPN provider with the server and protocol tested and your comparable VPN-on and VPN-off results. If the connection is slow even with the VPN disconnected, investigate the local network or contact your ISP. A useful comparison includes the test service, device, network and approximate time of each run; it helps separate a repeatable issue from normal variation.

What should I compare if I am considering another VPN?
Use your own device and connection to compare options rather than assuming a provider or protocol will be fastest for everyone. Useful criteria include:
- Measured throughput, latency, jitter and stability on your setup.
- Nearby server locations and how those servers perform from your location.
- Which protocols the service supports and whether its app lets you switch between them.
- Clear troubleshooting guidance and support that can investigate a specific server or protocol.
These are practical comparison criteria, not a ranking of VPN services. Results and app features can vary by provider, device, location and time.
