The exact controls and categories depend on the board. A report requests moderator review; it does not guarantee removal or other action.
How to report a post or comment
- Open the specific item. Go to the post or comment that concerns you. Reporting the item itself helps reviewers see what you mean.
- Open its options menu. Look for an overflow, three-dot, or more menu beside the post or comment, then choose Report or the board’s equivalent.
- Choose the closest accurate reason. Depending on the available choices, that might be spam, scam-like behavior, impersonation, abuse, or misleading content. Do not select a reason that does not fit just to get attention.
- Provide concise context if prompted. State what seems suspicious and why. Stick to details you can support; do not present a suspicion as established fact.
- Submit the report. The platform will review it under its rules and available processes. If the concern is about an account’s broader conduct rather than one item, use a separate account-report option if the board provides one.
- Use separate contact controls if needed. If you want to stop seeing or hearing from the account, block it or use the board’s other available contact controls.

These platform examples illustrate different help guidance; their menus and categories are not universal instructions for every message board. If the labels below do not match what you see, check the current help page for your board.

Reddit says reporting a specific post or comment is the best way to flag a suspected violation of Reddit Rules or a community’s rules. On reddit.com or in the app, open the item’s overflow menu and select Report. Reddit also describes blocking the reported account as a way to cut off contact. See Reddit’s reporting instructions.

On X, open the post’s more icon, select Report post, and follow the prompts. X says the process gathers relevant information and may request more details. A post report concerns a particular post; X distinguishes this from an account report for suspected violations not tied to a post, List, or Direct Message. Reporting a post does not automatically suspend the account, and X says reporters may or may not receive an outcome notification, depending on the issue. See X’s reporting instructions.

Facebook says it may hide or remove reported content if it finds a Community Standards violation. Users can check the message Facebook sends about its decision. A report is not itself a determination that the content violates those standards. See Facebook’s explanation of decisions on reported content.
What to expect after reporting
A report is a request for review, not a promise that a post will be removed, that its author will be identified, or that an account will be suspended. Platforms assess reports against their own rules and may choose different enforcement responses. X explicitly says reporting a post or List does not automatically suspend an account; Facebook says it may remove or hide content when it finds a violation. Avoid assuming a report failed simply because you do not receive a notification—X says outcome feedback is not guaranteed for every issue.

If the report option is missing
- Check the post’s or comment’s full options menu; the control may be labeled differently or placed elsewhere in the app.
- Look up the board’s current help instructions, since interface labels and report categories can change.
- If the concern is account-wide, check whether the board has a separate account-report path rather than reporting an unrelated item.
- Use blocking or other available contact controls separately if your immediate goal is to limit contact.
