Don’t assume a VPN subscription includes a password manager and encrypted file storage: benefits depend on the provider, your exact plan and your country. First confirm what your account includes, then evaluate the password vault and file storage as separate tools—especially their encryption, recovery, sharing, device support and limits.
Start by confirming what your VPN plan actually includes
Check the plan details for your country and the exact tier you intend to buy. Providers can offer different bundles by region, and plan names and benefits can change. A feature page describes what a product says it offers; your account or current regional plan page is the better place to verify your entitlement.

For example, NordVPN’s bundle overview says its Complete plan includes NordPass and NordLocker with one terabyte of encrypted storage, while also describing country-specific tiers and features. NordVPN’s storage page says Complete and Ultra subscribers get one terabyte, while Nord Account users get three gigabytes. Check the live page and your account before relying on either benefit.
- Confirm the exact tier and country shown at checkout.
- Check whether the password manager and storage are included, or require separate accounts or subscriptions.
- Verify storage capacity and supported platforms in your account, not just in a general bundle description.
- Review renewal terms and current plan pricing directly with the provider; the sources cited here do not establish current prices.
Assess the password manager separately
A password manager should fit the credentials and devices you actually use. Check what it stores, how it protects the vault, whether it works across your browsers and devices, and what happens if you lose access.

What can it store and how does it work?
- Vault contents: Does it handle logins, passkeys, payment details, private notes and identity information you need?
- Encryption and keys: Does the provider explain whether data is encrypted on your device and who can access or recover the keys? Terms such as “zero knowledge” are provider descriptions; look for an explanation of what they mean in practice.
- Daily use: Can you import existing credentials, autofill safely, sync across your devices and browsers, and access what you need offline?
- Plan limits: Are features such as secure sharing, password-health checks, breach monitoring, multifactor authentication (MFA) or passkeys included in your exact tier?
NordPass says its vault stores passwords, passkeys, card details and private notes, and describes zero-knowledge architecture, XChaCha20 encryption, importing and autofill on its password-vault page. These are the provider’s descriptions, not independent test results.
Its plans page says Free includes unlimited password storage, sync, autosave, autofill and MFA; Premium adds sharing, device switching, Password Health and Data Breach Scanner. Feature eligibility can change, so verify the current plan details before choosing.

Check recovery, MFA and security evidence
Before moving your credentials into a vault, find the provider’s documentation for account recovery. Establish what you can do if you forget the master password or lose a trusted device, and whether recovery could affect access to encrypted data. Don’t assume the provider can restore a vault—or that it cannot—without checking its stated process.

NordPass also mentions FIDO2-certified security keys for phishing-resistant MFA in NordPass Business. This does not establish that a personal account supports a hardware key. Before buying one, verify compatibility with the specific service, tier, browser and device you use.
Compare alternatives on the same criteria
Proton Pass offers another example of how to examine a provider’s security claims. Its security page describes passkeys, secure sharing, Pass Monitor, OpenPGP-based sharing and key protection, email aliases, and encryption of vault fields and metadata. Treat these as Proton’s descriptions, and compare the features and plan terms that apply to your own account.

Assess encrypted file storage as a different tool
A password vault protects credentials and other small pieces of sensitive information. Cloud storage holds files and brings different questions: how files are encrypted, who controls their decryption keys, how access is restored, and how files can be shared.
Check encryption, access and recovery
- Encryption timing: Does the provider say files are encrypted end-to-end, including before they leave your device?
- Key control: Who controls the decryption keys, and what does the provider mean by “zero knowledge”?
- Recovery: What happens if you lose a device, account password or recovery key? Confirm the process before storing files you cannot replace.
- Sharing: Can you share by invitation or link, set viewer or editor permissions, and revoke access?
- Practical fit: Check capacity, file-size limits, sync behavior, device support and whether the service is included in your bundle.
NordLocker describes browser, Windows, Android and iOS access; encrypted sharing by protected link or invitation; end-to-end encryption; and zero-knowledge architecture. It also lists AES-256, XChaCha20-Poly1305 and Ed25519 among its algorithms. These are product claims on NordLocker’s features page, not independent conclusions about how the service performs in every use case.

NordVPN’s storage page describes one-terabyte inclusion for Complete and Ultra and three gigabytes for Nord Account users. It also reported that in-app cloud access was being tested and limited at the time the page was checked. Verify the current app path and platform availability in your account before planning a workflow around in-app access.
Use a like-for-like checklist before deciding
Compare the bundle with standalone password managers or storage services using the same questions. This prevents a broad “included” label from obscuring a missing feature or a limitation that matters to you.
- Exact regional plan, included tools and storage capacity.
- Supported devices, operating systems and browsers.
- Types of credentials and files supported.
- Encryption approach and who controls decryption keys.
- MFA and passkey support for your account class.
- Recovery options, sharing controls and ability to revoke access.
- Independent assessment scope and date, if one is cited.
- Current cost and renewal terms, checked on the provider’s live plan page.
A bundle is a good fit only if both tools meet your needs on their own. If the password manager lacks your required browser support or recovery options, or the storage service cannot meet your sharing or access requirements, the VPN bundle’s convenience does not solve that mismatch.
