Why Your Ethernet Switch Is Not Working: Common Causes and Fixes

A no-power, no-link, no-internet, or PoE problem can have different causes. Follow these checks to isolate the failing cable, endpoint, port, configuration, or switch.

When an Ethernet switch “isn’t working,” the cause may be power, a failed physical link, a network configuration or upstream connection, or PoE—not necessarily a broken switch. Start by identifying which symptom you have, then test one cable, port, endpoint, and connection at a time.

First identify what is failing

Check whether the switch powers on, whether the relevant port shows a link, whether connected devices receive network access, and—if applicable—whether a PoE device receives power. These indicators point to different parts of the connection and should not be treated as interchangeable.

  • No power indication: investigate the outlet, power supply, and model-specific LED behavior.
  • Power but no port link: check the cable, endpoint, port, and any managed-switch port setting.
  • Link but no network or internet: investigate the uplink, router, IP configuration, and managed-switch settings.
  • Data works but a PoE device does not power on: check PoE compatibility, port settings, cabling, and power budget.

If the switch has no lights or will not power on

Confirm that the power plug is firmly connected at both ends and that the outlet or power source works. If the switch uses an external adapter, check that it is the correct supply for that model and that its cable and connector are undamaged. Do not substitute an adapter based only on connector fit: use the voltage and other requirements specified for the switch.

Check the model’s manual before concluding that an unlit LED means failure. Some switches allow LEDs to be disabled, and power and port-link lights report different conditions. TP-Link’s DS1016G installation guide describes model-specific power and indicator checks; its instructions should not be assumed to apply to every switch.

If a device does not show an Ethernet link

Make sure the device at the other end is powered on and its Ethernet interface is active. Reseat both cable connectors, then substitute a cable and endpoint that you know work. Try another appropriate switch port. If only one cable, endpoint, or port has been tested, the result is not enough to identify a failed switch.

For the DS1016G, TP-Link specifies a cable length of less than 100 meters (328 feet); that is a limit for that model’s installation guide, not a universal guarantee that any cable within that distance will work. Check the exact switch documentation for its requirements.

Unmanaged switches generally do not provide per-port configuration, but a managed switch may have a port disabled or otherwise configured to prevent connection. Check the device’s port status and settings in its management interface. Port names and screens vary by product; TP-Link’s support guidance for checking switch port status is product-specific.

If the link light is on but there is no internet

A link light means the devices detect a physical connection; it does not prove that the cable is error-free, that the switch has a working uplink, or that the connected device can reach the internet. A marginal cable can still produce link activity while causing errors or link flaps, as Cisco explains in its Ethernet troubleshooting guidance.

  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
  1. Test the upstream path: connect a computer to the router or upstream connection using the same cable, if practical. Check whether it receives the expected IP configuration and can reach the network.
  2. Check the switch uplink: verify that the cable connects to the intended router or upstream port and that both ends show a link.
  3. Compare direct and switched connections: if the computer works when connected directly to the router but not through the switch, focus on the switch, its uplink, or its configuration.
  4. Inspect managed-switch settings: check port status and relevant VLAN or access-control-list (ACL) rules. A powered switch can still block or misdirect traffic through configuration.

For managed networks, Cisco Meraki’s basic switch troubleshooting guide and Microsoft’s TCP/IP connectivity troubleshooting guide cover relevant switch and IP-connectivity checks.

If a PoE device is not receiving power

PoE troubleshooting is separate from ordinary data-link troubleshooting: a working Ethernet link does not establish that the port is delivering power. Confirm that both the switch and powered device support compatible IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, or 802.3bt standards, as applicable. On a configurable switch, make sure PoE is enabled for the port.

Check the switch’s total PoE power budget against the connected devices’ requirements. Then try a known-good cable and, where the powered device supports it, an alternative supported power source. A shorter cable may help in some insufficient-power cases, but follow the documentation for the exact switch and device. See TP-Link Omada’s PoE troubleshooting guidance for its product context.

When to restart, update, or reset the switch

Power cycling may clear a temporary fault. For a managed switch, a firmware update may address a known issue, but use the model’s documented procedure. A factory reset is a more disruptive option: it can erase VLANs, port settings, and other configuration, leaving the switch needing to be set up again. Before resetting, save a configuration backup or record the settings you will need to restore. Reset and update steps differ by model.

When to suspect a failed switch

Consider vendor or warranty support if known-good cables and endpoints still fail across multiple appropriate ports, or if the switch shows no power indication despite a verified compatible supply and confirmation that its LEDs are enabled. Report what you tested, which ports were involved, and whether the failure affected one device or several. That information helps distinguish a hardware fault from a cable, endpoint, or configuration problem.
