If you only need more wired ports for computers, TVs, consoles or printers, an unmanaged Ethernet switch is usually the right fit. Choose a smart-managed or fully managed switch when you have a specific need for controls such as VLANs, traffic prioritization or monitoring—and confirm that your router and other network gear support the features you plan to use.
What’s the difference between unmanaged and managed switches?
Unmanaged switches
An unmanaged switch has no user configuration interface. Connect it to your router or another switch, then plug in wired devices; it forwards Ethernet traffic automatically. This is straightforward port expansion, not a new internet connection or a configurable security boundary. TP-Link describes unmanaged switches as suitable for small home networks where configuration is unnecessary, and Cisco characterizes plug-and-play models as appropriate for basic connectivity and home offices: TP-Link and Cisco.

Smart-managed and fully managed switches
“Managed” covers a range of products. Smart-managed or easy-smart models may offer a web interface and a limited set of controls, such as basic VLAN or QoS settings, link aggregation, IGMP snooping or port mirroring. More fully featured managed switches may add broader VLAN and security options, access control lists (ACLs), authentication, SNMP monitoring or command-line access. Features vary by manufacturer and model, so check the exact product specification rather than assuming the tier name guarantees a particular capability. See TP-Link’s managed-switch overview and Cisco’s switch overview.
Which switch should you choose?
Choose unmanaged for straightforward port expansion
If your goal is simply to connect more wired devices and you do not need to configure or monitor traffic, an unmanaged switch is typically the sensible home choice. Count the connections you need, including one port for the link back to your router, and choose a switch with enough ports.

Choose managed when you need a named control
A managed switch is worth considering when you can identify a feature you will use—for example, separating device groups with VLANs, prioritizing traffic with QoS, monitoring switch activity, or applying specific security controls. If you do not need those controls, the added configuration can be work without a clear benefit.
Smart-managed or fully managed?
Start with the exact feature you need, then check whether a smart-managed model provides it. If it does not, compare full managed models that explicitly list the required control. The labels alone are not a reliable feature checklist.

What to check before buying
- VLANs and isolation: Verify explicit VLAN support on the switch, and check that the router and any access points in the setup can carry and enforce the VLAN configuration. A managed switch by itself does not create end-to-end isolation. TP-Link outlines switch management features here.
- Monitoring and security: Identify the particular monitoring or security feature you expect to use, then confirm that the switch model includes it. Smart-managed products do not all offer the same controls.
- Power over Ethernet (PoE): PoE is separate from management. If the switch needs to power compatible cameras or access points, check the supported PoE standard and the switch’s total power budget against the devices’ requirements. See TP-Link’s PoE-switch overview.
- Router or mesh compatibility: Check the network-system maker’s setup guidance before enabling advanced switch features. For example, eero recommends disabling or removing features including STP/RSTP, IGMP, VLANs and QoS when using a managed switch with its system: eero’s guidance. Follow the advice for your own system rather than assuming every mesh network behaves the same way.
- Port count and speed: Make sure the switch has enough ports for your devices and the uplink, and check the speeds of the router, switch ports and connected devices. The connection cannot run faster than its slowest link.
- Physical fit: Compare noise and form factor for the location where the switch will live, especially if it will be near a desk or in a shared room.
How the choice changes by home setup
TVs, consoles, computers and printers
For everyday wired devices that just need network access, unmanaged port expansion is generally sufficient. You do not need managed controls simply because several devices share the switch.
Home lab, cameras or multiple access points
A smart-managed or fully managed switch can be useful if you plan to separate device groups, monitor traffic or use other specific controls. For cameras or access points that need power, also evaluate PoE independently. The benefits depend on support from the rest of the network and on configuring those features correctly.

Bottom line
For basic home networking, choose an unmanaged switch and keep setup simple. Pay for managed features only when you have a concrete need for them, and verify that the exact switch and the rest of your network can support the setup.
