You generally can’t push-start an automatic car because its transmission does not provide the same direct, driver-controlled connection between the turning wheels and the engine that lets some manual cars start when the clutch is released. In many conventional automatics, the engine must also run a hydraulic pump to create the pressure the transmission needs. The exact design varies, so follow the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle.
Why a manual car may start when pushed
In a manual car, a driver can select a gear and release the clutch while the wheels are turning. That can transfer motion from the wheels through the drivetrain to turn the engine. This is often called bump-starting or push-starting.

It is not a universal option even for manuals: Mazda warns that push-starting its covered manual vehicle may damage its emission-control system. Check the vehicle’s own instructions before attempting it.
Why common automatic transmissions work differently
A conventional hydraulic automatic typically uses a torque converter rather than a driver-operated friction clutch. Its hydraulic operating pressure is commonly supplied by a pump driven by the engine. When the engine is stopped, a common design may not have the pressure needed to operate the transmission and transfer wheel motion in a way that turns the engine.

“Automatic” includes different designs, such as torque-converter automatics, continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), and dual-clutch transmissions. They do not all work identically, so this is a general explanation—not a claim that every automatic has the same mechanical limitation.
What vehicle makers say
Manufacturer instructions are the practical authority for a particular car. Ford’s owner-manual content says not to attempt to push-start its covered automatic vehicle and warns that doing so may damage the transmission. Mazda states, “You cannot start a vehicle with an automatic transmission by pushing it.” Kia’s 2024 owner help says its covered automatic and dual-clutch vehicles cannot be push-started.

What to do if the battery is dead
If the no-start is caused by a discharged battery, use the vehicle-specific jump-start procedure rather than trying to roll-start the car. Depending on the manual, that may mean using jumper cables and an appropriate 12-volt supply, or a portable 12-volt jump starter that meets the vehicle and device specifications. A jump is not guaranteed to solve every no-start problem.

- Find the jump-start section in the owner’s manual and follow its exact connection order, terminal locations, and safety instructions.
- Use only a power source and equipment that the manual allows. Ford’s cited instruction specifies a 12-volt supply; that figure is not a universal procedure for every vehicle.
- If you cannot follow the instructions safely, or the car still will not start, contact roadside assistance or a qualified service provider.
Why towing it to start is not a safe workaround
Do not tow an automatic car to make its engine start unless its vehicle instructions specifically allow it. Mazda and Kia warn that a vehicle may surge forward when the engine starts during an attempted tow-start. These warnings concern trying to start the engine by towing; they are not general recovery or towing guidance for moving a disabled car.
