A July 22, 2024 report said lawyers for Rina Oh Amen were seeking data from her inaccessible X accounts and that X responded to subpoenas by directing them to ask Amen for the information. The dispute arose in Amen’s civil defamation case against Virginia Giuffre—not an Epstein criminal prosecution—and the reviewed sources do not establish whether X ultimately produced the data.
What information was the subpoena seeking?
The July 22, 2024 report described efforts by Amen’s lawyers to obtain information from her X accounts. According to the report, one account had been suspended and she was locked out of another, so she could not retrieve the information herself. X’s lawyers reportedly told counsel to ask Amen for the data.

The report said the lawyers had been exchanging discovery materials and that Giuffre’s counsel asked the judge to begin the process of compelling X to comply. That was a reported discovery dispute; it was not a court finding that X had violated an order or had to turn over the records.

The case, Amen v. Giuffre, No. 1:21-cv-08839, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Rina Oh Amen was the plaintiff and Virginia L. Giuffre the defendant. In a March 7, 2024 order, Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald described the pleading this way: “in this action, plaintiff alleges in an amended complaint that defendant defamed her in several posts on Twitter (now known as X).” That is a description of an allegation, not a finding that defamation occurred. X was drawn into the dispute because it held account information that Amen’s lawyers were reportedly trying to obtain. The reviewed material does not say that Elon Musk was a party to the case or was accused of involvement in Epstein’s crimes.
Did a court order X to comply?
The July 2024 report described counsel seeking to start a motion-to-compel process, but the materials reviewed do not show a court order requiring X to produce the account data. Amen’s lawyer, Alexander Dudelson, told the report: “If they complied, ultimately, I could set a trial date and get this matter resolved.” That was his comment to the news outlet, not a statement by the judge.

There is also no verified outcome here for the subpoena itself: the available material does not establish whether X later turned over the information.
What court records say about privacy and later proceedings
In its March 7, 2024 order, the court said a nonparty’s name appeared in pleadings and that the person’s counsel had asked for redaction. Judge Buchwald ordered the relevant filings permanently sealed and directed the parties to redact the nonparty’s name in future public filings. The order demonstrates that protecting a person’s identity was an explicit concern in this litigation; it does not establish what X did in response to the subpoenas.

A June 10, 2025 order denied a summary-judgment motion without prejudice, granted a motion to seal, and directed defense counsel to submit a status report every 60 days concerning Giuffre’s estate after her death. Those are procedural developments, not a ruling on the X subpoena. The latest located docket listing was retrieved on June 10, 2025, so it should not be treated as a current account of the case in 2026 or as proof of the subpoena’s eventual outcome.
The Department of Justice’s Epstein Disclosures page says victim names and identifying information have been redacted, while warning that sensitive information may inadvertently remain online given the volume of material. That is a broader privacy warning; it does not explain or establish X’s actions in this separate civil discovery dispute.
