The allegation became public in February 2024, when he shared screenshots of a private exchange with Elon Musk. The available reporting does not independently establish the restriction’s scope, duration or motive, so the screenshots should not be treated as proof of exactly how his account was handled.
What Matt Taibbi alleged
Taibbi said that he had been under a “blanket search ban” and that many of his followers were not seeing his posts. That is his description of the experience, not an independently measured finding about account visibility. Contemporaneous reporting quoted Taibbi’s statement: “I was under a ‘blanket search ban’ at one point and a lot of my 1.9 million followers still don’t see my content.” The follower figure is part of his quoted statement, not a current or independently verified count.

When the reported exchange happened
Reporting places the private message exchange in April 2023, amid a dispute involving Substack and the launch of Substack Notes, a feature seen as competing with X. Taibbi asked Musk whether he was being shadowbanned. The screenshots were made public in February 2024. Coverage of the exchange describes that context and timeline.

How Twitter and X describe visibility restrictions
Twitter’s 2018 statement
In 2018, Twitter said, “And we certainly don’t shadow ban based on political viewpoints or ideology.” That statement expressed the company’s position on moderation at the time. It predates the reported Taibbi exchange by several years and does not establish how his account was treated in 2023.
X’s current terminology
X’s help page addresses “Does X shadow ban?” and points to the platform’s explanation of visibility filtering and platform manipulation. X’s help page reflects the company’s terminology and position; it does not resolve Taibbi’s account-specific allegation.

What is and is not established
The account is best understood by separating Taibbi’s claim, the reported message context and the platform’s general public statements. The reporting reviewed does not provide internal moderation records or independent analytics establishing whether his account was subject to a search restriction. It also does not establish how long a restriction lasted, how many posts or users it affected, or whether it was connected to Taibbi’s Substack activity.
