Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were not without a safe place to stay or a planned way home, but they did lose their intended ride back and spent far longer in space than expected. NASA decided Starliner should return without them and brought them back later on SpaceX Crew-9. They landed on March 18, 2025, after 286 days in space, according to the Associated Press.
Were the Starliner astronauts actually stranded?
It depends on what “stranded” means. If it means isolated without support or any planned way home, no: NASA said the astronauts were safe aboard the International Space Station (ISS), incorporated them into the station’s Expedition 71/72 crew, and arranged for them to return on Crew-9. If it means their planned mission and ride home were disrupted for months, the word captures what happened to them.

NASA’s August 24, 2024, statement explained the distinction. The agency said Starliner would return empty while Wilmore and Williams remained aboard the ISS and later came home on Crew-9. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the choice reflected the agency’s commitment to safety. The decision avoided making an uncertain spacecraft carry a crew; it did not make the astronauts’ unexpected extended stay any less real.
How did a short test flight turn into a long stay?
NASA’s February 19, 2026, account says the Starliner test flight was originally planned to last 8 to 14 days. Instead, the spacecraft spent 93 days in space before returning without its crew. Wilmore and Williams remained on the station until March 18, 2025.

The Associated Press also reported that the astronauts completed 4,576 Earth orbits and traveled 121 million miles (195 million kilometers) before splashdown. Those totals describe their full time in space, not just the Starliner flight.
Why didn’t NASA bring them home on Starliner?
During Starliner’s approach to the station on June 6, 2024, NASA and Boeing identified helium leaks and problems with the spacecraft’s reaction-control thrusters. NASA later said the resulting uncertainty, along with a lack of expert concurrence, did not meet the agency’s safety and performance requirements for a crewed return.

NASA Commercial Crew Program manager Steve Stich said on August 24, 2024, that Starliner was capable, but a crewed return required a higher level of certainty. NASA therefore chose an uncrewed return rather than treating the problems as acceptable risks for the astronauts’ trip home. Starliner undocked and landed autonomously at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico at 10:01 p.m. MDT on September 6, 2024.
How did Wilmore and Williams get back to Earth?
NASA assigned them to return with SpaceX Crew-9 after they remained aboard the ISS. They splashed down in a SpaceX capsule on March 18, 2025, ending their 286-day stay in space. Their return was a planned alternative to Starliner, not a last-minute rescue from an unsupported station.

What did NASA’s 2026 investigation conclude?
On February 19, 2026, NASA released its investigation findings and formally classified the flight as a Type A mishap. NASA attributed the risk conditions to an interplay of hardware failures, qualification gaps, leadership missteps, and cultural breakdowns. It said technical root-cause work and corrective actions were continuing.
That finding broadens the explanation beyond the immediate helium leaks and thruster problems observed during the flight. It also shifts the question from whether NASA had a ride home arranged to how the spacecraft and the organization allowed the return risk to develop. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency needed to be transparent about shortcomings, own its mistakes, and ensure they were not repeated.
