Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Wordle can reject a word that is real English because being in a dictionary does not guarantee that it is in the game’s accepted-guess list. First check that your entry has exactly five letters and was submitted correctly. If those checks pass, the word may simply not be accepted by that version of the game; refreshing can help if the page is out of date, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Why does Wordle say a word is not valid?
Wordle checks guesses against a game-specific list, not every word a general dictionary recognizes. An unaffiliated Wordle guide describes this accepted-list explanation, but it is not an official statement of NYT’s current implementation: NytWordle.com’s Wordle guide.

That distinction means a rejected guess is not necessarily misspelled or meaningless. The sources available do not establish the current complete NYT accepted-guess list or every rule for which words it includes, so there is no reliable way here to confirm every disputed word individually.

What to check before trying again
- Count the letters. Make sure the entry contains exactly five letters. Discord Support states that each guess must be a valid five-letter word for its licensed Wordle Activity; controls and details can vary on other platforms: Discord’s Wordle Activity FAQ.
- Check what you typed. Look for a missing letter, an accidental extra character, or a typo.
- Submit the entry. Use the platform’s Enter key or on-screen submit control. The general Wordle entry flow described by NytWordle.com uses Enter or the virtual keyboard, but the exact control can depend on where you are playing.
- If it is a real word, consider the accepted list. A word can be recognizable and still fall outside the game’s accepted guesses.
When should you refresh the game?
Try refreshing if the game may be showing an out-of-date version, particularly if the rejection began around a list update. ABC News reported on February 17, 2022, that NYT had changed the list of accepted five-letter solutions and relayed the NYT FAQ’s advice: “To ensure your game is in sync with the updated version, you can refresh the website where you play Wordle.” This is historical sync guidance, not proof that refreshing fixes every rejected guess: ABC News’ report on the 2022 list change.

Are you playing NYT Wordle or another version?
Different operators may use different word lists, so a guess accepted in one Wordle-style game may not be accepted in another. Discord says its licensed Wordle Activity has the same daily puzzle as NYT Games, but that does not establish that unofficial clones share either game’s implementation or accepted list. If the problem persists on a clone, consult that site’s own help or support rather than assuming NYT’s rules apply.
Also, do not apply rules from another NYT word game to Wordle. The NYT Help Center documents that Crossplay uses NWL 2023 and excludes trademarks and proper nouns; that is a Crossplay policy, not evidence of Wordle’s dictionary or exclusions: NYT Help Center: Crossplay.

If the guess is still rejected
- Recheck the five-letter length, spelling, and submit action.
- Refresh the page if a stale version is plausible, then try the entry again.
- Confirm which game or platform you are using and contact its support if the issue continues.
- Do not treat rejection alone as proof that a word is not English; the currently documented sources do not provide an exhaustive, current NYT Wordle guess list for checking individual terms.
