A rootkit infection does not automatically mean you need a new computer. For a Windows PC, first use a trusted offline scan; if the infection cannot be removed, Microsoft recommends reinstalling Windows and security software from trusted installation media, then restoring only from a known-good backup. Consider replacing the computer if qualified help finds firmware or hardware compromise that cannot be reliably repaired, recovery fails, or the machine cannot run a supported operating system securely.
Why a rootkit changes the decision
A rootkit can hide itself or other malicious activity by intercepting and changing normal operating-system processes. Microsoft warns that after infection, “you can’t trust any information that device reports about itself.” A normal-looking desktop or reassuring scan from the potentially compromised installation is not, by itself, proof the machine is clean. Rootkits can operate at different layers: a driver or kernel, the bootloader, or firmware. A Windows reinstall replaces the selected Windows installation; it does not, on its own, establish that firmware below the operating system is clean. Microsoft describes these layers and notes that Secure Boot checks bootloader signatures on supported UEFI systems, while Trusted Boot helps protect startup. What to do before deciding to replace it
- Stop relying on the suspected Windows installation for a clean bill of health. Avoid using it for sensitive accounts or treating its scans and status reports as conclusive. - Use trusted recovery media if the infection persists. Microsoft’s Windows recovery guidance calls for installation media and a clean installation when malware infection is suspected. The process removes Windows, personal files, apps, and settings from the selected drive. Create the media on a separate working computer and use a USB flash drive for Windows installation media that you trust. Follow the instructions for your Windows version and carefully identify the drive before proceeding. Microsoft’s clean-install instructions.
- Restore cautiously. Restore from a backup believed to predate the infection. The UK National Cyber Security Centre warns that trying to rescue files while a device is still infected can carry malware into the reinstalled system; follow its malware recovery guidance. If you cannot identify a known-good backup or are unsure which files are safe, ask a qualified technician before restoring them.
- Get expert help if compromise remains or firmware is suspected. Persistent detections or credible evidence of a firmware-level problem require an assessment beyond an ordinary Windows reinstall. The NCSC advises seeking expert help when its recovery steps do not fix an infection. A specialist can assess whether firmware repair, component service, or replacement is appropriate for the specific device. NCSC guidance.
When keeping the computer is reasonable
Keeping it is a reasonable option when a trusted offline scan or clean installation restores a stable system, there is no evidence of firmware or hardware compromise, and the computer can run an operating system that still receives security updates. Use security software and keep the operating system updated after recovery. Do not treat the fact that a reinstall completed as proof of firmware integrity if the original evidence pointed below Windows.

When replacement makes sense
- A qualified assessment finds a deeper compromise that cannot be confidently repaired. This may involve firmware or hardware, rather than just Windows. A rootkit label alone does not show that this is the case.
- The infection or suspicious behavior persists after trusted recovery. Have the device assessed rather than repeating reinstallations or trusting reports from the suspected system.
- The computer cannot run a supported operating system. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the computer cannot run a currently supported Windows version or another suitably supported operating system, replacing it may be the safer long-term choice even if the original infection was removed. Check Microsoft’s current Windows recovery information for applicable version guidance.
There is no universal replacement threshold in the cited Microsoft or NCSC guidance. The decision depends on where the compromise resides, whether trusted recovery succeeds, whether backups can be restored safely, and whether the device remains supportable.
