Choose a gaming controller by checking the exact platform and games you plan to play first; then compare connection options, controls, comfort, and any extra features you will actually use. A controller that connects to a PC is not automatically supported by every game, and PC compatibility does not establish compatibility with a PlayStation or Xbox console.
Start with the platform and games
List the system or systems you want to use: Windows PC, a particular PlayStation or Xbox console, or a combination. Then verify the exact controller model against each system and check support for the games you play. Compatibility can vary by title, even when the controller connects successfully.

For Steam games, look at the game’s store page under Controller Support. Valve distinguishes “Full Controller Support” from “Partial Controller Support.” Steam Input supports several controller families and DirectInput gamepads, but that input-layer support does not mean every game supports every controller or feature. See Valve’s Steam Input supported-device information.
Sony likewise cautions that DualSense support varies by game and directs players to the game’s Steam Controller Support label. PlayStation’s PC support guidance is useful for checking the limits of that specific controller, not as a guarantee for every title.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Choose wired or wireless based on your setup
Check the connection modes for the exact model and the host device. USB is a straightforward option if you prefer a cable or need a feature that depends on a wired connection. Bluetooth can provide cable-free use when the controller, computer or console, operating system, and game all support the intended setup. Connection by itself does not guarantee that a game recognizes every control.
Sony documents USB and Bluetooth connections for DualSense on supported PC systems. Its US product page lists both connection options for the DualSense PC bundle, which includes a USB Type-C to Type-C cable. Check the regional listing and bundle contents before assuming a cable is included or suitable for your setup: Sony’s US DualSense PC bundle listing.
Compare controls and comfort in your hands
There is no universally best stick layout or grip. If possible, try a controller before buying, or compare its shape and control placement with one you already find comfortable. Consider:
Rank #2
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Whether the stick positions feel natural to you.
- Hand size, grip, and how easily you can reach face buttons, triggers, and bumpers.
- Trigger feel, controller weight, and whether you can hold it comfortably for a full session.
- Whether extra paddles or remappable controls matter for your games and play style.
These are personal-fit questions rather than established performance rankings. No comparative measurements or hands-on tests establish that one layout is more comfortable or better for a particular genre.
Check special features and software requirements
Premium features are useful only when your games and connection can use them. For DualSense, Sony says adaptive triggers require supported games; haptics on PC may require USB; and the headset jack requires a wired connection on PC and Mac. Check the feature notes for your specific game and setup before paying extra for those capabilities. Sony’s DualSense PC and Mac feature guidance describes these conditions.
Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app for Windows can update firmware for DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers and customize DualSense Edge. Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 as requirements and says the controller must connect by USB or Bluetooth. Details are on the PlayStation Accessories app page.

Verify multi-platform compatibility model by model
Do not treat a “PC compatible” label as proof that a controller also works on a PlayStation or Xbox console. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility statement for every target system, including any model-specific mode, licensed connection, or adapter requirement. Steam Input’s supported-device information describes PC input support; it is not a universal console-compatibility list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you want one controller for multiple platforms, make a short checklist before buying:
- Exact controller model and hardware revision.
- Each console or computer you intend to use.
- Connection method supported on each system.
- Support for the games and features you care about.
How the DualSense PC option fits
Sony’s US listing for its DualSense PC bundle names PS5, PC, Mac, and mobile devices as compatible platforms and offers USB and Bluetooth connection options. It also advertises play over “10,000+ Steam games”; that is Sony’s product-page claim, not a promise of identical controller support or feature availability in every listed game. Sony directs buyers to Steam or the publisher to check individual game support. Verify the current regional product listing and the exact features your games support.

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
The Xbox Wireless Controller is another potential PC option, but confirm the precise model and its current first-party compatibility details for the computer and console you plan to use. A controller family appearing in Steam Input’s supported-device list does not answer every model-specific or console-compatibility question.
Make the final choice
- Name your target systems. Include every PC or console you expect to use.
- Check your games. For Steam titles, inspect the Controller Support label; for other platforms, check the game’s or publisher’s support information.
- Confirm the exact controller model. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility page for each target system rather than relying on a general “PC compatible” label.
- Pick a connection. Decide whether USB, Bluetooth, or both fit your setup, and check if a desired feature requires a particular connection.
- Assess fit and controls. Compare stick layout, reach, grip, triggers, weight, and any remapping or paddles you need.
- Compare current prices and bundle contents. Check the current listing in your region, including whether it contains a suitable cable, before deciding value.
For accessibility needs, choose around the controls and input methods the player can use. Standard remapping may not meet every access requirement; confirm the specific controller’s capabilities rather than assuming customization alone is sufficient.
