Core clock, memory clock, voltage, and power limit control different parts of a graphics card’s operating behavior. Core and memory clocks set frequency targets; voltage affects the operating point available to the GPU; and the power limit can constrain how long the card sustains boost behavior. Their labels, ranges, and effects vary by GPU, generation, driver, and tuning software, so there is no universal safe offset, voltage, or guaranteed performance gain.
What the four GPU overclocking settings mean
Core or graphics clock
The core clock is the operating frequency of the graphics processor. Depending on the card and utility, it may be labelled GPU, graphics, engine, or core clock. Modern GPUs often adjust their clocks dynamically, so a configured offset or target is not necessarily the frequency the card will sustain under every workload. NVIDIA documents graphics-clock settings in its System Management Interface documentation, and AMD describes GPU clock controls in its Adrenalin tuning documentation.
Memory clock
Memory clock refers to the frequency of the graphics card’s video memory, or VRAM. It is separate from the GPU core clock and may matter more in workloads sensitive to memory throughput. NVIDIA treats graphics and memory clocks as distinct controls, while AMD exposes a VRAM overclock control. Display conventions and effective-rate calculations can differ, so slider values should not be compared across products without checking the manufacturer’s definitions. A higher memory setting does not guarantee a measurable gain in every game or application.
Voltage
Voltage is part of the electrical operating point associated with a frequency. Depending on the card and tuning utility, users may be able to adjust voltage directly or modify a voltage-frequency curve; the available controls vary. AMD’s Adrenalin documentation includes GPU voltage adjustment. There is no generally safe voltage target established across GPUs, so do not treat a value found for another card as a recommendation for yours.

Power limit
The power limit is a product-defined ceiling or target for board or GPU power, often shown as a percentage relative to a baseline. If the GPU reaches that limit, it may reduce clock behavior to stay within it. Raising the limit can permit higher power use, but does not ensure higher performance; the supported range depends on the card. AMD’s Radeon WattMan FAQ says: “Power Limit can be increased or reduced as a percentage and should be set to the maximum when increasing GPU or Memory clock frequency.” This is AMD guidance for the WattMan workflow it describes, not a universal rule for every GPU or tuning goal.
How clock, voltage, power, and temperature interact
These settings work within connected operating constraints. A higher clock target can increase power demand; voltage changes can affect power use and stability; and a power ceiling can limit sustained boost. Temperature can also affect GPU operation. The practical result depends on the specific card and workload rather than on one slider in isolation.

That is why an offset or target should not be read as a promised sustained clock, and why a setting that appears stable in one game may not establish stability in another. The available manufacturer documentation explains controls, but does not provide a cross-vendor tuning recipe or a guaranteed FPS increase.
Should you increase the GPU power limit?
It depends on the card, the utility, and the goal. AMD’s WattMan FAQ recommends setting the limit to maximum when increasing GPU or memory frequency in that workflow. A higher limit can give a GPU more room before power becomes a constraint, but it also permits greater power draw and does not guarantee a performance improvement. Use only the range supported for your model and follow its vendor’s guidance; do not assume AMD’s recommendation applies to all cards.

What performance gain should you expect?
No general consumer statistic for typical GPU overclocking gains is established in the cited sources. Results depend on the GPU, workload, cooling and power constraints, and stability at the chosen settings. A published 2014 research paper reported up to 37–48% improvement in performance per watt on an NVIDIA K20 running the xGPU workload under particular conditions involving reduced supply voltage, increased frequency, and low die temperature. That result is a bounded experimental finding, not an expected gaming-overclock gain for a modern consumer GPU. See the paper, Optimizing performance per watt on GPUs in High Performance Computing: temperature, frequency and voltage effects.
What to do if a game becomes unstable
Instability can have more than one cause. NVIDIA says its Debug Mode can help determine whether crashes arise from running a graphics card above reference clock speeds; NVIDIA also notes that CPU and system-memory overclocking can contribute to game instability. If problems begin after GPU tuning, return the GPU settings to stock and follow support guidance for your specific card. Evaluate stability and performance on your own system and workload rather than assuming GPU tuning is the only possible cause. NVIDIA’s instructions are available in Enabling NVIDIA Debug Mode to disable GPU overclocking.

Where to find the controls
The labels and available controls depend on the vendor’s software and the GPU model. AMD documents tuning in Customize GPU Performance Tuning with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and provides an overview of tuning and metrics on its Adrenalin performance page. NVIDIA documents clock settings and power limits in its nvidia-smi reference. These documents describe controls; they do not make settings interchangeable between different cards or utilities.
