First identify exactly when it fails. Preserve the delivered files unchanged, record the complete error message, and ask the venue for its server or ingest logs. A desktop DCP player can help inspect a package, but only the target cinema server and its logs can establish whether that venue can ingest and play it.
First, find where the failure happens
Ask: Does it fail before the copy finishes, when the server looks for the package, during ingest, or when playback is started? Write down the stage, the full error text, the server model and software version if the venue can provide them, and the selected composition or CPL if playback was attempted. “DCP won’t ingest” and “Invalid CPL” are useful descriptions to report, but they do not identify a cause by themselves.

- During transfer: Keep the source intact and ask the venue to confirm that the copy completed and that its integrity check passed.
- At discovery: Ask which drive, filesystem, and package location the server expects, and whether its discovery or ingest logs show the package.
- During ingest: Request the exact rejection message and relevant log entries; then have the package checked for missing, unreadable, or inconsistent assets.
- At scheduled playback: Confirm which CPL was selected, whether playback was authorized if encrypted, and what the server and media-block logs report.
Do not rename, edit, or selectively remove files as an initial fix. Changing a package can make it harder to compare the delivered copy with the venue’s copy or to isolate the original fault.

What is inside a DCP—and why completeness matters
A DCP is a structured collection of files and references, not a single movie file. SMPTE describes it as “a collection of files containing D-Cinema essence and related metadata to be ingested and reproduced by a D-Cinema playback system” in ST 429-2, section 1. The package includes a Packing List (PKL) and the assets it references; a Composition Playlist (CPL) identifies the track files for a particular composition. A missing asset, mismatched identifier, malformed playlist, or incomplete copy can therefore interfere with discovery, ingest, or playback. See SMPTE ST 429-2, sections 5.2–5.3.

Match the symptom to the next check

These are diagnostic possibilities, not conclusions that can be drawn from a short error label alone. The venue’s logs and an actual inspection of the package are needed to narrow down the cause. DCI’s Compliance Test Plan includes examples such as incorrect audio TrackFile IDs and frame-order or integrity errors; those examples show possible conformance failures, not that any one symptom always has the same cause.
Check the copy and package structure without altering the original
Confirm the complete transfer
Keep the original delivered package as received. Ask the venue to confirm that the whole transfer finished, that all referenced assets are present, and whether its hash or integrity process found a mismatch. If the source and destination differ, compare them and investigate the transfer rather than renaming or editing files to make the error disappear.

Use validation to investigate readability and structure
A DCP inspection tool or the mastering facility can check whether package files and references are readable and internally consistent. Dolby CineAsset’s manual describes CineInspect checks for ASSETMAP and VOLINDEX naming, signatures, the SMPTE CPL key ID, JPEG 2000 frame readability, MXF universal labels, and UUID validity. It also distinguishes standard validation from stricter DCI validation: in that tool’s DCI validation mode, an Interop package is an error, while standard validation accepts Interop or SMPTE. That is the behavior documented for this vendor tool, not proof that every cinema server rejects Interop. See Dolby CineAsset manual, pages 34–35.

Check the venue’s server and delivery requirements
A validation report answers questions about the package; it does not prove that a particular venue’s server supports that package form or delivery method. Ask the receiving venue what package forms, drive types, filesystems, and delivery locations its ingest workflow accepts. The DCP Cloud FAQ advises agreeing on delivery with the theater because playback servers can have specific drive and format requirements. Treat that as provider guidance, not a guarantee about every venue.

An external drive is only a way to deliver the package, not a remedy for a malformed DCP, a missing asset, or an invalid KDM. Before buying or reformatting one, get the receiving venue’s supported drive and filesystem specifications. If the package validates but the server still rejects it, ask the venue to check its capability and ingest logs rather than treating successful playback in a consumer or desktop player as proof of cinema-server compatibility.
If the DCP is encrypted, verify the KDM and playback window
Encrypted content requires authorization for the intended composition and target playback system. Ask the venue or distributor to check that the KDM matches the CPL and the target device or certificate, that its authorized time window is active, and that the server’s trusted clock is correct. If those details do not match, the distributor or content owner can verify the recipient and issue a corrected KDM. Do not try to bypass encryption. DCI’s Digital Cinema System Specification, version 1.4.5, requires a valid KDM and CPL and secure time for encrypted playout.

When picture, sound, or subtitles are wrong
Start with the composition actually selected for playback, then check that its CPL references the intended tracks. If the package inspection does not explain the fault, ask the venue to examine the relevant server and media-block errors and the signal path to the screen and auditorium audio system. A correct package does not by itself establish that the venue has selected the intended composition or routed its outputs as expected; the playback logs and venue setup help distinguish those possibilities.
