If a lithium-ion battery is swollen or otherwise damaged, keep it out of household trash and curbside recycling. If you think a fire is imminent, call 911. Otherwise, keep the battery or device away from flammable materials and contact its manufacturer and your local household hazardous-waste program for instructions before moving or handing it over.
First, check for signs of damage
A swollen battery is damaged and can pose a fire hazard. Other warning signs include a discolored casing, an unusual smell or corrosion, loose or damaged wires, or a history of misuse. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) lists these as possible indicators of a damaged or defective battery in its lithium battery safety advisory.

If you are unsure whether a battery is damaged, do not treat it as an ordinary end-of-life battery. Tell the manufacturer or local waste program what you have observed and ask for handling instructions.

If a fire may be imminent
Do not delay to look for a recycling location. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says: “If you think you have an imminent risk of fire, you may need to call 911.” Follow emergency responders’ directions.

If there is no apparent immediate fire threat
- Do not put the battery or device in household garbage or curbside recycling. EPA says lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them should not go in either. Municipal recycling facilities are generally designed for materials such as paper, plastic, metal and glass; a battery that gets into the sorting process may be crushed or damaged and create a fire hazard. A recycling symbol does not mean a battery belongs in the curbside bin. See EPA’s guidance on used household batteries.
- Keep it in a safe place while you seek instructions. Leave the battery or device away from flammable materials. EPA gives a bucket with a fire suppressant such as sand or kitty litter as an example of an interim storage location in its battery guidance. This is an example, not a certified container specification or permission to transport the battery.
- Contact the battery or device manufacturer, retailer, and local waste program. Describe the damage and ask where and how they want it handled. Contact your local household hazardous-waste program or state waste agency as well; EPA recommends contacting a manufacturer or local program for direction on damaged batteries. Its consumer guidance and lithium-ion battery information explain the need for appropriate handling.
- Confirm acceptance before traveling. Ask whether the specific location accepts damaged or swollen batteries and what handoff procedure it requires. State and local requirements may be stricter than federal rules, and a site that accepts ordinary batteries may not accept damaged ones.
Do not assume a collection box or shipping service will take it
Standard battery collection boxes and consumer shipping options are not automatically suitable for damaged batteries. PHMSA treats lithium batteries as hazardous materials during commercial transport. Its May 2022 advisory explains that damaged, defective or recalled batteries have a greater potential to short circuit, release heat or cause a fire, and that transport is subject to specialized packaging and restrictions. The advisory says such batteries may be transported by highway, rail or vessel, but not by commercial aircraft. These are transport rules, not do-it-yourself packing or shipping instructions; ask the receiving program or manufacturer for the actual handoff arrangements. Consult PHMSA’s advisory for its transport guidance.
Do not improvise by opening the device, puncturing or discharging the battery, or following ordinary-battery instructions to tape terminals, bag it, or ship it. EPA’s specific direction for damaged batteries is to contact the manufacturer, while transport requirements for damaged batteries are specialized.

If the battery is inside a device or a larger system
Phone, laptop, power tool or other consumer device
Do not pry open a device to remove a swollen or damaged battery. Batteries may not be removable or user-serviceable. Contact the device manufacturer or retailer and explain that the battery is damaged; ask for the recommended service and disposal route. EPA’s household battery guidance directs consumers to the manufacturer for help with damaged batteries.

E-bike or medium- or large-scale battery system
Contact the manufacturer, dealer or installer and the local hazardous-waste program before handling or moving the battery. EPA’s lithium-ion battery information recommends manufacturer, dealer or installer contact for medium- and large-scale systems. Ask the program to confirm whether it accepts that battery type and condition.

Where can you take a swollen battery?
There is no single drop-off destination that can be recommended for every U.S. household: acceptance depends on the location and the battery’s condition. Start with the device or battery manufacturer and your local household hazardous-waste program or state waste agency. Give them your location, battery type and a clear description of the damage, then confirm the exact site and handoff procedure before you go. EPA notes that state and local battery-waste requirements can be more stringent than federal requirements in its lithium-ion battery guidance.

Keeping a damaged battery out of household bins is both a safety measure and a way to ensure it reaches an appropriate handling channel. EPA describes specialized battery collection, sorting, evaluation and processing in its overview of used lithium-ion batteries. But a battery’s recycling symbol does not establish that a municipal curbside program or a particular drop-off site accepts it in damaged condition. Get explicit instructions for the battery you have.
