But no single lifespan is guaranteed, and there is no reliable universal replacement price: manufacturers typically do not publish retail battery prices. U.S. Department of Energy estimates put modeled battery component costs between $9,185 and $15,368 for several vehicle classes, but those are not installed repair quotes.
How long does an EV battery last?
There is no fixed number of years or miles that applies to every EV battery. NHTSA says a battery pack could last the lifespan of the vehicle, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says packs are generally designed for the vehicle’s expected lifetime and will eventually wear out. That is an expectation, not a guarantee that every pack will last equally long or retain its original capacity throughout ownership.

An older NREL predictive-modeling report estimated that plug-in vehicle batteries were likely to retain more than 70% of their original performance through the first eight years. It also projected that replacement within an anticipated 15-year vehicle lifetime would not be economically justified in most cases. Those are dated model results, not a current guarantee or a measured lifespan for every vehicle.
How often do EV batteries fail and need replacement?
A DOE summary published April 22, 2024, reported results from a Recurrent study of about 15,000 plug-in vehicles from model years 2011 through 2023. Battery replacement due to failure, excluding recalls, occurred in 1.5% of that sample. For model years 2016–2023, failure-related replacements were well under 1%; most would have been covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
#1 Best Overall
- Model: CR17450
- Voltage: 3.0V; Capacity: 2400mAh
- Type: Non-Rechargeable Lithium Battery
- Application: Used in water meter, meter, gas meter, PLC memory back-up power, public security alarm, instrumentation, automotive electronics equipment, emergency location, special testing electronic equipment and other fields
- Package List: 2 x CR17450 lithium battery
These figures measure failure-related replacement, not gradual loss of capacity, and do not cover every reason a pack might be changed. The DOE summary notes that battery technologies, thermal management, and chemistries have improved, while more years of data are needed to assess newer packs.
What EV battery warranty should you expect?
In the United States, many manufacturers offer EV battery warranties of eight years or 100,000 miles, and longer terms may apply in some states, according to the DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC). This is a general baseline, not a promise that every manufacturer uses the same terms or replaces a battery whenever range declines.

How much does EV battery replacement cost?
There is no defensible universal installed price. The DOE AFDC says manufacturers typically do not publish replacement-battery pricing and describes an out-of-warranty replacement as a significant expense. A real quote depends on the vehicle and the repair; ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider for a written, vehicle-specific estimate.
For context, DOE’s January 2025 clean-vehicle cost analysis lists the following modeled battery component costs for battery-electric vehicles. Amounts are in 2024 dollars:
Rank #3
- 12V 12AH BATTERY REPLACEMENT FOR EV RIDER S34-FD TRANSPORT - 2 PACK
| Vehicle class | Modeled battery component cost |
|---|---|
| Compact car | $9,185 |
| Midsize car | $9,929 |
| Midsize SUV | $11,032 |
| Pickup truck | $15,368 |
These are modeled component costs in a vehicle purchase-cost analysis—not retail replacement-pack prices or installed repair estimates. They do not establish the cost of labor, diagnosis, taxes, shipping, programming, or the complete repair. The report is available from DOE as 2025 Estimates of the Costs to Own and Operate Light-Duty Vehicles.
A separate DOE benchmark estimated a 2023 light-duty EV battery pack cost of $139 per usable kilowatt-hour for production at a scale of at least 100,000 units per year. DOE said that estimate was 90% below its 2008 estimate in constant 2023 dollars. This is a production-scale estimate, not a consumer repair price; multiplying it by a vehicle’s battery capacity will not produce a reliable replacement invoice. See DOE’s 2023 battery pack cost estimate.

Battery chemistry, pack design, thermal management, vehicle model, warranty terms, and the vehicle’s use history can all matter. DOE notes that active liquid cooling and other thermal-management strategies, as well as newer chemistries, have improved battery technology. The cited sources do not establish a way to calculate an individual battery’s lifespan from a driver’s charging habits or climate alone.

If a vehicle needs attention, compare repair estimates on the details that affect both cost and value:
- Warranty eligibility and the capacity threshold, if the warranty specifies one.
- Whether the proposed pack is new, remanufactured, or used, if those options are offered.
- Whether the written estimate includes parts, labor, diagnosis, and programming.
- The warranty on the replacement pack and on the repair labor.
- The vehicle’s expected remaining value and the usable range after repair.
Those comparisons help assess a specific repair, but the available DOE figures do not establish prices or availability for any particular option.
