Keeping Windows supported and up to date is one important layer of security.
What Windows security updates do
Security updates fix vulnerabilities in Windows that could otherwise be exploited. When a Windows release reaches the end of support, Microsoft stops providing its regular security fixes for that release. The computer may still start and run, but the operating system is no longer receiving those repairs.

That makes support status as important as the Windows name shown on the PC. A device running Windows 11 is not necessarily on a version that is still serviced: support dates depend on the specific version and edition. Microsoft explains the differences in its Windows lifecycle FAQ.
How to check for and install Windows 11 updates
Windows 11 downloads and installs updates automatically by default, according to Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ. You can also check manually:

- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any updates Windows offers, then restart if prompted to finish installation.
An update may not appear for every device at the same time. Microsoft says offers can vary while it checks compatibility, so a missing offer does not by itself mean your PC is broken.
Know the update schedule—and your version’s support status
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 guidance describes an annual feature-update cadence and regular monthly cumulative security updates, generally released on the second Tuesday of each month. Feature updates move Windows to a newer version; cumulative security updates deliver fixes on the supported version.

Check both the Windows edition and version, then confirm that version is within its servicing lifecycle using Microsoft’s lifecycle FAQ. A general statement such as “I have Windows 11” is not enough to establish that a particular installation is still receiving updates.

If your PC is still running Windows 10
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says the PC will continue to function, but it will no longer receive regular security updates and fixes. Its Windows 10 end-of-support guidance sets out these next steps:

- Upgrade to a supported Windows release if your device is eligible.
- Check whether consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) apply. Microsoft’s guidance describes consumer ESU security updates through October 13, 2026. Eligibility and enrollment options vary by region, so check the instructions for your device and location rather than assuming the same terms apply everywhere. ESU is time-limited, not a long-term replacement for supported Windows.
- Replace the PC if it cannot run a supported release. Consider whether the device meets requirements and whether upgrading or replacing it is practical before choosing this route; a supported PC does not need replacement simply to install updates.
Can antivirus software alone keep you protected?
No. Microsoft says antivirus software, including Microsoft Defender or third-party tools, can help but is not enough on its own. Antivirus is a complementary layer; it does not install missing Windows security fixes or restore support to an expired version. Keep the operating system supported and updated as well.

What to do when updates fail—or stop arriving
- If Windows offers an update: install it and complete any requested restart.
- If no update appears: availability may vary while compatibility is assessed. Check again later and confirm that your Windows version and edition remain in support.
- If an update repeatedly fails: investigate the Windows Update or servicing problem rather than assuming antivirus can compensate for missing fixes.
- If Windows says it no longer receives security updates: check whether the specific version has reached end of service. If the PC is on Windows 10, choose among a supported upgrade, eligible temporary ESU, or supported replacement hardware.
