Is Public Wi-Fi Safe? Essential Tips to Stay Protected

Public Wi-Fi is usually safe when your connection is encrypted—but HTTPS cannot verify the hotspot or prove a site is legitimate. Learn practical steps to reduce risk.

Public Wi-Fi is usually safe for everyday browsing when your connection to a website or app is encrypted, according to the FTC. But encryption does not confirm that a hotspot is genuine or that a website is trustworthy. Verify the network, check the destination, keep your device and accounts protected, and use cellular data or a personal hotspot for sensitive transactions when practical.

When is public Wi-Fi safe to use?

Most websites use encryption today, so connecting through public Wi-Fi is usually safe for ordinary use, the FTC says. Encryption helps protect information traveling between your device and the website or service. In a browser, check that the address begins with HTTPS or that the browser shows its lock symbol; the same check applies on a phone.

That protection has limits. HTTPS secures the connection to the site you reached; it does not prove the site is legitimate. A scammer can create a convincing fake website that also uses HTTPS. Check the web address carefully, and be wary of unexpected sign-in prompts or requests for payment details.

FTC public Wi-Fi guidance (February 2023) explains why encryption has made public Wi-Fi safer for most users, while emphasizing that users still need to protect themselves.

How to connect more safely

  1. Confirm the network. Ask venue staff for the official Wi-Fi name and how to sign in. Criminals can set up lookalike network names, so do not assume a hotspot is genuine just because its name resembles the venue’s. CISA’s public Wi-Fi tip card advises confirming the network name and login procedure with appropriate staff.
  2. Check the destination, not just the hotspot. Use HTTPS throughout your session, not only on the sign-in page. Before entering a password or payment information, inspect the site’s address and consider whether the request makes sense. A lock symbol is not proof that a business or page is honest.
  3. Protect your accounts and device. Use strong, unique passwords and turn on two-factor authentication where available. Keep your operating system, browser, and security software current; enable automatic updates where practical.
  4. Stop automatic joining. If your device offers the setting, disable automatic connections to public Wi-Fi when you do not need them. When you finish using a sensitive account, log out.
  5. Choose another connection for sensitive tasks when practical. CISA advises using cellular data instead of unsecured Wi-Fi for banking or purchases. A personal cellular hotspot is another option, particularly if several devices need access.

Public Wi-Fi, cellular data, or a personal hotspot?

Each option has trade-offs. Whichever you choose, the connection to the website or app still matters: use encrypted destinations and check that you are dealing with the intended service.

Option What to check Trade-offs
Public Wi-Fi Confirm the official network name and sign-in process with venue staff. Check that the site or app connection is encrypted. Convenient, but a lookalike network is possible. Avoid it for sensitive transactions when a trusted alternative is practical.
Cellular data Confirm you have coverage and that you are using the intended service. CISA recommends it over unsecured Wi-Fi for banking or purchases. Coverage and data-plan limits can affect whether it is practical; cellular is not risk-free.
Personal cellular hotspot Use a compatible device, cellular coverage, and a data plan. CISA describes a personal hotspot as generally more secure than public Wi-Fi. It can connect multiple devices, but depends on cellular service and available data.

The comparison is about practical risk and access, not a guarantee: no connection choice makes a dishonest site safe. CISA’s travel guidance (February 1, 2021) discusses using cellular data and personal hotspots as alternatives to public Wi-Fi.

Does a VPN make public Wi-Fi safe?

A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN provider’s server, but it is a separate layer of protection—not a substitute for verifying the hotspot or checking the website. It also shifts some trust from the Wi-Fi operator to the VPN provider. Depending on the app, it may not encrypt all traffic, may request sensitive permissions, or may share data with third parties.

The FTC puts the limitation plainly: “A VPN app will typically obscure the content of your traffic from your internet service provider or public Wi-Fi provider, but it doesn’t render you anonymous.” Its February 2018 guidance reported that researchers studied almost 300 VPN apps and found potential privacy and security risks in some, including apps that did not use encryption, sought sensitive or unexpected permissions, or shared data with third parties. That study does not establish the quality of any particular VPN app available today.

  • 【PROTECT YOUR NETWORK SECURITY】Our pocket wifi, unlike other vulnerable portable wifi hotspot for travel purposes supports WPA3 protocol–Preventive measures against password brute-force attacks; DNS over HTTPS & DNS over TLS–Protecting domain name system traffic and preventing data eavesdropping from malicious parties; IPv6–Built-in authentication for privacy protection, eliminating the need for network address translation.
  • 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.

If you choose a VPN, research the provider, read the app’s privacy terms, review its permissions, and check what traffic the app says it encrypts. Do not treat a VPN as proof that a site is legitimate or as a promise of anonymity.

What public Wi-Fi safety claims should you trust?

There is no current, named statistic in the cited official guidance establishing what proportion of public hotspots are unsafe or how often they are attacked. Avoid treating older claims about the share of insecure hotspots as a description of networks today. The useful distinction is not “all public Wi-Fi is safe” versus “all public Wi-Fi is dangerous”: check the network, protect the device and accounts, and choose a trusted alternative for sensitive activity when practical.
