US software shares rose on October 6, 2026, as stronger company results, AI partnerships and higher earnings expectations helped investors reassess fears that generative AI would quickly replace established software. The shift has lifted the sector, but it does not prove that AI disruption risk is over.
What happened to software stocks on October 6?
The S&P 500 software and services index gained 1.3% on Tuesday, October 6, reaching its highest level since November 2025, Reuters reported. The sector had also posted its strongest quarterly rise from July through September since the second quarter of 2020. The Reuters report was republished by Investing.com and also appeared at CNA.

This was a sector move, not the same as the broader market’s performance. The Associated Press reported that the S&P 500 rose 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4% on October 6; both were at or set records, and easing bond-market yields also helped the broader market, according to AP’s market report.

Why did confidence in software companies improve?
Results and AI partnerships supported the rebound
The recovery had been building since late June, according to Reuters. Strong earnings from Salesforce, ServiceNow and Accenture, along with partnerships between software companies and AI labs, helped bolster investor confidence. These developments suggested that established vendors could incorporate AI into their offerings rather than simply lose customers to it.

Earnings expectations rose
The Reuters report cited LSEG’s estimate for 2026 annual earnings growth in the software sector at 20.6% — LSEG, 2026, up from 13.8% — LSEG, 2026, at the end of March. That is a change in the forecast, not a guarantee of the earnings companies will ultimately deliver.
What changed in the AI disruption narrative?
From late January to its April low, the software index fell more than 26%. Investors worried that businesses could use AI to build their own applications more cheaply, reducing their need for traditional licensed software. The selloff became known as the “SaaSpocalypse.”

As the feared disruption did not materialize as quickly as some investors expected, parts of the market began to view AI as a potential tool for software vendors. Adam Turnquist, chief cross-asset strategist at LPL Financial, told Reuters: “AI has been more of an enabler for a lot of these software companies, more than a disruptor.” That is an analyst’s assessment of the trend, not proof that every vendor benefits.
Rebecca Wettemann, CEO of Valoir, told Reuters: “The whole SaaSpocalypse didn’t happen anywhere near as fast as some of the people on Wall Street thought it would.” Her observation concerns the pace of disruption; it does not establish that the competitive threat has disappeared.
How did software compare with semiconductors?
In the Reuters comparison for 2026, the software index was up 5% — Reuters, 2026 — while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was up 87.5% — Reuters, 2026 — though the semiconductor index was off its highs. These are different market categories: software and services companies sell applications and related offerings, while semiconductor companies make chips and related products. The figures are a dated snapshot from the report, not a current live-market comparison.
Cybersecurity was a notable area
Reuters reported that CrowdStrike, Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks had each gained triple-digit percentages in 2026, amid substantial company spending on cybersecurity in the age of AI. The report did not provide comparable company-level valuations or earnings analysis, so the gains do not show that the three businesses have equivalent prospects or identify a best investment.

Are AI disruption fears for software stocks over?
No. The October rally and higher earnings estimates show that expectations improved; they do not settle whether companies will eventually replace some licensed software with tools they build themselves. That question depends on how capable and economical AI coding becomes, how customers adopt it, and whether vendors can turn AI features and partnerships into durable products and revenue.
