WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out an operating-system update requirement to selected Android and iPhone accounts. If the specific OS-update screen appears, install the latest system update available for your phone and try logging in again. The reported block is server-side, so updating or reinstalling WhatsApp itself may not clear it.
What is happening with WhatsApp logins?
WABetaInfo reported on October 5, 2026, that WhatsApp is rolling out a server-side check to selected accounts on Android and iOS. Affected users may see a message asking them to update their phone’s operating system before they can log in. The report says the requirement does not depend on installing a new WhatsApp app version and cannot be skipped.

This is a third-party report; no named WhatsApp or Meta spokesperson statement confirming the new check was found in the sources reviewed. WABetaInfo also says WhatsApp has not announced which specific operating-system versions trigger the block. That means the report does not establish a universal rule or show that every phone below the newest OS version is blocked. WABetaInfo’s October 5 report

What OS versions does WhatsApp officially support?
WhatsApp’s Help Center lists Android 6.0 and later and iOS 15.1 and later as supported. It says iOS 15.5 and later will be required starting November 30, 2026. These are WhatsApp’s published support minimums; the company has not publicly identified the exact version threshold for the newly reported login screen. WhatsApp says it regularly reviews older operating systems because older, less-used devices may lack recent security updates or the functionality needed to run the app. That is its general explanation for support reviews, not a confirmed technical explanation for the reported server-side login check.
What to do if WhatsApp asks you to update your phone
- Confirm the message. Check whether the screen specifically asks you to update the phone’s operating system. A failed login by itself does not prove that the OS is too old; other login or verification errors may have different causes.
- Install an available system update. Open your phone’s Settings and use its software or system update option to check for and install the latest version available for that device. Then try WhatsApp again. The reported prompt concerns the phone OS, so updating or reinstalling the WhatsApp app may not resolve that particular block.
- If there is no update, check compatibility. Compare your phone’s installed OS with WhatsApp’s published minimums, and check the phone maker’s support information for that exact model to see whether a newer system version is available.
- Consider another phone only if needed. If your device cannot update to an OS that meets WhatsApp’s requirements, a replacement that supports a compatible Android or iOS version may be necessary to keep using WhatsApp. Check the exact model’s update support and WhatsApp’s current requirements before buying; the reported prompt alone does not mean everyone needs a new phone.
How to tell an OS block from another login problem
Use the message on screen and your phone’s update status to narrow down the issue. The reported rollout specifically shows an OS-update instruction. If you do not see that instruction, do not assume that the account is blocked for using an outdated operating system; follow the guidance for the error actually displayed.
