Why Travel Technology Is a New Frontier for AI Investment

Travel’s size and fragmented workflows make it a credible AI investment frontier, but broad sector spending is not AI spending—and adoption is not proof of returns.

Travel technology is attracting serious attention as an AI investment frontier because the industry combines enormous economic activity with complicated workflows spanning search, booking, payments, customer service and operations. But the evidence supports a case for opportunity, not a guarantee of returns: broad travel investment is not AI spending, company adoption surveys are not audited industry-wide measures, and useful AI depends on systems that can share reliable data.

Why is travel technology a frontier for AI investment?

Travel is a large, interconnected market. A single trip can involve several suppliers, changing schedules, customer preferences, payment steps and service rules. That complexity creates potential uses for AI: helping people compare options, personalizing offers, automating routine service work and coordinating operational responses. It also makes implementation harder than adding a chatbot to a single website.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reported that the sector contributed US$11.6 trillion to global GDP in 2025. Its 2026 release also put global Travel & Tourism investment above US$1 trillion that year, an 8.5% increase year on year. Those figures show the scale of the overall sector and its capital investment; they do not say how much was spent on AI, software or technology. WTTC reported nearly US$500 billion of 2025 investment combined across the United States, China, India and Saudi Arabia.

The investment thesis is therefore not simply “travel is big.” It is that AI may help coordinate information and decisions across a fragmented, multi-step industry. Whether that creates durable value depends on whether companies can connect the relevant systems and demonstrate better outcomes—not on how many pilots or conversational interfaces they announce.

How is AI changing travel booking and operations?

Planning and discovery

Conversational AI can help travelers explore destinations, shape an itinerary and organize options from multiple sources. Amadeus describes travelers combining AI tools with travel apps. This is a developing pattern of assisted planning, not evidence that one AI service can reliably find, verify and book every component of a trip.

Personalization and booking

AI can help tailor recommendations and reduce friction when travelers search and book. In Expedia Group’s survey of 214 senior travel-management-company (TMC) decision-makers across ten countries, respondents said traveler expectations included blended trip planning (85%), booking simplicity (84%), loyalty rewards (83%), personalization (81%) and mobile booking (76%). These are expectations reported by surveyed TMC leaders, not measurements of the entire traveling public. Expedia said only 30–40% of those leaders felt very confident meeting several of the rising expectations it cited.

Service and operations

Travel companies can apply automation and real-time data analysis to customer service and operational workflows. Possible tasks include responding to routine inquiries, surfacing relevant trip details for an agent, and helping staff coordinate when plans change. The business value would need to show up in measurable outcomes such as faster service resolution, fewer manual steps or improved disruption recovery; adoption alone does not establish those gains.

Infrastructure and orchestration

Behind a smooth booking experience are systems for inventory search, reservations, payments, supplier operations and traveler support. Amadeus describes platforms spanning those functions across airlines, airports, hotels, rail, agencies, tour operators and search platforms. Expedia Group identifies APIs as part of its business-to-business modernization proposition. These examples illustrate why integration is central: an AI assistant is only as useful as its access to current, compatible information and the actions it is permitted to take.

Are travel companies actually investing in AI?

There is evidence of concrete technology investment and reported AI adoption, but no common industry-wide figure for AI spending or returns in the cited material.

Company R&D spending

Amadeus reported €1.453 billion in research and development investment in 2025, equal to 22% of its annual revenue, in its Global Report 2025. The company lists AI and generative AI alongside cloud migration, biometrics and contactless travel, and quantum research among its technology themes. The R&D figure is for one company and all of its research and development; it is not an AI-only budget or proof of a specific financial return from AI.

Surveyed adoption and planned technology budgets

Expedia Group’s release, published in 2026, reported that all 214 senior TMC decision-makers in its survey said their organizations had adopted AI, while 97% said they were investing in automation and real-time data analytics. Fieldwork ran from November 26 to December 4, 2025, across the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Australia, China, India and Japan. This is a company-sponsored survey of a defined group of senior decision-makers; it is not an audited census of travel companies, and the release does not quantify AI-attributed productivity, revenue or margin gains. Fewer than half of respondents considered their emerging-technology budgets sufficient.

A separate WTTC and Trip.com Group report announcement said 91% of travel businesses planned to increase technology investment. The announcement excerpt does not state the underlying sampling methodology, and the figure concerns technology generally, not AI specifically. It should be read as a reported intention, not a verified measure of realized spending.

Can AI book and manage an entire trip?

AI can assist with planning and booking workflows, but autonomous end-to-end trip management is not established as a broadly trusted or guaranteed current capability. A tool that recommends an itinerary is different from one authorized to purchase tickets, change reservations, handle exceptions and accept responsibility when something goes wrong.

McKinsey’s 2025 travel analysis, drawing on research with Skift, reports that more than 90% of customers expressed some confidence in AI travel information, while comfort varied by use: travelers were more comfortable with open-ended inspiration than high-stakes matters such as visa information or customer-service resolutions. In Skift’s State of Travel 2025, as reported by McKinsey, only 2% were willing to let an AI tool make and modify bookings without human oversight. That gap points to a practical near-term model: AI can prepare options and assist with tasks, while people retain approval over consequential actions.

Claims about future AI agents that independently coordinate travel should be treated as forecasts. Before granting a system booking authority, a company would need clear rules for consent, payment, policy compliance, supplier confirmation, error recovery and escalation to a human.

What are the risks of AI in travel?

Fragmented data and incompatible systems

Travel information is spread across providers and platforms. McKinsey identifies siloed data and incompatible systems as implementation barriers. If availability, traveler preferences, policies and service records cannot be reconciled, an AI system may give incomplete guidance or fail when asked to complete a workflow across multiple providers.

Benefits that are difficult to prove

McKinsey says broad enterprise copilots and chatbots have often scaled quickly but yielded diffuse, hard-to-measure benefits. For travel businesses and investors, a more credible case ties a deployment to a defined workflow and baseline—for example, service resolution time, staff hours per booking or the success rate of disruption handling. The cited sources do not provide a comparable cross-company return-on-investment measure.

Trust, accuracy and accountability

Errors involving travel documents, ticket conditions or disrupted itineraries can have real consequences. Higher confidence in inspiration tools does not imply equivalent confidence in decisions that affect money, entry requirements or a traveler’s ability to get home. Companies need to define what an AI system may recommend, what it may change, when human review is required and how mistakes are corrected.

Travel demand does not guarantee attractive software economics

Industry growth and vendor returns are different questions. IATA reported 5.7% growth in global passenger traffic in 2025, estimated airline net profit of US$45 billion and a collective airline net margin of 4.2% for that year. Its Annual Review 2026 cautioned that the 2026 oil-price shock was likely to halve profits and margins. These are aviation-specific figures, not measures of the whole travel sector or travel-technology vendors; they illustrate how exposed parts of the ecosystem can be to operating costs and external shocks.

How should investors evaluate travel-AI opportunities?

Rather than treating “AI in travel” as a single market, investors can assess where a company sits in the workflow and what evidence supports its economics. These are evaluation criteria, not a published ranking of companies.

  • Layer served: Is the product a traveler-facing interface, booking or distribution system, supplier-operations tool, payments service, data layer or enterprise infrastructure?
  • Integration burden: Which supplier and company systems must connect? Are the data current and compatible, and does the company depend on participation from outside providers?
  • Measurable workflow value: What result is being improved—booking conversion, service resolution, disruption recovery or staff time—and what is the baseline? Distinguish measured outcomes from adoption claims and product forecasts.
  • Autonomy and trust: Can the system only recommend, or can it book, change or resolve? What requires approval, and what happens when the system is uncertain or wrong?
  • Economics and resilience: Consider implementation costs, recurring revenue, customer concentration and exposure to travel-provider margins, demand changes and fuel shocks.

The strongest investment case would connect a specific AI capability to a recurring, high-friction workflow, show that the necessary data and integrations work in practice, and disclose results against a meaningful baseline. Sector scale and rising technology interest help explain why the opportunity merits attention; they cannot substitute for evidence that a particular product creates lasting economic value.
