Integrating a Swap Provider? The Threat Model Your Product Inherits

When you integrate a third-party swap provider, your security responsibility does not end at choosing a reputable API. The provider may generate the quote, select a route, and return transaction data, but your product still sits between that output and the user’s authorization. You need to establish what will be signed, make approval scope understandable, handle failures safely, and be clear about which party quotes, broadcasts, and settles the trade.

What risks do you inherit when integrating a swap provider?

You inherit the risk of connecting provider output to user authorization without checking that the transaction fits the user’s intent and your product’s expectations. That is an integration risk, not evidence that a named provider has been compromised. The official materials discussed here describe different product flows; they are not independent security audits and do not establish a probability of compromise or a common incident rate.

The security goals are to protect user funds, token allowances, signing intent, transaction integrity, and any balance temporarily held in a bridge-funded router. Your interface should also preserve a clear record of the quote and transaction details presented to the user.

Where trust changes hands

  • Provider API to your application: Quotes, routes, approval details, and calldata cross this boundary. Your application decides what it will accept and show. Uniswap’s Swapping API Integration Guide says transaction data must be present and must not be modified.
  • Your application to the wallet or signer: The wallet authorizes the transaction. Ledger’s documentation describes device-verified signing as separate from the provider’s quote, route-finding, and order-execution role. A protected signing step does not independently validate the quote or route.
  • Your application to the chain: The transaction may be broadcast by the user, your application, or a service, depending on the integration. In bridge-funded router flows, your transaction composition and failure handling determine whether funding and execution are atomic.
  • Your product to the service provider: Provider terms and service responsibilities vary. Trust Wallet’s developer terms say its platform returns transaction data for the user or integrator to review, sign, and broadcast, and states: “Trust Wallet does not execute, sign, broadcast, or settle any swap transaction.” Its terms discuss third-party service provisions and allocate KYC, payment processing, and fiat-compliance responsibilities to third-party fiat providers in that context. Do not treat that allocation as a universal rule for crypto swap providers.

How should you handle provider-returned transaction data?

Treat calldata and related transaction fields as security-sensitive input, not as harmless quote metadata. Uniswap’s Swapping API Integration Guide warns: “Never Modify: The API endpoints return pre-validated and correct data. Modifying its value may cause funds to be lost or onchain transaction to revert.” That is guidance for the documented integration, not a guarantee that every provider’s output is safe or that every transaction will succeed.

  1. Check required fields and context. Confirm that the transaction data is present and nonempty, and verify the expected chain and other transaction context before presenting it for authorization.
  2. Preserve provider-returned calldata. Do not rewrite the data to fit an application-side assumption. If required data is missing or inconsistent with the flow you support, stop rather than silently constructing a different transaction.
  3. Show the material transaction details. Present the user with a review flow that makes the relevant action and approval understandable. Keep a record of the quote and transaction information shown so that the authorization decision can be reconstructed.
  4. Test simulation and failure behavior. Use the provider’s documented simulation behavior as an integration-test input. A successful simulation is not a guarantee of later execution: chain state and transaction conditions can change between simulation and broadcast.

What can an approval authorize, and for how long?

An approval is a separate security decision from the swap route. Its spender and scope affect what can happen after the transaction that prompted it. Uniswap recommends Permit2 where possible and describes its signatures as scoped to a swap. Its proxy alternative uses a standard ERC-20 approval that can remain active. The documented distinction means an integration should not present those approval paths as equivalent.

  • Review the approval target and amount or scope before asking the user to authorize it.
  • Prefer a swap-scoped permission flow where the integration supports it.
  • If a fallback requires a standard approval that can persist, explain that exposure clearly and avoid implying it expires with the swap.

How do you keep bridge-funded router execution safe?

For the documented bridge-funded router flow, funding and execution need to happen in the same transaction, and a failed execution must not be swallowed. Uniswap’s guide summarizes the responsibility as: “Atomicity is on you”. It warns that funds left in the permissionless router may be taken by anyone.

  1. Compose the operation so the router is funded and the intended execution occurs atomically.
  2. Propagate execution failure so the full operation reverts instead of leaving funds behind.
  3. Test failure paths as well as successful execution, including conditions under which the downstream swap cannot complete.

This control applies to the bridge-funded router pattern described in the provider documentation; it should not be assumed to describe every swap integration.

When should permission checks happen?

If a route uses a permissioned pool, check wallet eligibility before enabling submission. Uniswap’s permissioned-pools documentation says: “Check permissions before submitting.” Its documented permissions endpoint reports allowlist status, while the swap endpoint rejects transactions from wallets that are not allowed. Checking first can prevent an avoidable rejection and potentially wasted gas; it does not replace transaction review.

Who quotes, signs, broadcasts, and settles?

Do not infer responsibility from a product label such as “non-custodial” or from the presence of a hardware signer. Write down the role assigned to each step in the actual integration. The documented examples show why: Uniswap’s flow has the integrator check approval and request a quote before passing a transaction to the wallet to sign and broadcast; Trust Wallet describes returning data for independent review, signing, and broadcast; Ledger describes the provider as handling quote, route-finding, and order execution while Ledger handles device-verified signing.

Integration question What to establish
Who creates the quote and selects the route? Identify the provider or component responsible, and whether your application applies any additional checks.
What does the provider return? Determine whether the response contains transaction calldata, a signed or relayed order, or another execution instruction. The documented Uniswap and Trust Wallet examples describe transaction data; that should not be generalized to every provider.
Who authorizes the action? Record which wallet, device, or service signs, and what transaction details the user can inspect before approval.
Who broadcasts and handles execution? Establish whether the user, integrator, or provider broadcasts, and how errors and settlement status are communicated.
What permission checks and simulation occur? Document which checks are available, when they run, and what happens if they fail.
Which contract terms apply? Review the provider’s terms for the specific service and geography. Do not infer a universal legal allocation from one platform’s terms.

How do you assess a provider before shipping?

Use the integration model—not a general reputation claim—as the unit of review. Compare providers on quote and route control, the type of returned execution data, approval duration and scope, signing and broadcast roles, atomicity for bridge flows, simulation and permission checks, and contractual service obligations. The available official documents establish materially different roles but do not support a complete security ranking of providers.
