Tragedy gives those experiences stakes by introducing vulnerability, loss, injustice and consequences that cannot simply be undone.
That combination does not guarantee that every player will empathize or grieve. Research points to a conditional effect shaped by interactivity, immersion, character portrayal, story quality and the player’s own response.

Why a tragic character can feel personally important
A sad plot alone is not enough to create attachment. A game has to make the character’s situation intelligible, give the player some route into it and make the outcome matter. Three mechanisms usually work together:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Narrative transportation: attention is absorbed by the fictional world, reducing the sense of watching from outside.
- Identification: the player temporarily adopts the character’s viewpoint, goals or feelings without literally believing they are that person.
- Interactivity: the player chooses, aims, explores or accepts consequences through the character, making the experience partly self-authored.
Tragedy then supplies the emotional pressure. A character may be exposed to illness, betrayal, bereavement, guilt, oppression or an unavoidable choice. Because the player has spent time understanding the character and acting through them, the loss is processed as more than information about a fictional person.

Transportation makes the fictional world feel present
Transportation is the feeling of being mentally drawn into a story world. Sound, pacing, environmental detail, dialogue and the need to pay attention to unfolding events can all support it. In a transported state, the player’s attention is organized around what the character sees, wants and fears rather than around the fact that a screen is displaying a constructed narrative.
Transportation does not mean losing the ability to distinguish fiction from reality. It means that, for a period, the game’s internal events become the most relevant frame for interpreting what happens next. A tragic reveal can therefore arrive with the force of an event the player has been tracking personally, not merely a twist being observed.
Anna Felnhofer, Lena Wittmann, Adelais Reichmann, Dorothea König-Teshnizi and Oswald D. Kothgassner reported this pattern in a 2023 online experiment with 228 participants aged 15 to 65. Participants either selected options in an interactive-fiction story or read the story passively. Interactivity, individual immersive tendencies and transportation into the narrative significantly predicted identification with the main character. The result supports transportation as one part of a larger process, not as a universal explanation for every emotional reaction.

Identification is more specific than simply liking a character. It involves temporarily following the character’s perspective, priorities and emotional logic. Players may ask what the character knows, anticipate what they will do, or interpret a scene through their fears. The player remains aware of their own identity, but the character’s viewpoint becomes the route through which the story is understood.
Games can reinforce identification by giving the character goals that the player must pursue: reaching a location, protecting someone, solving a problem or deciding whether to trust another person. The player repeatedly rehearses the character’s priorities. When the character suffers, the player has a developed model of what that suffering means and what it threatens.
Character similarity can help, but it is not required. A player can identify with a character’s predicament, moral conflict or need for recognition without sharing their age, history or personality. Felnhofer and colleagues specifically note that the effects of character similarity and engaging content remain open questions, so similarity should not be treated as a proven prerequisite.

Control turns sympathy into participation
In a film, a viewer witnesses a protagonist’s decision. In a game, the player may select the dialogue, take the risk, miss the attack, explore the room or decide to continue despite warning signs. Even when the broad plot is fixed, the player enacts a sequence of actions that carries the character toward the next event.
Agency creates responsibility
Control can make consequences feel connected to the player’s own activity. A failed rescue may be remembered not only as something that happened to a character but as the result of a decision, hesitation or mistake made while playing. This does not mean the player is morally responsible for a scripted tragedy; it means the event has a personal action history.
Choices create counterfactuals
Interactive stories also generate alternatives. After a death or betrayal, players can imagine a different dialogue choice, route or timing that might have changed the outcome, even when the game provides no such route. That counterfactual thinking can keep an event active in memory and intensify regret or helplessness.
Limits of agency matter
Agency is not identical to freedom. A game may offer meaningful branching, minor dialogue variations or only the ability to move through a predetermined sequence. The emotional effect depends on what the player can actually influence and how clearly the game communicates those limits. A forced tragedy can still be powerful, but its meaning differs from a loss that follows a player’s chosen path.
Why tragedy supplies stronger stakes
Tragedy focuses attention on four kinds of stakes:
- Vulnerability: the character has a specific weakness, need or exposure rather than generic danger.
- Loss: a relationship, future, ability, home or sense of self is taken away.
- Injustice: the outcome feels undeserved, making the player compare what happened with what should have happened.
- Irreversibility: death, separation or a permanent change cannot be fully repaired by the next scene.
Specific vulnerability is especially important. “The hero is sad” gives little to understand; a character struggling with a particular memory, delusion, responsibility or relationship gives the player a structure for empathy. The more precisely the game shows what is threatened, the less the tragedy functions as a generic emotional signal.

Injustice can produce a different response from grief. A deserved punishment may feel morally resolving, while an undeserved loss can provoke anger, protectiveness or a desire to challenge the game’s world. The same ending can therefore be experienced as sorrowful, satisfying, infuriating or some combination, depending on how the story frames responsibility.

Attachment is more than enjoyment
A player can be attached to a tragic character without wanting the character to succeed in every scene. Julia Ayumi Bopp, Livia J. Müller, Lena Aeschbach, Klaus Opwis and Elisa Mekler collected qualitative responses from 213 players in 2019 and identified seven forms of emotional attachment. Their categories ranged from excitement about a character’s gameplay competence and admiration for a role model to “deep concern for characters’ well-being.”
That range explains why two players can finish the same story with different descriptions of their connection. One may admire a character’s discipline, another may feel protective, another may enjoy controlling a highly capable avatar, and another may grieve a relationship. Concern, respect, fascination, identification and sorrow are distinct forms of attachment that can overlap.
Competence can even coexist with tragedy. A character who is effective in combat or problem-solving may be enjoyable to control while also being psychologically fragile. The pleasure of mastery does not cancel concern for the person represented by the avatar.

The strongest sense of proximity often comes from first-person or tightly aligned perspective, where movement, attention and decision-making are organized around the character’s body. This is sometimes called embodiment: the player’s actions are mapped onto what the character can do, and the game presents consequences from that character’s position.
Evidence from Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice illustrates the mechanism without proving that every player responds identically. In a two-factor experiment, participants either played the first 45 minutes or watched gameplay footage. The study measured transportation into the story world, identification with Senua and attitudes related to mental-health stigma. Its theoretical account proposes that direct control can deepen connection by placing the player in the body and perspective of a character who has a mental illness.
Playing and watching are not psychologically equivalent conditions. A viewer can understand Senua’s situation and empathize with her while remaining outside the action. A player must perform movements and decisions through the character. The difference is one reason control may strengthen identification, although the experiment does not establish that gameplay always produces more empathy than viewing.

What research says about empathy, enjoyment and endings
Karl F. MacDorman’s 2019 experiment tested 738 participants in a 2 × 2 × 2 design. It varied whether the central figure was a hero or villain, whether a subplot ended tragically or happily, and whether the depiction was computer-animated or recorded. Participants showed greater empathy and enjoyment in the hero condition. Just endings—where the hero was rewarded and the villain punished—produced much greater pleasure than unjust endings.
The study also warns against a single-formula explanation. For a real hero with a tragic ending, emotional empathy was a stronger predictor of enjoyment than transportation. In another comparison, transportation was more predictive. Which mechanism mattered most depended on the conditions, so it is inaccurate to claim that tragic endings universally create stronger attachment or that transportation always dominates.

Why a character’s death can stay with you
A death may remain memorable because it combines several unfinished processes. The player has to update a mental model of the character, reinterpret earlier scenes, and adapt to a changed set of goals or relationships. If the player had control over the character’s route, the event also carries a record of actions and alternatives.
Games can make this adjustment tangible. A missing party member changes available abilities; an emptied room removes a familiar routine; a save file preserves the point at which the loss occurred. These design consequences give absence a practical form. The player encounters reminders while continuing to play, so grief is not confined to a single cutscene.
Remembering a death does not indicate confusion between fiction and reality. Emotional systems respond to meaning, attention and rehearsal, all of which can be engaged by fictional events. A player can know that a character is invented while still experiencing genuine sadness, anger or relief about what happens to them.

How Silent Hill 2 illustrates catharsis and inner struggle
In 2024, Filipe Tomé, Ana Pires, Anna Jiskrová, Ana Saial and Pedro F. Campos interviewed 11 participants about Silent Hill 2. Participants reported deeper understanding of mental-health issues, empathy toward characters, stronger attachment to their inner struggles and gameplay experienced as cathartic. One conclusion was that “participants had a greater attachment to the characters’ inner struggles and their gameplay was experienced as cathartic.”

Catharsis here should be read as a description of participants’ experience, not a universal therapeutic effect. The interviews show how some players interpreted confronting painful material through play; they do not establish that the game treats a mental-health condition, improves symptoms or produces the same response in a larger population.
Representation can deepen empathy—or reinforce stigma
Mental illness is a particularly sensitive source of tragic characterization. A careful portrayal can invite players to understand a character’s perceptions, constraints and coping strategies. A stereotyped portrayal may instead equate illness with violence, deceit or helplessness and strengthen existing stigma.
The Hellblade research explicitly treats this as an ethical risk. Directly placing players in a character’s perspective may support understanding, but harmful or inaccurate depictions can have the opposite effect. Emotional intensity is not evidence of accuracy. Players and creators should distinguish a moving portrayal from a medically reliable one, and should avoid treating one fictional experience as representative of everyone with the same diagnosis.

Comparing routes to emotional connection
The following axes help explain why two tragic games can feel very different without ranking one as universally more powerful.
| Axis | Closer connection tends to come from | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Agency | Direct control over movement, dialogue or consequential choices | What can the player actually change, and which outcomes are fixed? |
| Proximity | First-person or tightly aligned embodiment | Does the player experience events through the character or mainly observe a companion? |
| Vulnerability | Psychologically specific suffering | What exactly is threatened, and does the game show the character’s inner conflict? |
| Consequence | Changes to relationships, abilities, routes or endings | Does the player’s action history alter what follows the tragedy? |
| Representation | Contextualized, non-stereotyped treatment of trauma or mental illness | Does the portrayal preserve the character’s agency and individuality? |
Why some tragic characters do not connect
Emotional attachment is not automatic. A tragedy may fail to land when:
- the player has too little time to understand the character’s goals or relationships;
- the writing announces suffering without showing its specific consequences;
- choices appear cosmetic, so the player feels no meaningful participation;
- the character’s behavior is inconsistent without an understandable reason;
- the portrayal relies on stereotypes that make empathy difficult or ethically troubling;
- the player is distracted, not personally engaged by the theme, or prefers a different style of play.
These factors also explain disagreement between players. One person may value identification with a character’s inner life, while another responds mainly to competence, moral choice or a relationship with a companion. Neither reaction is the single correct measure of whether the writing worked.
A practical way to understand your own reaction
After a tragic storyline, ask yourself:
- Whose viewpoint did I occupy? Was I making decisions as the character, guiding them from outside or mainly observing someone else?
- What was I protecting? Identify the relationship, goal, future or identity that made the loss meaningful.
- What did I control? Separate consequences caused by your choices from events the story required.
- Which feeling dominated? Grief, anger at injustice, admiration, guilt, relief and concern imply different forms of attachment.
- What remains unresolved? Lingering thoughts may come from unanswered questions, imagined alternatives or the practical absence of the character in later play.
This reflection treats your response as a combination of design and personal meaning. It does not assume that stronger sadness means better writing, or that a player who feels little has missed the point.
The most accurate conclusion
Tragic video-game characters create strong emotional connections when transportation, identification and interactivity converge on a vulnerable person whose losses have clear meaning. Player control can make consequences feel personally enacted; close perspective can make an inner life easier to access; and tragedy can expose stakes that ordinary success never reveals.
The evidence supports mechanisms and conditions, not a universal rule. Felnhofer’s interactive-fiction experiment links interactivity and transportation with identification; Bopp’s player accounts show several kinds of attachment; MacDorman’s experiment demonstrates that empathy, transportation, justice and enjoyment vary by condition; and the Hellblade and Silent Hill 2 studies show how mental-health themes can foster understanding for some players while requiring careful representation. The lasting power of a tragic character therefore comes not from sadness by itself, but from the relationship between what the game asks you to feel, what it lets you do and what the character stands to lose.
