Why did Cook step down before the iPhone Duo launch?
In an interview with The Independent, reported by MacRumors on October 8, 2026, Cook said he wanted Ternus to start his CEO tenure with the benefit of a strong product moment: “I wanted John to have some wind at his back.” He added, “And the wind at Apple is very much based on the product cycle.”

Cook described the upcoming phone as part of that momentum: “This product cycle feels unbelievably great. The Duo is coming in a few weeks and it’s amazing.” The iPhone Duo is a newly announced foldable iPhone; Apple announced it on September 9, eight days after Ternus became CEO.

That makes the product launch relevant to Cook’s explanation of the timing, but not the sole established reason for the transition. Cook also described a long-planned succession, and in a separate employee meeting said the timing reflected Apple’s roadmap and finances as well as Ternus’s readiness.

Was the change mainly about the iPhone launch?
Cook’s remarks point to two compatible parts of the explanation. The succession itself had been prepared over years; the launch timing gave Ternus an especially visible product cycle early in his tenure. In his interview, Cook said Apple had set out to create “the best transition ever, a textbook example that people could look back to and learn from.”
Apple’s official announcement established the leadership change and its effective date, but it did not say the iPhone Duo launch was the reason for choosing that date. The product-cycle rationale comes from Cook’s later interview comments, while the roadmap, financial and readiness factors come from the reported employee meeting.

Did Cook step down because of health problems?
The employee-meeting report says Cook denied speculation about health problems, said he was healthy and expected to remain in his executive-chairman role for a long time. The available accounts therefore do not establish health as a reason for his departure from the CEO role.
What will Cook do as executive chairman?
Apple said Cook would assist with certain company matters, including engagement with policymakers around the world. In the later interview recap, 9to5Mac reported that Cook described worldwide policy as his immediate focus and said he would help Ternus as requested.

Apple’s announcement also put the scale of Cook’s tenure in company-reported figures: annual revenue rose from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, and the company said its installed base exceeded 2.5 billion active devices. These are figures Apple cited in its April 20 announcement, not independent estimates.
