If an unexpected email says a Google password-change request “was not made” and urges you to click a link to secure your account, don’t use that link. A September 2026 report describes this as a phishing pattern; check your account by opening Google Account directly in a new browser tab instead. The wording alone cannot prove whether a message is genuine or fraudulent.
What the reported email says—and why to be cautious
A September 17, 2026 report on DEV Community, attributed to Feroze Ashraff and said to have first appeared at NZ AI Security, describes an email claiming: “Someone requested a password change for your Google Account and this change was not made.” The message reportedly tells recipients to click if they did not make the request. The report characterizes this email pattern as a scam, but it is a secondary account, not an official Google notice or a verified message sample with headers.

The report says this format had been circulating in New Zealand since March 2026. That is the report’s claim, not an independently confirmed prevalence finding.

- Leave the email link alone. Don’t click it, reply, or enter your password on a page it opens.
- Open a new browser tab and navigate to your Google Account yourself, using a saved bookmark or typing the address you normally use.
- Once signed in, review the account’s security information and recent activity. If you see an unfamiliar event or setting, use the controls inside the account to secure it.
- If the account shows no matching activity, treat the email as suspicious and report or delete it using your mail service’s controls.
This independent route avoids trusting a link supplied by an unexpected security message. A familiar Google name or logo in the email is not enough to establish its origin.

Why the phrase does not authenticate an email
Chrome’s official Password Manager interface contains similar wording in a different context: after a password-change flow fails, it can say, “Your password wasn’t changed, but you should still be able to access the site with your current password.” The dialog offers a “Change it on the site” action. These strings appear in Chromium’s password-manager interface text.
That is an in-product message about a failed password-change attempt. It does not show that Google sent the reported email, nor does it prove that every email using similar wording is fake. Evaluate the message’s context and check account activity independently rather than relying on a phrase alone.

What to examine if you are still unsure
- Sender: Inspect the full sender address, not just the displayed name. A display name can be familiar without proving who sent the message.
- Destination: If you need to assess a link, inspect its actual destination without opening it. Do not sign in through a link in an unexpected alert.
- Account activity: Check whether the relevant event appears after you reach the account independently. The email itself is not a reliable substitute for that check.
The available reporting does not provide an independently verified specimen or a legitimate Google email for a direct comparison, so no single visual feature can be offered here as a definitive test.
Optional account hardening
For accounts managed by an organization, Google Workspace’s security guidance recommends measures including two-step verification and security keys. A hardware security key is an optional account-protection measure—not a way to identify a phishing email, and not a requirement for every personal Google Account.
