Why the 2020 MacBook Air M1 May Still Be Worth Keeping

The MacBook Air M1 is approaching six years old, but age alone is not a reason to replace it. Check compatibility, battery condition and the tasks you need it to handle.

The MacBook Air with M1, announced in November 2020, is approaching six years old in October 2026. That alone is not a reason to replace it: Apple still lists the model as compatible with macOS Tahoe 26. Whether to keep yours comes down to whether it handles your actual work, its battery still meets your needs, and it has the display, memory, storage, ports and app compatibility you require.

Is the M1 MacBook Air still good in 2026?

For an owner whose everyday apps and tasks remain responsive, it can still be a practical laptop. Apple’s specifications show an M1 chip, a 13.3-inch Retina display with 2560-by-1600 resolution, and two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. Those features remain useful for ordinary work, browsing and media, but specifications cannot establish how well the computer performs with any particular person’s applications.

Apple includes the MacBook Air (M1, 2020) on its macOS Tahoe 26 compatibility list. That confirms compatibility with this release; Apple has not stated an end date for future macOS support. App requirements can also differ from macOS compatibility, so check the software you rely on before deciding.

What would make keeping it the sensible choice?

  • Your regular apps and typical workloads remain responsive enough for you.
  • The battery lasts as long as you need away from a charger, or a service option would address the problem.
  • Your available memory and storage are sufficient for your files and work.
  • The screen and two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports meet your device and display needs.
  • The macOS release and app versions you require support this model.

These are practical decision checks, not a claim that every M1 Air remains suitable for every workload. If a required app, workflow or peripheral is the obstacle, identify that specific shortfall before replacing the whole computer.

Check the battery before blaming the age of the Mac

Battery age is often more relevant to day-to-day usefulness than the model year. Apple lists 1,000 cycles as the maximum cycle count for the MacBook Air (M1, 2020). It says a battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions; that is a design expectation, not a guarantee of current runtime. Your actual unplugged use and the reported battery condition matter.

Find the cycle count

  1. Hold Option while opening the Apple menu.
  2. Select System Information.
  3. In the sidebar, open Hardware > Power and review Battery Information.

Use the count as one diagnostic rather than a replacement deadline. Apple says cycle count can help indicate battery age, while battery performance may diminish over time.

Apple Late 2020 MacBook Air with Apple M1 Chip (13 inch, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) Silver (Renewed)
  • Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
  • Charge less with up to 18 hours of battery life - 13.3-inch Retina display with P3 wide color
  • 8-core CPU delivers up to 3.5x faster performance to tackle projects faster than ever before
  • Up to eight GPU cores with up to 5x faster graphics - FaceTime HD camera for clearer, sharper video calls
  • 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning - 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid

Read the battery health status

Apple says Service Recommended means the battery’s ability to hold charge is reduced or it is not functioning normally. On Apple silicon Macs, battery health management monitors temperature history and charging patterns and may temporarily limit maximum charging to reduce chemical aging. A charge that stops short of 100% is therefore not, by itself, proof that the battery has failed.

If the computer is otherwise meeting your needs but battery life is not, Apple says out-of-warranty battery service is available for a charge. Check local cost and availability before comparing service with replacement.

Know what Apple’s original battery figures do—and do not—tell you

Apple’s 2020 technical specifications claimed up to 15 hours of wireless web use and up to 18 hours of Apple TV app movie playback for the new M1 Air. These were manufacturer figures under defined test conditions; Apple notes the movie playback test used preproduction systems. They are not a prediction of runtime from a six-year-old battery. Apple’s listed hardware details, including the display and ports, are available in its MacBook Air (M1, 2020) technical specifications.

When an upgrade solves a real problem

Keeping an older laptop is not automatically the cheaper or better choice if it blocks work you need to do. An upgrade is easier to justify when a specific limitation persists after considering a smaller fix:

  • macOS
  • Work is consistently too slow: assess the applications and tasks that cause the slowdown rather than relying on the model’s age or launch-era chip claims. The official sources here do not provide a current controlled comparison with a particular 2026 laptop.
  • Capacity is inadequate: if memory or storage constraints prevent your actual workflow, a replacement with suitable capacity may be necessary.
  • The battery disrupts your day: compare the local cost and availability of Apple battery service with replacement.
  • A required connection is missing: the M1 Air has two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports. A compatible USB-C hub or adapter may handle a need for more wired connections, but check the exact device’s compatibility and display support.
  • Required software no longer supports it: check the specific app’s system requirements as well as the macOS versions compatible with the computer.

Make the decision from your own use

Before spending on a new Mac, write down the tasks that are frustrating you, check battery health and cycle count, and verify the requirements of the apps and peripherals you depend on. If the M1 Air still handles those tasks and its battery and capacity work for you, its age alone does not make an upgrade necessary. If a concrete limitation remains, compare targeted service or an accessory with a replacement that addresses it.
