Tennis players change ends on a set schedule so both sides of the court are shared during play. Some changes come with a brief rest, but others—most notably after the first game of a set and during a tie-break—do not. Under the ITF’s 2026 rules, a qualifying changeover lasts up to 90 seconds; a break between sets lasts up to 120 seconds.
Changing ends is not the same as taking a break
Changing ends means switching to the opposite side of the court. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) sets when that switch happens. A changeover is the permitted rest at certain game-end switches. Players change ends more often than they receive a sit-down break.

The ITF’s 2026 Rules of Tennis, Rules 10 and 29, set the schedule and time limits. Rule 29 states: “As a principle, play should be continuous, from the time the match starts (when the first service of the match is put in play) until the match finishes.”

During a set
Players change ends at the end of the first game, the third game, and every subsequent odd-numbered game. In practical terms, they switch after games 1, 3, 5, 7, and so on.

At the end of a set
Players also change ends when a set finishes if it ended with an odd total number of games. If it ended with an even total, they do not switch immediately; the change happens after the first game of the next set.
During a tie-break
Players change ends after every six points in a tie-break. Those switches are part of the tie-break’s playing sequence and do not include a rest.

How long are tennis changeovers and set breaks?

Under Rule 29, the timing window runs from the end of one point to the first service of the next point. The 90- and 120-second periods are maximums in the standard rules, not guaranteed minimums; event organizers may apply to the ITF for approval to extend them.
Why players use the permitted breaks
The rules define when players may pause, not a guaranteed physical effect of the pause. The WTA’s “Tennis explained: Learn the game” says changeovers “allow players to recover mentally and physically at their bench.” Players may also use the interval for drinks or snacks and to evaluate their game plan. These are practical uses of the time, not a promise that a break will produce a particular recovery benefit.

Other breaks and exceptions
The standard changeover and set-break limits are not the only time allowances in the rules. The ITF’s 2026 rules also provide for narrow, defined exceptions:
- Damaged clothing, footwear, or necessary equipment: A player may receive reasonable extra time to deal with damage or replacement needs outside their control. The racket is excluded from this provision.
- Medical time-out: A player with a treatable medical condition may be allowed one time-out of three minutes.
- Toilet or change-of-attire breaks: Organizers may announce limited allowances for these breaks.
- Longer rest in some matches: Organizers may announce a rest period of up to ten minutes after the third set of a best-of-five match or after the second set of a best-of-three match.
The rules do not grant extra time simply because a player needs to recover condition. These exceptions and event-specific provisions are separate from the regular changeover schedule.
