Start the eligible player with the strongest expected role and scoring-adjusted weekly projection—not the player whose roster label sounds better. A flex is a lineup slot, not a position: depending on your league rules, it may accept a running back, wide receiver or tight end. Compare the actual candidates under your scoring settings, then check their availability and kickoff deadlines.
What “flex vs. wide receiver” means
A wide receiver (WR) is a player position. A flex is a roster slot that can accept one or more positions defined by your league. ESPN’s general flex definition includes running backs (RBs), WRs and tight ends (TEs), but custom leagues can use different eligibility rules. Check the slot in your league before making a comparison: ESPN roster settings.

If the open slot is a WR-only position, an RB or TE cannot fill it. If it is a flex slot, compare every eligible candidate—not just WRs—against the same scoring and weekly expectations.

In ESPN’s standard PPR format, each reception earns a point; in non-PPR, a catch earns no additional point. Half-PPR and custom leagues can assign different reception values or add bonuses, so use the scoring shown in your league rather than assuming a default. See ESPN’s scoring-format explanation.

- PPR: A player expected to catch many passes can gain value even without a touchdown. That can favor a high-volume WR or a pass-catching RB.
- Non-PPR: Since catches do not score directly, yardage and touchdowns account for relatively more of the comparison.
- Custom scoring: Account for your league’s reception value and any relevant bonuses before comparing projections.
Historical position-group averages are context, not a start/sit rule. NFL.com Fantasy Managing Editor Graham Barfield reported that in the six-season sample discussed in his circa-2019 article, WR25–WR36 averaged 2.3 more PPR points per game than RB25–RB36. In the same comparison under standard scoring, RB25–RB36 averaged 0.4 more points per game than WR25–WR36. How to compare the players you can actually start

A practical start/sit process
- Identify the vacant slot. In your league’s roster or lineup view, confirm whether it is WR-only or flex and which positions qualify.
- Apply your league’s scoring. Check reception scoring and custom bonuses. Do not compare a PPR projection with a non-PPR projection as if they were equivalent.
- Assess likely involvement. Compare expected routes and targets for WRs, and touches plus receiving work for RBs. Targets are a useful opportunity signal, not a promise of points.
- Use current-week projections as a cross-check. Compare candidates under the same scoring settings, while remembering that projections are estimates. The difference between two projections is not a certainty about who will score more.
- Check status and lineup timing. Review the latest official availability information before kickoff. ESPN says roster moves involving a player may be made until that player’s team is scheduled to begin its game in the scoring period; confirm the deadline and rules on your own platform.
- Choose from the information for that week. A specific recommendation requires the candidate names, league scoring, eligible slot, week and current player status. Without those details, naming a starter would be guesswork.
