If you want wireless Steam PC VR on a headset you already own, start with Valve’s Steam Link app: it supports specific Meta Quest, PICO and HTC headsets. For playing on a TV, phone or computer without VR, Steam Link is also the simplest place to start. Sunshine with Moonlight offers a broader PC-to-device streaming route. None of these options is a proven performance match for Steam Frame, whose dedicated wireless hardware and standalone SteamOS play set it apart.
Which Steam Frame alternative fits your setup?
| Your priority | Route to consider | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless Steam PC VR on a headset you own | Steam Link VR on a supported Quest, PICO or HTC headset | Exact model support, SteamVR setup, and network requirements |
| Steam games on a TV, phone or tablet | Steam Link / Remote Play | Client-app availability and suitable input controls |
| PC streaming with a wider range of client devices | Sunshine host with Moonlight client | Host and client compatibility, configuration comfort, and whether you need VR |

For wireless PC VR, check Steam Link headset support
Valve says Steam Link VR streams from a PC running Steam and SteamVR. Its current support information lists Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro, along with PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, PICO Neo 3, HTC Vive Focus Vision and HTC Vive XR Elite. Compatibility is model-specific; support for one consumer headset does not establish support for every device from the same manufacturer. Check Valve’s headset support FAQ before choosing or setting up a device. Valve’s Steam Remote Play page also lists Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro.
Valve’s published Steam Link VR guidance calls for a 5GHz Wi-Fi 5 network and recommends connecting the PC to the router with Ethernet. Treat these as setup requirements and recommendations, not promises of a particular visual quality or latency. Valve’s September 25, 2025 announcement described basic streaming functionality for the named PICO and HTC models; consult the current FAQ for any later support changes. The announcement is available at Steam Link VR now available on PICO and HTC headsets.

For TV, phone or tablet play, use Steam Link
If you do not need VR, Steam Link streams games from a computer running Steam to supported client devices. Valve lists phones, tablets, televisions, computers and Raspberry Pi devices among destinations. The client sends your input back to the host PC, so check both that the destination supports Steam Link and that your controller or other input method suits the game. See Steam Remote Play for device information and Valve’s Steam Link hardware guidance for TV streaming details.
For a broader software route, consider Sunshine and Moonlight
Moonlight is an open-source game-streaming client project that lists desktop, mobile, television and other platforms. Its FAQ identifies Sunshine as a host option, making Sunshine plus Moonlight one route for streaming from a PC to a range of devices. Review the Moonlight project page and its FAQ to check the host and client platforms that fit your setup.

NVIDIA describes GameStream as a way to access games on a GeForce GTX or RTX PC from a SHIELD TV or SHIELD Tablet, and its support page advertises up to 4K HDR at 60 FPS. Those are NVIDIA’s published capability statements, not independent test results. Moonlight’s project page says NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience and SHIELD streaming feature are being discontinued, so check NVIDIA’s current GameStream guidance and device availability before building a new setup around it.

What Steam Frame adds beyond an existing streaming client
Valve describes Steam Frame as a streaming-first wireless VR headset that can also run standalone games using SteamOS. Its product page lists 2160×2160 LCD panels per eye, supported refresh rates from 72 to 144Hz, Wi-Fi 7 and an included Wi-Fi 6E adapter for a direct PC link. Valve also describes dual radios and eye-tracked foveated streaming. These are Valve’s specifications and product claims, not independently measured comparisons. An existing headset running Steam Link can stream PC VR, but the cited sources do not establish feature parity with Steam Frame. See Valve’s Steam Frame product page for its specifications.
