It may be a headquarters region, postal address, legal registration, parent-company location, founding metro or workforce geography. To check the claim, first identify the ranking’s location definition and edition date, then verify the exact company entity against current first-party and structured records.
Why the city beside a startup is often misunderstood
Most location disputes begin with a silent assumption: that every database field called “city” means the same thing. It does not. One service may store where an organization says it is headquartered; another may group the company into a metropolitan area; a career ranking may place a subsidiary under its parent; an index may credit jobs or patents to the metro where founders started the company. Those are different observations, even when they display the same city name.

A ranking can therefore be internally consistent and still look wrong to a reader checking a company’s current office. The useful question is not simply “Which city is correct?” It is “Which geographic fact did this ranking measure, for which entity, and on what date?”

| Label or concept | What it describes | Why it can differ from another city |
|---|---|---|
| Headquarters | The organization’s stated central headquarters | A company can move its headquarters while retaining offices elsewhere. |
| Headquarters region | A broader regional grouping around headquarters | The displayed metro or region may not be the municipality in the postal address. |
| HQ postal address | The postal code and address associated with headquarters | A mailing address can fall in a neighboring municipality or postal zone. |
| Legal registration | The registered office or jurisdiction recorded by a government or filing authority | Legal domicile may be selected for administrative reasons and may have little to do with daily operations. |
| Operating office | A site where staff, management or production work | The largest office can be in a different city from the legal or corporate headquarters. |
| Founding metro | The metropolitan area associated with the company’s founding or founders | Later headquarters, jobs and patents may be elsewhere. |
| Workforce geography | Where employees or career outcomes are observed | Remote work and distributed teams make employee concentration different from the HQ address. |
| Parent-company geography | The location assigned to a corporate parent after aggregation | A majority-owned subsidiary can disappear as a separate geographic entity in the ranking. |
Do not replace one of these definitions with another without saying so. “The company is in City A” is incomplete unless the underlying field is identified.

What well-known ranking and data systems actually measure
Crunchbase location fields and Crunchbase Rank
Crunchbase defines its headquarters field as “Headquarters Location | Where the organization is headquartered.” It also maintains separate headquarters-region information and the postal code of the organization’s headquarters address. A headquarters listing should therefore be read as a structured field, not as proof that every employee or business activity is in that municipality.
Crunchbase Rank is a relative, algorithmic score. Its inputs include total funding, relationship strength in the Crunchbase ecosystem and recent profile views. Those variables describe visibility and activity in the database; they do not turn the rank into a headquarters survey. A company can rank highly while its location record is old, broad or attached to a parent entity.
For a reproducible geographic check, use the headquarters postal-code field when available. Crunchbase supports postal-code filters and exports, allowing you to define a location slice more precisely than a free-text city search. Save the filter criteria and export date so another person can reproduce the result.
LinkedIn Top Companies and Top Startups
LinkedIn’s Top Companies list is a career-oriented ranking, not a headquarters directory. LinkedIn says the ranking, published by LinkedIn News, uses a weighted methodology based on exclusive LinkedIn data analyzing the career paths of millions of professionals globally. Its 2026 methodology uses eight pillars covering advancement, skills growth, stability, external opportunity, affinity, gender diversity, educational background and related career-progression measures.
That purpose changes how a displayed country or city should be interpreted. The score reflects employee and career signals, so it should not be used as a direct count of offices, jobs or legal registrations. LinkedIn also says only parent companies are eligible; data on majority-owned subsidiaries are wrapped into the parent company’s total score. A subsidiary may consequently appear under the parent’s country or headquarters even when its own website lists another city.

LinkedIn says its 2026 Top Companies lists cover 12 markets. The annual Top Startups list has a minimum of 50 employees, while the main Top Companies list excludes small businesses because it requires sufficient data liquidity. A missing startup or an apparent location change can therefore reflect eligibility and data-availability rules rather than a physical move.
StartOut’s metro impact index
StartOut measures the impact of entrepreneurs and founders on a metro using the headquarters of companies they founded. Its methodology states that the impact of individual entrepreneurs and founders on a metro is measured by the headquarters location of their companies. It can also credit jobs and patents to the founding metro even when the activity occurs in another city.
Those results are attribution indices, not literal counts of all local activity on the day you read the page. The first launch identified 56,623 high-growth US companies and 77 qualified US metros under the index’s criteria. The second launch identified 90,946 companies and 118 qualified metros. Because the two launches use their respective methodology and coverage, their totals should not be compared as if they were a single, continuously updated census.
OECD company matching
The OECD’s 2026 matching workflow illustrates why entity resolution matters before location comparison. It uses homepage URLs, social URLs, company names, country, city, postal code and foundation dates. Crunchbase and Dealroom supplied homepage URLs in more than 96% of the cases used for linkage. Crunchbase links were available in 22% of records and were used for additional matching when homepage URLs did not resolve the match.
A URL match is a strong signal, but not a guarantee. Name-only matching can collide when different companies have similar names, while a rebrand can make a valid company look like a new entity. Country, city, postal code and foundation date provide useful collision controls when the homepage is missing or has changed.

Why two sources can disagree without either being simply wrong
The field was never the same
A ranking may expose only a single location label even though its underlying data distinguishes headquarters, region and postal code. Another service may show a legal address or an inferred metro. If one record says “Boston” and another says a nearby municipality, check whether one is a metro grouping and the other is the actual postal address before calling the discrepancy an error.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The company changed offices
Location data has an observation date, whether or not the interface displays it prominently. A company can have a former headquarters, a current headquarters, a registered office and a large operating site at the same time. An undated directory entry may preserve the former address while a current company contact page shows the new one.
A parent absorbed the subsidiary
Corporate ownership changes the unit being ranked. A subsidiary’s brand, employees and website can remain distinct while a ranking scores only the parent. When a ranking says only parent companies are eligible, the parent’s location and country are the relevant fields for that list; the subsidiary’s address is a separate fact, not a correction to the parent record.
Founding-metro attribution moved the activity
Founders may establish a company in one metro, move the headquarters, hire elsewhere and file patents from several locations. An index that intentionally credits those outcomes to the founding metro is answering a question about entrepreneurial origin and attributed impact. It is not claiming that every credited job or patent physically remains there.
Linkage matched the wrong entity
Similar names, old domains, acquisitions and rebrands can connect a record to the wrong organization. A name-only match is especially risky when two companies share a common term. A normalized homepage URL is a better first key; country, city, postal code and foundation date then help confirm that the match is plausible.

Update schedules differ
One database may update when a profile is edited, another during a scheduled refresh and a ranking only for a new annual edition. Comparing a continuously updated record with a dated list without recording both observation dates creates a false contradiction.
A defensible workflow for checking a startup’s ranked location
- Freeze the claim. Save the ranking name, edition, publication date, source URL, displayed company name and exact displayed location. Capture the page or export as it appeared, because a live profile may change after you begin checking it.
- Define the geography. Write down whether the ranking appears to use headquarters, headquarters region, postal address, legal registration, operating office, founding metro, workforce geography or parent-company location. If the methodology does not say, mark the field as undefined rather than assuming HQ.
- Resolve the entity. Record the canonical company name, current homepage, official LinkedIn page, legal name when available, parent company and known subsidiaries. Check for rebrands, acquisitions and similarly named organizations before comparing addresses.
- Check first-party evidence. Inspect the company’s current website, official contact or about page, regulatory filing or government register. Record the wording of the address and the page or filing date. “Registered office,” “headquarters,” “corporate office” and “mailing address” are not interchangeable labels.
- Cross-check structured records. Compare the ranking with Crunchbase and other structured databases. Start with a normalized homepage URL. If that fails, normalize the company name and compare country, city, postal code and foundation date, following the matching logic described in the OECD’s 2026 workflow.
- Use the postal code as a precision test. Where the database supports it, filter or export headquarters postal codes instead of relying on a city text search. Check whether the postal code belongs to the municipality shown, a neighboring municipality or a broader metropolitan grouping.
- Investigate every conflict by type and date. List the current HQ, former HQ, registered office and largest operating site separately. A conflict becomes understandable when each address has an observation date and a named geographic role.
- Check aggregation rules. Read whether the ranking rolls majority-owned subsidiaries into a parent, attributes activity to a founding metro, excludes small businesses or limits coverage to particular markets. LinkedIn’s parent-only rule, its 50-employee minimum for Top Startups and StartOut’s founding-metro attribution can materially change the displayed location.
- Grade confidence. Use high confidence when a current first-party address matches a structured record; medium confidence when one strong source exists but another conflict remains unresolved; and low confidence when the only evidence is an undated or secondary listing.
- Publish an audit trail. Preserve the source URLs, access dates, exact fields checked, observation dates, match keys and unresolved discrepancies. A reader should be able to tell whether your statement concerns the ranking’s field or the company’s present-day address.
How to compare two rankings that show different cities
Put the two records side by side and compare the following axes before deciding that one is inaccurate:
| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Location definition | Is the field HQ, region, postal address, legal office, founding metro or workforce geography? | Different geographic objects can legitimately have different city names. |
| Observation date and update cadence | When was each address or score captured, and how often is it refreshed? | A move can appear in one source before another. |
| Parent versus subsidiary treatment | Are subsidiaries listed separately or rolled into a parent? | The ranked entity may not be the operating brand you searched. |
| Source provenance | Did the field come from a current first-party page, filing, user edit or inference? | Evidence quality differs even when the text looks identical. |
| Matching keys | Was the record linked by homepage URL, social URL, name, postal code or foundation date? | Weak keys increase the risk of a similarly named company being attached. |
| Geographic aggregation | Does the system group municipalities into a metro or attribute activity to a founding location? | Aggregation can move activity away from its physical site. |
| What the score measures | Is the ranking about company presence, employees, funding, exits, patents or career outcomes? | A career or funding score is not a direct headquarters measurement. |
Only after those questions are answered should you write that a ranking is wrong. Often the accurate conclusion is narrower: the ranking uses a different field, has not yet incorporated a move, or has intentionally aggregated the company under its parent.
How to write the finding without overstating certainty
Use a field-specific statement
A precise sentence identifies the source and date: “The 2026 list places the parent company in Country X under its parent-level methodology, while the subsidiary’s current contact page lists a headquarters in City Y.” That wording reports two verified facts without pretending they answer the same question.
Separate current from historical addresses
If a filing shows a former headquarters and the company site shows a newer one, call them former and current. Do not erase the historical record; it may explain why an annual ranking still displays the older city.
Best Value
Explain attribution indexes
For a founding-metro index, state that the location is an attribution basis. Do not convert a credited job, patent or company count into a claim that the same activity physically occurred in that metro during the measurement period.
Report unresolved discrepancies
When evidence conflicts and no source has a clear date or field definition, report the conflict and assign medium or low confidence. A transparent qualification is more useful than a definitive but unsupported correction.
Common cases and the right interpretation
The website lists a city different from the ranking
Check whether the website’s address is labelled headquarters, registered office, contact address or an operating site. Then compare its page date with the ranking edition. A current first-party headquarters page that matches a structured record is strong evidence of a changed or stale ranking record; a generic contact address alone is not enough to establish HQ.
Recommended Free Tools
The parent is in one country and the brand operates in another
Determine whether the ranking admits only parent companies. If so, the parent’s country or headquarters can be the expected output, while the brand’s local office remains valid as an operating location. Present both roles rather than calling one false.
The company is remote-first
A distributed workforce can make employee geography diverge sharply from the registered or headquarters address. A workforce-oriented ranking may reflect where professionals are observed, while a company database retains one postal HQ. Neither field should be used as a substitute for the other.
The ranking shows a metro rather than a municipality
Look for a headquarters-region or metro definition. Postal codes and municipal boundaries do not always align with the name used in a regional ranking. Verify the underlying postal code before treating a neighboring-city label as a data error.
The company name appears twice
Use the homepage URL, legal name, country, city, postal code and foundation date to distinguish records. If only a name matches, classify the result as low confidence until another identifier confirms the entity.
A practical publication checklist
- Have you saved the ranking edition, publication date, displayed city and source URL?
- Have you named the geographic field instead of calling every city an HQ?
- Have you confirmed the canonical company and checked for a parent, subsidiary, acquisition or rebrand?
- Have you inspected a current first-party page or filing and recorded its date?
- Have you compared a normalized homepage URL before relying on a name match?
- Have you used country, city, postal code and foundation date to control collisions?
- Have you distinguished current, former, legal and operating addresses?
- Have you checked parent aggregation, founding-metro attribution and eligibility rules?
- Have you stated what the ranking score measures, such as funding, employees or career outcomes?
- Have you assigned a confidence level and preserved unresolved discrepancies in an audit trail?
The most reliable correction is usually not a replacement city. It is a scoped explanation of which location field the ranking used, which entity it scored and how that record compares with the company’s dated first-party evidence.
