SSDs, USB flash drives, and SD cards all use NAND flash, but they are built for different jobs and connect to devices in different ways. That is why an SSD may feel much faster in a computer, while a card or thumb drive can be the right choice for a camera or file handoff. No category has a single guaranteed lifespan: performance and endurance depend on the model, workload, controller, interface, and host.
Why these flash devices perform differently
All three devices combine NAND flash memory with a controller, but their form factors and designs suit different workloads. SSDs are oriented toward higher performance and capacity, USB flash drives toward convenient file carrying, and SD or microSD cards toward compact removable storage in cameras and other devices, according to the SD Association’s comparison. Keith Tsai, the comparison’s author, describes the shared foundation this way: “They are similar in that they are all flash-based products, requiring a controller and NAND flash.”

That common technology does not make the devices interchangeable. An SSD used as a computer’s system drive must handle operating-system activity and many different reads and writes. A USB drive is often used to move files between devices, while an SD card may be asked to capture video continuously in a camera. Controllers, firmware, interfaces, and product priorities vary accordingly.

The slowest part of the storage path sets the practical limit: the flash device, its controller, the port or bus, any reader or adapter, and the host itself. A high-rated card in a slower camera or reader cannot deliver its full potential. The SD Association’s bus-speed overview and Kingston’s Flash Memory Guide both describe why advertised interface capability is not the same as actual transfer performance.

For SD interfaces, the Association lists theoretical bus-mode maxima of 12.5 MB/s for Default Speed, 25 MB/s for High Speed, up to 104 MB/s for UHS-I, up to 312 MB/s for UHS-II half-duplex, and up to 624 MB/s for UHS-III. Its table lists SD Express implementations up to 3,940 MB/s. These are interface figures, not promises that a given card will sustain those rates; actual speed depends on the card and host, and average write speed can vary with the device, operation, and card contents.
Do not compare numbers that describe different kinds of work. A peak sequential read rate, a peak write rate, a guaranteed minimum sequential write rate, and random-access performance are different measures. A headline MB/s figure may describe a maximum under particular conditions, while a speed class is intended to specify a minimum sequential performance under defined conditions. There is no controlled, like-for-like benchmark here comparing matched SSD, USB drive, and SD card models, capacities, hosts, and workloads, so a general claim that one category is a specific number of times faster would be misleading.

How to read SD card speed markings
Markings such as C10, U3, V30, or E300 identify speed classes, not universal maximum transfer speeds. The relevant class expresses assured minimum sequential performance under its specified conditions and compatible bus mode. For video capture, this minimum is often more useful than a vendor’s separate peak-speed claim because recording needs sustained writes. The SD Association explains the distinction in its Speed Class guide and its SD Express class explanation.
For SD Express, the Association specifies minimum sequential performance of 150, 300, 450, and 600 MB/s for Speed Class 150, 300, 450, and 600 respectively, under specified conditions. These are minimum class figures, not peak ratings, and a compatible host is required to realize the relevant performance. A card and host that do not support the same capabilities may not achieve the expected speed even if their markings appear to indicate similar performance.

Before buying a card, check the device manual for supported card formats, bus interface, and required speed class. A faster card may work in a compatible slower host, but it will not make that host operate beyond its limits. Reader and adapter capability matter too. Fragmentation and the way the card is used can also affect write speed.
Why lifespans vary—and what endurance figures mean
NAND flash cells have finite program/erase cycles, but those cycles are not a countdown to a predictable number of years. How long a complete product remains useful depends on its flash, controller and firmware, workload, environment, and how much it is written. The available sources do not establish a neutral, directly comparable lifetime figure for SSDs, USB drives, and SD cards as categories.

Controllers can spread writes through wear leveling and manage unused space through garbage collection. SSD endurance is commonly expressed as TBW, or terabytes written: a model-specific rating for the amount of data written under the manufacturer’s stated terms. It is useful when comparing particular SSDs, but it does not translate directly into a guaranteed service life for every user.
Writes to NAND can exceed the amount a computer reports writing to the device. Kingston’s guide illustrates write amplification with a 2 GB host write that results in 4 GB written to flash, a write amplification factor of 2. That is an example, not a universal factor. The guide also gives product-family examples: Kingston Endurance microSD ratings up to 3,000 program/erase cycles and Industrial card ratings up to 30,000 cycles. Those figures apply to the cited product families, not to all cards or flash devices.

Cycle counts for NAND types such as SLC, MLC, TLC, or QLC should not be treated as a modern product’s guaranteed lifespan. The flash, manufacturing process, controller, model, and workload all affect endurance. For an actual purchase comparison, use the specific product’s published endurance rating and terms rather than extrapolating from a category or cell type.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which type fits each job?
| Device | Good fit | What can limit it | What to check for endurance |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSD | Computer system storage, larger-capacity storage, demanding or frequent-write work | SATA or PCIe/NVMe interface, host controller, workload, or a portable drive’s enclosure and USB bridge | Exact model’s TBW, warranty terms, workload, and controller features |
| USB flash drive | Convenient file carrying and transfer between devices | Drive model, USB generation, port, host controller, and the difference between peak and sustained write speed | Manufacturer’s model-specific rating and expected use; no category-wide lifespan in years is established |
| SD or microSD card | Cameras, phones, drones, dashcams, and other devices with a compatible card slot | Supported card format, card class, bus interface, reader, and host capability | Product-specific endurance designation and workload; choose a suitable endurance model for continual recording |
Choose by workload and host compatibility
- Operating system, applications, or frequent large transfers: choose a compatible SSD and compare the interface and model-specific endurance rating.
- Occasional file handoff: choose a USB flash drive with the connector and USB generation your devices support. A generic transfer drive is not automatically suited to continual logging.
- Camera, drone, or phone storage: confirm the supported SD or microSD format and meet the host’s required speed class. For sustained capture, the class marking is more informative than peak speed alone.
- Dashcam or surveillance recording: select an endurance-rated card that suits the device and recording mode. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement guidance, watch for errors, and keep separate copies of important footage.
- Comparing headline speeds: first identify whether your task depends on sequential writing, burst reads, or random access; then check every link between the host and the storage device.
Removable flash storage is not an archival guarantee. Back up important files somewhere else, regardless of whether they are on an SSD, USB drive, or memory card.
