Pick the original if period-authentic presentation and release-era behavior matter most. Pick the collection if its particular upgrades, included content, or convenience matter more.
What to compare before choosing
Use the same criteria for both versions, then give more weight to the ones that matter to you. A remaster is not automatically a faithful copy with sharper graphics, and a newer version is not automatically the better way to play.

| What matters | Ask yourself | What can change |
|---|---|---|
| Visual and audio presentation | Do you prefer the release-era look and sound, or updated assets and effects? | Lighting, shadows, environments, character models, post-processing, interface, animation, and audio may be revised. |
| Controls and gameplay | Do you want the original movement, aiming, difficulty, and balance? | Developers may adjust weapons, abilities, camera handling, collision, progression, or other systems. |
| Content and features | Would bundled expansions, extra modes, or quality-of-life features change your choice? | A collection may include downloadable content or add features such as unified saves, time trials, or additional playable characters. |
| Fidelity | Is your priority the historical release as it played, or a version that smooths rough edges and standardizes systems? | Some projects build on original assets; others rebuild gameplay or presentation substantially. The label alone does not tell you which. |
| Access | Can you play the original on your current hardware, in your region, with your preferred controls? | Availability and compatibility vary by platform, edition, and region. Check the exact version before buying; current stock and compatibility across all platforms are not established here. |
What the trilogy examples show
These collections illustrate why the practical question is “What changed?” rather than “Is a remaster better?” Their publishers and developers describe the work from their own perspective; those descriptions establish intended changes, not an independent verdict on which edition plays best.

EA says Mass Effect Legendary Edition includes the single-player base games Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, along with over 40 DLC, and supports choices carrying across the trilogy. The “over 40” figure is EA’s product-page claim, accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication year.
#1 Best Overall
- Become Gotham City’s ultimate protector across the iconic Batman: Arkham Trilogy.
- Experience Rocksteady Studios’ critically acclaimed gameplay and AAA original storytelling across all 3 games, PLUS all DLC, in one complete package.
- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription.
BioWare says the edition builds on original assets while updating elements such as shadows, post-processing, character assets, environments, and the interface. It also changed gameplay: EA’s gameplay overview describes adjustments to aiming, weapons, abilities, cover, XP, the Mako, and the Galaxy at War/Readiness system. This makes it a useful example of a collection that retains the trilogy’s story structure while changing both its presentation and play.
BioWare explained its approach this way: “A remaster rather than remake allowed us to build upon the original assets in a way that resembles the polishing phase in a normal development cycle, while also being able to utilize the advantages of much more modern hardware and software.” That is the studio’s description of its development process, not proof that every change is neutral or that the edition is a perfect historical match.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy: familiar level design, rebuilt gameplay
Vicarious Visions described the original code and assets as nearly unusable and called the project “a remaster plus.” Using original level geometry as a guide, the team rebuilt gameplay from scratch, then created new art, animation, and audio. It also added unified checkpoints and saves, menus, and time trials across all three games. A later developer account describes rebuilt levels and updated presentation, online leaderboards, and Coco as playable across the trilogy. See the studio’s Crash N. Sane Trilogy development account.
Vicarious Visions put the distinction plainly: “Using the original level geometry from Naughty Dog as a guide, we rebuilt the Crash gameplay from scratch, capturing its simplicity and precision.” The design may be recognizable while the underlying implementation and some details differ from the original release.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy: a ground-up presentation refresh
Activision’s 2018 announcement describes Spyro Reignited Trilogy as a ground-up remake of Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. It cites improved environments, updated controls, new lighting, recreated cinematics, analog-stick support, and smoother camera handling. Toys for Bob’s Paul Yan said the team aimed to stay true to the originals’ legacy while making the collection feel fresh. That intent helps explain the design goal, but it does not establish that the new presentation or handling is preferable to the originals for every player.
Choose the version that fits your priorities
Choose the remastered collection when
- You prefer the updated presentation in that particular edition.
- Its control or gameplay adjustments sound useful to you rather than like unwanted changes.
- Bundled DLC, added modes, save features, or other included extras make the package more convenient.
- You want to play on hardware where the collection is accessible, after confirming the specific platform and edition.
Choose the originals when
- You want the release-era audiovisual presentation.
- Original balance, controls, or behavior are important to your experience.
- You want to see or play the historical release directly, rather than a revised interpretation.
- The original is available in a version and format you can use.
If you are new to the series
There is no universal winner. Start by checking what the collection changes and includes, then decide whether you want its particular updates or would rather encounter the games as they originally appeared. For Mass Effect, for example, weigh the bundled single-player trilogy and DLC against the documented tuning to combat and other systems. For Crash or Spyro, consider how much you value their refreshed presentation and added or updated features relative to the original releases.
