Xbox Cloud Gaming runs eligible games on Xbox server hardware in a Microsoft Azure datacenter and streams the session to your device. You don’t install or run the streamed game locally; you need a supported device, a supported game and access method, and a reliable internet connection. An Xbox console is not required.
What is Xbox Cloud Gaming, and where does the game run?
Microsoft says Xbox Game Streaming runs the game on an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter. Your device receives the streamed game and sends your controls back. That means you can play without installing the streamed title or owning the hardware that runs it, but you do need a network connection and a game that is eligible to stream. Microsoft’s game-streaming overview explains the distinction.

Cloud Gaming is different from Xbox Remote Play. With Cloud Gaming, the game runs on Microsoft’s server; with Remote Play, it runs on your own Xbox console and streams from there to your client device. The two features therefore require different hardware at the game-running end, and their performance depends on different network paths. Microsoft describes those endpoints but does not establish that one mode will be faster in every home.

Streaming can also differ from local play in areas such as resolution, audio output, cloud-save storage, companion-app support, and peripheral support. Check the details for the specific game and device if one of those features matters to you.

What do you need to use it?
Access depends on several things at once: the game, plan or free-to-play eligibility, region, device, and input method. Xbox lists Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate for cloud gaming, as well as select free-to-play games accessible with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Some games a player owns or buys can also be streamed, but not every Game Pass or purchased Xbox game is cloud-enabled. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming page and catalog for the game and region you care about.
- Supported access: an eligible plan or a supported free-to-play game and Microsoft account, as applicable.
- Supported device and software: compatibility depends on the exact device, operating system, app or browser, and region.
- Input: usually a compatible controller, though some games support touch controls or mouse and keyboard on compatible devices.
- Internet: a stable connection matters, not just the headline download-speed number.
Plan hours changing in November 2026
As of October 4, 2026, Xbox’s announced monthly included cloud playtime limits are upcoming, not yet in effect: beginning in November 2026, Essential is set to include five hours, Premium ten hours, and Ultimate fifteen hours. Xbox said users would be able to purchase additional cloud hours, but its September 3 announcement did not yet specify their price or all market and implementation details. It also announced an option beginning in November for people without Game Pass to purchase cloud hours and stream eligible games they own; availability should not be assumed to be universal. See Xbox’s September 3, 2026 announcement for updates.

Which devices can you use?
Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA OS smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and selected Meta Quest headsets. These are categories, not a guarantee that every model or software version works. Xbox’s current compatibility information is the place to check a specific model before relying on it.

It described Steam Deck access as beta at that time, so do not assume it has the same standard app setup as other listed devices.

How do you start a cloud game?
- Confirm access: check that your region, plan or free-to-play access, and chosen title are eligible for Cloud Gaming.
- Choose a supported client: use the Xbox app where available, or a supported browser and go to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in: use the Microsoft account associated with your eligible access.
- Connect an input method: pair or plug in a compatible controller if the title requires one, or use supported touch or mouse-and-keyboard controls where offered.
- Select the cloud-enabled game: availability varies by title, plan, region, and platform; start the stream from the game’s cloud-play option.
Do you need a controller?
Most games use a gamepad, but a separate controller purchase is not automatically necessary. Xbox supports compatible controllers connected over Bluetooth or USB; selected games provide touch controls, and Xbox’s getting-started guide says many games support mouse and keyboard on compatible devices. Which inputs work depends on both the title and client. Check the game’s listed controls and your device’s compatibility before buying anything.
What internet connection is recommended?
Xbox lists 10 Mbps download as a minimum, recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Its published best-performance figures are 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets. These are guidance, not a promise of a particular resolution, frame rate, or latency. The service also depends on your location, device, and other factors. Xbox’s requirements page has the current guidance.

Xbox Wire’s December 2025 guide recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection and suggests wired Ethernet when possible, with 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 5G as wireless alternatives. A fast connection can still perform poorly if it is unstable or the route to the service is unfavorable. If play stutters, try moving closer to the Wi-Fi router, switching to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet where available, and reducing competing network use; then check that your device and browser are supported.

Can you stream games you own?
Yes, for selected titles. Xbox’s Stream Your Own Game feature lets players stream certain games they own or buy, subject to cloud-play eligibility. It does not make every purchased game streamable, and the supported list changes. Check the current cloud catalog rather than relying on the launch list in Xbox’s November 20, 2024 announcement, which describes the feature but is historical.
