Look for evidence that an employer identifies the hazards of the actual work, prepares people before they encounter those hazards, checks that they can do safety-critical tasks, and acts on concerns and incidents. A polished safety statement alone cannot show whether those practices reach a particular role or site.
The questions below help engineering applicants and employees assess a program in an interview or on the job. The legal duties that apply depend on jurisdiction, industry, worksite, and assigned tasks; this is a practical evaluation guide, not a compliance audit.

Start with the hazards of the actual role
Engineering work can involve very different risks depending on the discipline, equipment, materials, location, and task. Ask the employer to describe the hazards connected to the position and how they are assessed before work begins. A useful answer should relate to the work you would actually do, rather than rely only on a general safety slogan or policy.

For work involving hazardous chemicals, for example, OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard addresses labels, safety data sheets, and employee information and training. The specific requirements depend on whether the standard covers the work and exposure: OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.

Check when training happens and what it covers
Ask what preparation you must complete before being assigned a task or exposed to a hazard. Training is more convincing when it is tailored to the role and workplace, explains relevant hazards and protective measures, and is updated when procedures or conditions change. Workers should also have access to instructions and a way to ask questions.
OSHA’s rules illustrate why timing and coverage should be checked against the specific hazard. Under its construction confined-space standard, covered employees must receive training at no cost, in a language and vocabulary they understand, before their initial assignment under the standard. That requirement is specific to covered confined-space work; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every engineering task: OSHA construction confined-space training requirements.

Find out how the employer checks competence
A course assignment or completion record shows that training was logged, not necessarily that someone can perform a safety-critical task. Ask how the employer checks understanding and practical skill. Depending on the work, useful checks might include a demonstration, practical exercise, questions, or observation of the task.

OSHA’s construction confined-space standard requires training sufficient for covered employees to acquire the understanding, knowledge, and skills needed to perform their duties safely. OSHA’s process-safety construction guidance also recommends clear, measurable training objectives and periodic evaluation of whether workers understand and apply the relevant skills and routines. When evaluation finds a gap, that guidance recommends considering revision, retraining, or more frequent refreshers: OSHA process-safety training guidance.

Look for worker involvement and follow-through
Workers need a practical way to raise hazards, near misses, and concerns—and to learn what happened after reporting them. Ask how employees report issues, who reviews them, and how the employer communicates corrective actions. A concrete example of a change made after a worker report can help show whether the process leads to action.
OSHA’s recommended safety and health program practices treat worker participation as a core element, alongside management leadership, hazard identification and control, training, and program evaluation. These are recommended practices, not a claim that OSHA requires every employer to use one identical written program: OSHA recommended practices for safety and health programs.

Check how shared worksites are coordinated
If contractors or multiple employers share a site, find out who communicates site hazards, protective measures, and emergency procedures, and how responsibilities are divided. For covered hazardous-chemical exposures, OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard requires coordination methods in the written program when employees of another employer may be exposed. Ask how that coordination works in the setting you would enter; don’t assume a general orientation covers every site-specific hazard.

Ask how incidents, near misses, inspections, and worker concerns lead to corrective action, and how managers check whether a fix worked. Follow-through matters: a recorded concern without an assigned response or review gives little evidence that the underlying risk has been addressed.

OSHA recommends evaluating a safety and health program initially and at least annually, while noting that the evaluation’s scope and frequency depend on applicable standards, program maturity and complexity, and hazards. Examples of useful indicators include completion of required training, reported hazards and near misses, and timely completion of corrective actions: OSHA program evaluation guidance.

- What are the main hazards for this role, and how are they assessed before work starts?
- What training will I complete before doing this task or entering this site?
- How do you check that someone can perform a safety-critical task safely?
- How do employees report hazards or near misses, and how are they told about corrective actions?
- How do you communicate site hazards and emergency procedures when contractors or other employers share the worksite?
- Can you give an example of a change made after an incident, near miss, or worker report?
Compare employers on the same evidence
If you are weighing multiple offers, use the same dimensions for each conversation. This comparison is a practical way to organize your observations, not an OSHA scoring rubric.
| Dimension | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Hazard fit | Explanations tied to the role, site, equipment, materials, and tasks. |
| Timing and access | Relevant preparation before assignment or exposure, with accessible instructions and a way to ask questions. |
| Competence | A suitable check of understanding and safe performance when the work requires it. |
| Worker voice | A workable route for raising concerns and communication about how they are handled. |
| Controls | A clear explanation of the measures used to prevent exposure and workers’ responsibilities in using them. |
| Learning | Corrective actions after findings or reports, plus a review of whether they worked. |
| Coordination | Clear hazard communication and responsibilities across teams, sites, and contractors. |
Keep the legal context in view
OSHA’s general-industry compliance resource says a comprehensive safety and health program is not universally required as a single program by OSHA, while describing such programs as an effective way to comply with standards and prevent injuries and illness: OSHA Safety and Health Program Quick Start Guide. Individual standards can impose specific duties for covered hazards and workers. Federal OSHA material does not settle every state-plan or non-U.S. obligation, and the examples here do not cover every engineering safety requirement.

An employer should be able to explain its procedures and training for the work you will perform. Missing details in an interview are a reason to ask for clarification, not by themselves proof of a legal violation.
