Why Sports Games Can Keep Selling When Video-Game Spending Slows

Sports games can remain near the top of sales charts even when spending on games weakens because a small group of annual franchises captures a disproportionate share of demand, familiar brands reduce the risk of buying a new release, and live services keep generating money after launch. That resilience is relative, not universal: a sports title can be a hit while the sports genre declines, and the genre can decline while the wider games market grows.

The clearest recent example is the United States in 2025. Sports-game sales fell 8% from their record 2024 level, yet total video-game sales rose 1% to $60.7 billion. NBA 2K26 still ranked second among all games and first among sports games. The result is best understood as concentrated strength inside a softer category, not proof that sports games are immune to downturns.

What the latest numbers actually show

Year, geography and measurement matter before any explanation begins. The figures below are Circana’s U.S. full-year 2025 results as reported by Sports Business Journal on January 30, 2026.

Measure 2025 result Change or ranking What it means
Sports-game genre sales Not stated as a dollar total Down 8% from 2024’s record The category weakened after an unusually strong prior year.
Total U.S. video-game sales $60.7 billion Up 1% from 2024 The overall market grew slightly while sports games declined.
NBA 2K26 Full-game sales ranking No. 2 among all games; No. 1 among sports games A leading sports release can outperform a declining genre.

The comparison with 2024 is unusually difficult because EA Sports College Football returned that year and created a major sales spike. A high base makes a subsequent percentage decline look larger even when the newer year contains a strong individual release. Bundled editions also affect the chart. Circana executive director Mat Piscatella warned that “Particularly because of these editions, it’s exceptionally difficult to really take away anything of note from the ranked placements of the individual games, as the bundles are reported separately.”

These are U.S. calendar-year results. They should not be presented as a global measure, a forecast for every country, or evidence that every sports title grew.

Why a few franchises can stay strong

Sales are concentrated in established properties

Publisher disclosures point to an industry in which a large share of sales is concentrated in popular games. Electronic Arts identifies EA SPORTS FC, College Football and Madden NFL as significant franchises and says its annualized global football game is consistently one of the market’s best sellers. When a category is dominated by a handful of recognizable series, those series can hold high chart positions even if smaller releases lose buyers.

Concentration changes the meaning of an average. If one or two major launches sell exceptionally well while many lesser-known titles struggle, the genre may look healthy at the top and weak underneath. A decline in total sports-game spending therefore does not contradict a blockbuster’s success; both can be true at the same time.

Annual releases lower the purchase decision’s uncertainty

Annualized sports franchises give publishers a repeatable release cycle and give players a known product family. EA describes established consumer bases and brand recognition as advantages when iterating on existing games. Buyers generally know the sport, controls and modes they will receive, so the decision is less speculative than choosing an entirely new property.

This does not establish that every fan buys every edition. It explains why an established series can retain a dependable audience when households become more selective. A familiar name, current teams and an active online community can make the latest edition one of the few purchases that survives a tighter entertainment budget.

Real-world seasons provide a recurring release occasion

Sports themselves change continuously: leagues move into new seasons, rosters change and championships create fresh storylines. Annual games can use that calendar as a natural reason to ship an update. The available sales data does not isolate roster changes as the cause of a purchase, so this is context rather than a measured consumer motive. It does, however, explain why sports publishers have a recurring marketing moment that many other genres lack.

How revenue continues after the initial sale

A full-game purchase is only one part of a large sports franchise’s business. EA defines live services as extra content, subscriptions, licensing and advertising. In fiscal 2026, EA reported $5.383 billion in live-services and other net revenue across the company, with its global football and American-football franchises among the drivers.

That figure is company-wide, not sports-only, and it is not a count of copies sold. It can include spending by people who bought an earlier edition, a current edition or a free-to-start product. The distinction matters because live-service revenue can rise while new-game unit sales fall, or decline even when a new release performs well.

Measure What it captures What it cannot prove
Full-game sales or dollar sales Revenue associated with the purchase of the game itself, as defined by the reporting source How much players later spend on add-ons or how many active players remain
Live-services and other net revenue Extra content, subscriptions, licensing and advertising, often across multiple franchises Sports-game copies sold or spending by a single title
Net bookings A publisher’s reported measure of bookings over a period A universal industry sales total or a direct measure of profit

EA said Madden NFL franchise net bookings rose 6% year over year in fiscal 2024, calling it a record, while weekly average users grew by double digits for Madden NFL 24 and Madden Mobile. Those are publisher-reported results, not an independent estimate of the entire sports market. They demonstrate how a large installed audience and continuing engagement can support a franchise beyond launch week.

How NBA 2K26 illustrates the pattern

NBA 2K26 ranked No. 2 among all U.S. games in 2025 and No. 1 among sports games even though the sports genre was down 8% from its 2024 record. Circana’s Piscatella said sales grew significantly compared with 2024 and that 2025 was NBA 2K’s biggest year for franchise full-game dollar sales since 2020; he ranked 2025 second in the franchise’s U.S. history behind 2020.

The example answers a common confusion: a genre’s year-over-year decline is an aggregate result, while a chart position describes one title relative to other titles. NBA 2K26 could gain sales, or gain enough share to improve its position, while other sports releases lost more ground. The two measurements are not interchangeable.

Bundles make the ranking still harder to interpret. If a package containing multiple editions is reported separately from a standalone edition, the chart may divide demand that consumers view as one purchase. A ranking is therefore useful for identifying prominent releases, but insufficient for calculating a franchise’s total audience or comparing editions without checking how bundles were counted.

Why “people are spending less” can be misleading

Total market, genre and title are different layers

“Game spending” can mean the entire market, a genre, a publisher, a particular release or post-launch transactions. In the 2025 U.S. data, the total market rose 1%, sports games fell 8%, and NBA 2K26 placed second overall. Any explanation that collapses those layers will produce a false contradiction.

Full-game revenue and ongoing revenue move independently

A publisher may report lower full-game revenue for one annual edition but higher spending on extra content, or the reverse. EA’s fiscal 2026 disclosures show this divergence: global-football extra-content sales were higher, while Madden NFL Ultimate Team sales were lower. The figures describe different streams and should not be combined into a single claim that a franchise is simply “up” or “down.”

A record year creates a demanding comparison

The 2024 return of EA Sports College Football lifted the sports category to a record. Comparing 2025 with that exceptional year naturally produces a decline, even if 2025 contained a strong NBA 2K release and other successful titles. Analysts need to ask whether the prior year was normal before treating a percentage change as a lasting trend.

What this does—and does not—say about buyers

The evidence supports explanations based on market structure, release cadence and monetization. It does not prove one universal reason an individual buys a sports game. A player may value a current roster, online competition, a favorite league or simply the familiarity of the series; the cited market and company disclosures do not measure those motives separately.

It is also unsafe to say sports games “always” sell well. EA’s fiscal 2026 report recorded year-over-year declines in College Football and EA SPORTS FC full-game revenue even as Battlefield 6 contributed to higher overall full-game revenue. Annual franchises vary by edition, platform, competition and launch timing.

A practical way to evaluate a claim about sports-game resilience

  1. Define the geography and period. State whether the number covers the U.S. or another market and whether it is a calendar or fiscal year.
  2. Name the level being measured. Distinguish total games, the sports genre, a publisher, a franchise and an individual title.
  3. Identify the revenue type. Label full-game sales, net bookings, live services, subscriptions, licensing and advertising separately.
  4. Check the comparison year. Look for unusual launches such as the 2024 return of EA Sports College Football that may have raised the baseline.
  5. Inspect bundle treatment. Determine whether editions and packages were reported together or separately before drawing conclusions from chart positions.
  6. Separate observation from interpretation. A high ranking is an observation; franchise familiarity, annual timing and ongoing services are explanations that fit the business model but do not prove every consumer’s motive.

The bottom line for the 2025 example

Sports games can keep selling well during a period of selective or slowing spending because a few established annual franchises concentrate demand, recognizable brands make each new edition easier to choose, and live services extend monetization beyond the initial purchase. The U.S. 2025 figures show the limits of that resilience: sports-game sales fell 8% from a record 2024, while the overall market grew 1% to $60.7 billion, yet NBA 2K26 still finished second overall. The accurate conclusion is not that sports games are recession-proof; it is that leading franchises can remain commercially powerful even when their broader category softens.
