Proton lets many Windows games run on the Steam Deck’s Linux-based SteamOS, but it does not make every game or its supporting software automatically compatible. A crash tells you what happened, not which layer caused it. Start with reversible software checks, then test a different Proton version for that game only if needed.
How Proton works on Steam Deck
Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which is based on Linux. Proton is a compatibility tool in the Steam Client that lets games made for Windows run on Linux. Valve describes it as using Wine and additional components; its developer documentation also discusses graphics API implementations that help translate what games expect from Windows and graphics software.

Proton is not a virtual machine, and games do not all follow an identical path through it. A game may depend on middleware, a launcher, or anti-cheat software as well as its main executable. Those parts can have their own compatibility issues, so a game that starts successfully may still fail later or behave unexpectedly. Valve’s Proton repository and Steamworks Proton documentation explain the tool and the developer-side compatibility considerations.
Why does my Steam Deck keep crashing in games?
There is no single cause established for every Steam Deck game crash. Possible areas to check include the game’s Proton compatibility, its middleware or anti-cheat, a recent game update, SteamOS or Steam Client software, third-party applications, and graphics settings. These are diagnostic possibilities, not a diagnosis of any particular title.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
First determine whether the problem is isolated to one game. If several games crash or the whole device is unstable, begin with SteamOS updates, a restart, and temporarily exiting third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode. If one title is affected, check that game’s compatibility information and test its settings separately. Valve’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guide recommends software checks before escalating.
What does Steam Deck Verified mean?
Valve assigns one of four compatibility labels. They describe the results of Valve’s review, not a guarantee that a game will never encounter a bug. Check the Store page’s Deck Compatibility section for the specific requirements a game does or does not meet.

| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Verified | Works great on Deck by default, without extra modification. |
| Playable | Works, but may require user configuration—for example, changing controls or using a mouse or touchscreen in a launcher. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently does not consider the game playable on Deck. |
| Unknown | Valve has not tested the game and does not have compatibility information. It does not mean the game is confirmed broken. |
Compatibility information can change as games, SteamOS, and the Deck evolve. A Verified rating is useful evidence about the reviewed experience, not immunity from crashes. Valve explains the labels in its Steam Deck Verified program overview.

How to troubleshoot a crashing Steam game
Work through these checks in order, changing one thing at a time so you can tell whether it made a difference.
Rank #3
- Operating System: SteamOS 3.0
- Install updates and restart. Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install available updates, and restart the Deck.
- Temporarily remove third-party applications from the test. Exit or disable applications installed through Desktop Mode, then launch the game again.
- Review the game’s compatibility details. Check its Store page for its Deck label and any unmet requirements. Treat Unknown as untested by Valve, not as a finding that the game cannot run.
- Test Proton for that game. In the Library, highlight the game and open Menu > Properties > Compatibility. Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then try the latest Proton version offered by Steam. Valve notes that forcing this option may cause Steam to download the Windows version if only the Linux build is installed.
- Retest before changing anything else. Compare the same game and situation with the default setting and the forced Proton version. If the crash persists or gets worse, restore the default. Proton changes are reversible per-game experiments, not guaranteed fixes.
- Reduce graphics settings. Try a lower graphics preset or adjust individual settings, then check whether the crash changes.
- Escalate persistent problems. Use Valve’s Steam Deck support route or the bug-reporting channels in its troubleshooting guide. Avoid treating a single game crash as a reason to begin with a factory reset, re-image, or hardware disassembly.
Should I force a different Proton version?
It is reasonable to try the latest Valve-provided Proton version for an affected game, following the steps above. Keep the comparison controlled: test the default, force a version, and observe whether the same symptom changes. If it does not help, switch back rather than cycling through settings without a clear reason.
There is no Proton release that can be recommended as the universal fix for all crashing games. A useful choice depends on the title and current compatibility evidence. Valve recommends Steam Client-provided Proton versions for most users; installing a community Proton fork is not a necessary first step. Do not assume anti-cheat is responsible unless there is evidence specific to the game and mode.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
When the basic checks do not resolve it
If instability affects the system or multiple games, continue to prioritize system updates, a restart, and a test without Desktop Mode applications. For a persistent issue limited to one title, report it to Valve through the support route and include the game name, when the crash occurs, and what you already tried. Steam Support also notes that users may opt into the Steam Deck Beta to see whether Valve has shipped a relevant change; beta enrollment is an option to investigate, not a promised fix.
