How to Share a Google Maps List or Place with Someone

Learn how to share a Google Maps place or saved list, choose view or edit access, and check list privacy settings.

To share one place, open it in Google Maps on a computer and use its Share control. To share a saved collection, open the list and send a viewing link—or invite someone to edit it if you want them to contribute. The paths and labels differ between desktop and mobile.

Choose what you want to share

What you’re sharing Recipient’s role Use
One place or map location Open the location On a computer, use the location’s Share control.
A saved list View only Send a link to view the list.
A saved list Contribute or edit Invite collaborators or use the list’s Invite to edit option.

A shared list is different from a shared map. Google says Maps cannot share a map containing saved locations as a map; share the saved list instead.

Share a saved list from a computer

  1. Open Google Maps and select Menu > Saved.
  2. Select More beside the list.
  3. Choose Send a link to view, then share the link using an available app or method.

Let someone edit the list

Open the list’s More menu, choose Invite to edit, get the link, and send it to the people you want to collaborate with. To end edit access, open Sharing options and turn off Let others edit your list.

Set who can find the list

In Sharing options, Private means only the owner can find the list. Shared means anyone with the link can find it. Google’s desktop instructions say starred places cannot be shared through this list-sharing workflow.

Share a saved list on Android

  1. In the Google Maps app, tap You > Your lists.
  2. Open the list and tap Share to send a viewing link.
  3. If the recipient should contribute, tap Invite collaborators instead.

To remove edit access, open the list’s Sharing options and turn off Let others edit this list. Labels can vary by app version; see Google’s Android list instructions.

Share a saved list on iPhone or iPad

  1. In Google Maps, tap Saved and scroll to Your lists.
  2. Tap More beside the list, then Share list.
  3. To let someone contribute, choose Invite collaborators instead.

To remove edit access, open Sharing options and turn off Let others edit your list. See Google’s iPhone and iPad list instructions if the labels differ in your app.

Share one place or location

On a computer, search for a place or select it on the map, then use the place’s Share control to copy a link or choose an offered sharing method. For a map location, Google also documents Menu > Share or embed map. These options share a place or location, not a saved list. Google’s computer instructions for sharing a map or location describe the desktop workflow. The current Android and iPhone/iPad steps for sharing one individual place are not established here, so check the place card’s controls in your app rather than relying on an assumed tap sequence.

Privacy to check before sharing

A link that lets someone view a list is not the same as an invitation to edit it. Choose the viewing link for read access and the collaborator invitation when you want the recipient to help maintain the list. Google also warns that list viewers may see the names and profile pictures of people who joined, as well as who added or edited places and notes. Review Sharing options before sending a list if that visibility matters.
