But not every Game Boy is expensive, and a special-edition label alone does not prove that a particular unit is rare or valuable. To judge a system fairly, identify its exact model and condition, then compare recent completed sales of similar examples—not just asking prices.
Why do some Game Boy systems attract collector prices?
Collectors may seek particular models or editions, especially when nostalgia and demand overlap with limited availability. Nintendo’s official history records special editions across the Game Boy family, but an edition name or unusual appearance is a reason to verify the exact item—not evidence by itself that it is scarce or expensive. Nintendo’s Game Boy history provides product-family context.

The system’s reach helps explain its lasting cultural presence, not today’s resale value. Nintendo says the Game Boy sold over 100 million units and had a catalogue of over 450 games; the page does not state the year for those figures. They do not show how many units survive, how many buyers want a given model now, or what one sells for today. Nintendo’s history page describes the system as having sold “over 100 million units.”

Value depends on the item being sold and the evidence for comparable sales. A console and a game are separate markets: a scarce or complete game does not establish the value of the handheld it runs on. Collector guidance from the Game Boy Museum recommends checking recent completed sales for the exact title and condition; apply the same comparison discipline to consoles, without treating game-specific observations as proof of a console premium. Game Boy Museum’s valuation guidance is collector advice, not a formal pricing standard.
#1 Best Overall
- It features a more powerful processor than any previous portable system, for faster, smoother gameplay
- The high-resolution, full color screen makes the game jump out at you -- 50% bigger than Game Boy Color
- Two new buttons, L & R, bring you more control & game options
- Extended battery life lets you play for up to 15 hours on a pair of AA batteries
- Compact Game Paks let you store your game progress & are smaller then Game Boy Color Paks
- Exact model or title: Distinguish an original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance model rather than comparing them as one product.
- Working state and wear: Compare examples with similar tested functionality and visible condition. A listing title alone does not establish that a unit was tested.
- Completeness: Note whether the item is the handheld alone or includes packaging, manuals, and accessories. The cited collector guidance discusses completeness for games, so do not assume it establishes a quantified console premium.
- Edition and scarcity: Verify the precise edition and look for comparable completed sales; do not rely on a seller’s rarity claim.
- Sale evidence: Prefer multiple recent completed sales for a close match over asking prices or a one-off record sale. Prices move, and a different model, condition, or bundle can make a comparison misleading.
Which Game Boy model fits the games you want to play?
Collector value is only one part of a purchase. If you want to play cartridges, check compatibility for the exact game and handheld before buying. Nintendo’s support guidance lists original Game Boy cartridges as compatible with the original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Super Game Boy. Compatibility differs for other cartridge categories, so do not assume every game works on every system. Nintendo’s compatibility guide breaks this down by cartridge and system.
Generation differences also matter to how you intend to use the handheld. Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance history provides context for that generation’s hardware. Treat a special edition as a detail to verify, not as a guarantee of higher value; Nintendo’s history records special Game Boy Advance editions as well.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you check whether a listing is fairly priced?
- Identify the exact handheld. Confirm its model and, where relevant, edition. Do not base a comparison on a broad label such as “Game Boy.”
- Check the intended cartridge. Use Nintendo’s model-specific compatibility information if you are buying to play a particular game.
- Assess condition and inclusions. Record whether it is tested and working, its visible wear, and whether packaging or accessories are included.
- Compare completed sales. Look for recent sales of the same model and a similar condition and bundle. Asking prices show what sellers hope to receive, not what buyers have paid.
- Discount weak comparisons. Treat a single record sale, an unverified rarity claim, or a sale for a different model as insufficient evidence on its own.
No reliable current, model-by-model sale series is established here, so a universal price range would be misleading. Use recent completed sales for the exact model and condition in your market; the evidence should be dated and comparable, including what was bundled with the unit.
