Most smart-home devices do not need a dedicated Ethernet run if the exact model supports Wi-Fi, Thread, or another wireless connection and the signal is reliable where you plan to install it. Smart plugs, bulbs and some cameras can work this way—but a hub may still need a cable, and a camera’s upload needs can make weak Wi-Fi a poor fit.
Five smart-home device types that can often work without Ethernet
These are categories to consider, not a verified shortlist of specific products. Check the manufacturer’s network requirements for the exact model before buying: a category name or smart-home standard does not guarantee that every device connects wirelessly.

1. Wi-Fi smart plugs
A Wi-Fi smart plug can connect directly to your home network, so it may not need a separate Ethernet cable or hub. Confirm the plug’s supported Wi-Fi band and setup requirements, and check that it works with the smart-home platform you use. The Wi-Fi connection does not remove the need for a nearby power outlet.

A bulb that connects over Wi-Fi or Thread can avoid its own Ethernet run. But some lighting systems use a separate bridge or hub, and that component may have different network requirements from the bulbs. Check whether the specific setup needs a hub and how the hub connects before assuming the whole system is cable-free.

3. Wireless lighting controls
Wireless controls can communicate with lights without an Ethernet cable at each control. Lutron says its Caséta controls use Clear Connect wireless technology, but the Smart Hub is a wired exception: Lutron support says, “The Caséta hub does not connect to your home network via wifi.” The hub must connect directly to the router using the supplied Ethernet cable. Lutron support explains the Caséta hub’s connection requirement.
4. Direct-to-Wi-Fi security cameras
Some cameras connect directly to Wi-Fi rather than using an Ethernet-connected base station. That can spare you a cable run to the camera, but it does not make every camera wireless, nor does it guarantee dependable video. Arlo says its direct-to-Wi-Fi cameras require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; its requirements page also lists 1 Mbps upload per camera for other Arlo cameras, so check whether that figure applies to the exact model. Arlo warns that low upstream bandwidth can reduce video quality or delay the start of a live stream. Check Arlo’s model-specific minimum requirements.

- 【Easy Setup, One Control】With Matter, Skip the step of downloading and registering multiple manufacturers' apps every time you buy a new device. Instead, head straight to certified smart home platforms like Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, or AiDot to control all your Matter devices.【TIP】Matter-certified hub or controller (HomePod, Echo Dot, Nest, SmartThings Hub) is required for Apple Home/Alexa/Google Home/SmartThings platforms. Alternatively, the AiDot app can be used without hub
- 【Offline-Ready Control】Once you've set up your Matter-certified devices on your LAN, they'll be able to communicate with each other directly, using the Matter protocol. This means that if your home internet connection goes offline, your Matter-certified devices will still be able to communicate and be controlled within your LAN, without relying on the internet or cloud services.
- 【Remote Control from Anywhere】Use the app to turn electronics on before you arrive home and off after you leave, no matter where you are. Using the smart plug that work with alexa manage your power usage and save money.
- 【Hands-free Voice Control】Control linkind homekit plug using simple voice commands through Apple HomeKit, Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings, without the need for physical input such as buttons or switches.
- 【Flexible Scheduling & Timer】Effortlessly reduce energy usage with automatic device shutdown after a set time. For example Chrismas Tree, TV, Lamp, Fan, Humidifier,Blenders, Lightbulbs
5. Matter devices using Wi-Fi or Thread
Matter does not mean “Ethernet required.” Google’s Matter guidance says Matter devices can communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread. The label alone does not tell you which transport a particular product uses, whether it needs a separate hub, or how that hub connects. Check the product’s specifications and the requirements for its controller or border router. Google explains the network options for Matter.

Wireless is a reasonable choice when the device supports it, the network reaches its installation point reliably, and the connection can handle the device’s use. For a plug or bulb, the main questions are whether its required band is available and whether setup succeeds at the intended location. For a camera, also consider upstream bandwidth, because video has to travel from your home to the service or app.

- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Wi-Fi performance can change as conditions change. Google notes that connected clients compete for bandwidth and that nearby wireless routers can interfere. A device that connects during setup may still be unreliable if its location has a weak signal or the network becomes congested. Google describes how connected devices and nearby routers can affect Wi-Fi.
Check these details before skipping the cable
- Exact connection type: Verify whether the model uses Wi-Fi, Thread, a proprietary wireless protocol, Ethernet or more than one option. Matter support alone does not answer this.
- Hub or bridge: Look for a separate component and confirm whether it connects to the router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Band and signal: Check the required Wi-Fi band and test signal at the intended installation point, not just beside the router. Blink, for example, specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for its devices and recommends checking signal strength in its app.
- Bandwidth: For cameras, use the exact manufacturer’s upload guidance for the model. Blink lists a minimum upload speed of 2 Mbit/sec for its devices; that is Blink-specific guidance, not a universal threshold. Blink lists its network requirements.
- Power: A wireless connection still needs a power source. If a device uses Power over Ethernet (PoE), one Ethernet cable can carry both power and data, which may be useful where Wi-Fi or a separate power supply is unsuitable. TP-Link explains PoE and its equipment requirements.
When Ethernet is worth the effort
A hub requires a wired router connection
A wireless bulb or control does not make its whole system cable-free if its hub needs Ethernet. Check the hub’s requirements separately from those of the endpoint devices.

Wi-Fi coverage or reliability is inadequate
If a device repeatedly loses connection, has a weak signal at its installed location, or struggles on a congested network, Ethernet may provide a more reliable link where the product supports it. For mesh systems, a wired backhaul can also connect compatible network units. Google documents Ethernet backhaul for supported Nest Wifi and Google Wifi models, but Nest Wifi points do not have Ethernet ports, so the option depends on the exact equipment. Google lists wired-backhaul support and limitations for its mesh products.
The device needs PoE
For compatible equipment, PoE can deliver both network data and power over one cable. It is not a general advantage of Ethernet for every smart-home device: the device and network hardware must support compatible PoE specifications. TP-Link advises choosing a PoE switch based on port count, speed, PoE type and power budget.

Bottom line: decide by model and location
Smart plugs, wireless bulbs and controls, direct-to-Wi-Fi cameras, and some Matter devices can often avoid an Ethernet run. The exceptions matter: hubs may need wired connections, cameras may need stronger Wi-Fi and upload capacity, and Ethernet can help with backhaul, reliability or PoE. Check the exact model’s requirements and the network at the place it will live before leaving the cable out.
