The GoPro HERO9 Black has motion-related features, but they do different jobs: HyperSmooth stabilizes video while you record, and a separate GoPro Labs feature can use the camera’s accelerometer and/or gyroscope to start or stop capture when it detects movement. HyperSmooth is not a motion-trigger recording mode.
What does motion sensing do on the HERO9 Black?
GoPro’s documented motion-trigger feature is part of GoPro Labs, a special firmware program. GoPro describes using the camera’s accelerometer and/or gyroscope to start or stop capture only when the camera is in motion. That can help avoid recording while the camera is still, preserving storage and battery.

This is separate from the standard video stabilization controls. GoPro’s cited Labs announcement does not specify motion thresholds, sensor measurement range, sampling rate, or operating limits, so those details should not be assumed.
How HyperSmooth stabilization works
HyperSmooth is the HERO9 Black’s video stabilization feature. GoPro says it corrects camera shake and crops the footage during recording to leave room for stabilization. The trade-off is straightforward: stronger stabilization can mean a tighter crop and a narrower view.

GoPro’s HERO9 Black user manual lists these four settings. In practice, select a mode by balancing how much camera movement you expect against how much of the scene you want to keep in frame.
How horizon leveling and the Max Lens Mod fit in
GoPro introduced the HERO9 Black with HyperSmooth 3.0 and in-camera horizon leveling. These are related stabilization capabilities, but they do not establish the precise model or specifications of the camera’s motion sensors.

The optional Max Lens Mod is documented as compatible with the HERO9 Black. GoPro describes it as providing Max HyperSmooth, an ultra-wide Max SuperView field of view, and horizon lock that holds the horizon level even when the camera rotates through 360 degrees. It is relevant if those extra lens and horizon-lock capabilities are what you need; it is not required for the distinction between HyperSmooth and Labs motion triggers.

- For smoother footage while recording: Use HyperSmooth and choose Boost, High, or On based on the stabilization-versus-crop trade-off.
- For automatic recording based on movement: Look to GoPro Labs motion triggers, not HyperSmooth. The cited Labs announcement documents movement-based start/stop capture but does not provide trigger thresholds or detailed operating limits.
- For a level horizon during camera rotation: The HERO9 Black has in-camera horizon leveling; the optional Max Lens Mod adds the documented 360-degree horizon-lock capability.
What GoPro’s documentation does not establish
The cited official sources identify the accelerometer and gyroscope as sensor types used by Labs motion triggers, but do not identify the HERO9 Black’s exact sensor components or provide their technical specifications. They also do not establish that every firmware version exposes identical motion-trigger behavior. Avoid treating stabilization, horizon leveling, or a Labs feature description as a hardware specification.

GoPro announced the HERO9 Black on September 16, 2020 with HyperSmooth 3.0 and in-camera horizon leveling. Its January 13, 2021 GoPro Labs announcement describes the motion-trigger feature, while its HERO9 Black launch announcement covers the camera and Max Lens Mod capabilities. GoPro’s HyperSmooth guidance recommends Boost for bouncy situations.
