I replaced my Apple Watch with a mechanical watch a decade ago, and I have not wanted to switch back. The trade was not an upgrade in features: I gave up a connected device and returned to a watch whose main job is telling time. What made the change stick was deciding that I valued that simpler role more than the functions I no longer used.
Why I made the switch
A smartwatch earns its place by doing more than showing the time. It can put notifications, activity tracking, health tools and safety features on your wrist. Those capabilities matter when they fit into your routine; they are less compelling when they mostly add another screen to check.

For me, the appeal of a mechanical watch was the opposite: a focused object for telling time, without the expectation that I would charge it, check alerts or use its connected features. The decision was less about proving one kind of watch better and more about choosing what I wanted on my wrist every day.

What changed in everyday use
Charging became winding
An automatic mechanical watch can wind its mainspring as you move your wrist, and some movements also allow manual winding through the crown. Seiko’s instructions for the 8R46/8R48 movement family describe both methods and specify about 45 hours of operation when fully wound. That reserve is specific to those movements, not a figure to assume for every automatic watch. If a watch runs down, it stops until it is wound again.

Apple Watch battery life is also model- and use-dependent. Apple says the Apple Watch SE 3 offers up to 18 hours of all-day battery life under its stated test routine; the devices were preproduction units tested in July and August 2025, and Apple notes that actual results vary. That is not a universal battery figure for every Apple Watch or every wearer. Apple’s battery information gives the model-specific estimates and test qualifications.
Fewer digital prompts
Leaving the smartwatch meant giving up wrist access to its connected features. Apple’s user guide covers notifications, workouts and activity, heart-rate features, ECG, sleep tools and safety capabilities. Which of these are available depends on the model, software and region, and which are valuable depends on the person wearing it. The meaningful question is not whether those features exist, but whether you actually rely on them.

- [Mechanical Movement] This watch has manual self-winding. Please consider that mechanical watches that require manual winding can only keep time for a short time after winding. To prevent running or inaccurate time, it is advised that you verify the time periodically and wind up the chain 15–20 times.

What I gained—and what I gave up
The gain: a watch that asks less of me
A mechanical watch keeps its purpose narrow. I do not need to manage notifications or think of it as a health or fitness device. That simplicity is the main reason the change has lasted for me: I wanted a timepiece, not another place for digital activity to accumulate.
The loss: information and convenience on my wrist
A mechanical watch does not replace smartwatch functions such as activity tracking, sleep tools, alerts or safety features. If you use those routinely, switching means losing that wrist-based access—or finding another way to get the information. I did not find that trade-off compelling enough to return to an Apple Watch, but my preference is not a verdict for someone whose daily routine depends on those tools.

Mechanical timekeeping is less exact—and needs attention
A mechanical watch is not a precision time source in the same sense as a connected digital device. Seiko explains that mechanical accuracy is usually expressed as daily gain or loss, and that performance can vary with factors including how long the watch is worn, temperature, arm movement and winding state. A watch may run ahead or behind; the amount is not necessarily identical from day to day. See Seiko’s explanation of mechanical-watch characteristics.
That difference is part of the bargain, not evidence that every mechanical watch behaves alike. If exact time matters to you, consider the accuracy guidance for the specific movement and be prepared to reset the watch when needed. A mechanical watch also needs enough winding to keep running; the power reserve and winding instructions depend on its movement. Seiko’s 8R46/8R48 instructions are one model-family example, not a general specification.

Who might prefer each kind of watch?
| Choose an Apple Watch if… | Choose a mechanical watch if… |
|---|---|
| You use wrist notifications, workouts, health tools, sleep features or safety capabilities. | You mainly want a timepiece and prefer not to have those digital functions on your wrist. |
| You value connected convenience and accept the charging routine for your model and usage. | You are comfortable winding or wearing the watch, and with resetting it if it stops. |
| You want a device designed to provide digital features beyond timekeeping. | You are comfortable with daily accuracy variation and want a watch focused on timekeeping. |
There is no universal winner here. Apple Watch’s features are useful when they serve your habits; a mechanical watch is a better fit when you want a narrower role and accept its winding and accuracy trade-offs. My switch worked because the simpler option was the one I wanted to wear.
