Because a Wayland desktop can run legacy X11 applications through Xwayland, but that compatibility layer does not reproduce every feature of a full X11 desktop. An app that only needs to show a window will often work; one that needs global screen coordinates, system-wide input, unrestricted screen capture, or control over other windows may need Wayland-specific support—or an X11 login session.
Why X11 apps can run in a Wayland session
Wayland is not an X11 server with a different name. In a Wayland desktop, the compositor manages windows and display output, while client applications provide content for it to show. X11 applications, by contrast, expect to send requests to an X server.

The bridge is Xwayland: a real X11 server that runs as a Wayland client. An X11 app connects to it as it would to an X server; Xwayland processes the app’s requests and presents its windows through the compositor. A window-management bridge lets the compositor integrate those X11 windows alongside native Wayland windows. The Wayland documentation on X11 application support and its FAQ describe this arrangement as a way for legacy clients to run beside native Wayland clients.
This preserves a great deal of ordinary app compatibility without requiring each compositor to reimplement the whole X11 server. It also means that logging into Wayland does not guarantee every program is using Wayland directly: the app may still be running through Xwayland. Electron’s account of its Wayland work notes that Chrome- and Electron-based applications had continued to use X11 by default in Wayland sessions until newer platform support made direct Wayland operation more available (Electron’s technical account).

Why Xwayland does not reproduce a complete X11 desktop
Xwayland is primarily an application-compatibility layer, not a second desktop session. Its integrated setup cannot make every X11 desktop component behave as if the entire system were an X11 server. In particular, an X11 window manager cannot manage native Wayland windows in the usual combined desktop: the compositor is responsible for those windows. Components such as some pagers and panels may also lack a practical bridge to Wayland. The Wayland project’s Xwayland documentation cautions that compatibility with a native X server will not be complete.
This distinction matters when software depends on more than drawing its own window. Wayland assigns window placement and focus to the compositor and deliberately withholds global screen coordinates from applications. Apps cannot simply move, resize, or focus windows on their own. Features such as screen capture, global shortcuts, pointer-position access, and input emulation require supported protocols or mediation by the desktop and its portals. Electron documents these restrictions and notes that support for features such as desktopCapturer and globalShortcut varies with the desktop environment and portal versions (Electron’s Wayland technical account).

These limits are part of Wayland’s security model: an app should not automatically be able to inspect other apps, steal focus, or fabricate user input. The compositor and portal system can mediate sensitive actions, sometimes with user approval. Native Wayland support can also avoid the extra compatibility layer and provide capabilities suited to newer display behavior, but the exact feature set depends on the app and the surrounding software stack.

“Does it work on Wayland?” is too broad to answer without naming the app’s actual dependency. Use these distinctions:

| What the app or feature needs | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Display an ordinary X11 application window | Xwayland commonly provides the needed X11 interface and lets the compositor show the window beside native Wayland apps. |
| Use an X11 window manager, pager, or panel as part of the desktop | Ordinary Xwayland integration does not recreate a complete X11 desktop; an X11-specific component may not manage or integrate with native Wayland windows. |
| Capture the screen, use a global shortcut, inspect global coordinates, emulate input, or control another window | These operations are mediated or restricted. Availability depends on the app’s implementation, protocols, compositor, desktop portals, and their versions. |
The feature itself is not simply “supported” or “unsupported” by Wayland in the abstract. The application or framework, whether it runs natively or through Xwayland, the compositor, the relevant protocol, and the portal implementation can all affect the result. Fedora’s Wayland features tracker groups ongoing work across these layers; because tracker entries can change over time, check an individual entry and its date rather than treating the page as a universal promise.

- Identify how the app is running. Establish whether it is a native Wayland client or an X11 client running through Xwayland. The Wayland session alone does not tell you which one it is.
- Name the operation that fails. Separate ordinary window display from screen sharing or recording, global hotkeys, pointer coordinates, input automation, window positioning or focus, remote forwarding, and desktop-panel or window-manager behavior.
- Check the app and framework version. A toolkit or framework may have added or changed Wayland support, so do not assume every application built on the same framework behaves alike.
- Check the desktop stack. Note the desktop environment and compositor, plus the installed portal implementation and version when the problem involves a mediated action such as capture or a shortcut.
- Choose the relevant workaround. An ordinary X11 app may work through Xwayland without a change. If a specific feature is missing, look for an app update or support for the relevant Wayland/portal path; if the dependency is an X11-specific desktop function, an available X11 session may still matter.
There is no universal list of “apps that fail on Wayland”: an application’s window may work while one of its system-wide features does not. For a useful bug report, give the app and framework version, whether it is native Wayland or Xwayland, the precise failing operation, and the desktop/compositor and portal versions.

What GNOME and KDE have said about X11 sessions
An X11 login session and X11 application support are separate questions. Project plans about ending a desktop’s X11 session do not, by themselves, mean Xwayland or legacy X11 applications are being removed.
GNOME
In an update dated June 8, 2025, GNOME developer Jordan Petridis said the GNOME 49 X11 session would be disabled by default and described removal as planned for GNOME 50, subject to the development process at the time. The update explicitly distinguished the GNOME-on-Xorg session from Xwayland, which it said was not affected (GNOME developer update). This is a dated project statement, not a guarantee of how every distribution packages a release; check the GNOME version and distribution on the machine in question.
KDE Plasma
On November 26, 2025, the Plasma Team announced a plan for Plasma 6.8 to be Wayland-exclusive, with X11 apps continuing through Xwayland. The announcement said the Plasma X11 session would no longer be included, that KDE support for that session was expected into early 2027, and that the exact bug-fix timing had not yet been decided. It also noted that specialized screenshot and screencasting programs might need adjustment, while saying KDE applications outside Plasma had no planned X11-support removal at that time (KDE Plasma Team announcement). These are KDE’s stated plans; distribution packaging and release timing can differ.
