How to Automate Medium Publishing Safely: What Browser Extensions Can—and Can’t—Do

Automate drafting and checks outside Medium, then use its editor or import tool to review and publish. Browser extensions face a separate restriction under Medium’s Rules.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest approach is to automate the work around a Medium story, not the act of accessing Medium or publishing it. Prepare and proofread your draft outside the site, then use Medium’s editor or import tool and personally review and initiate publication. Medium’s Rules expressly restrict automated access through browser plugins and add-ons without its written consent, while its API terms separately restrict certain automatically generated posts.

Can a browser extension safely publish to Medium for you?

Not by default. Medium’s Rules say users may not use automatic devices or processes—including “browser plugins and add-ons”—to access its Services “for any purpose” without Medium’s express written consent. That restriction is broader than a ban on one particular extension or on automated publishing alone. Using a regular browser, or installing an extension from a browser extension store, does not itself establish that the extension is permitted by Medium.

Medium’s API has a separate restriction: its terms prohibit using the API to post automatically generated content, including posts, follows, recommendations, or responses that were not initiated by a Medium user. Do not treat browser automation as a workaround for the API restriction; Medium’s Rules address automatic access independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Medium’s API/Importing help page says it will not issue new API integration tokens or allow new integrations. Existing tokens continue to work, but this does not authorize a new extension or remove the restrictions in the API Terms of Use and Medium Rules.

Which workflow should you use?

Choose a method based on whether it uses a documented Medium workflow, keeps a person in control of publication, and respects the rights and attribution for the content.

Method What it does Key consideration
Prepare outside Medium, then use the editor Automate drafting, organization, proofreading, and asset checks outside Medium; review and publish in the editor. Uses Medium’s documented publishing workflow and leaves the review and publish action to you.
Import an existing webpage Creates a Medium draft from a webpage URL. Import only content you have the right to publish. Medium says the import adds a canonical link to the source and backdates the post to its original date.
Use an extension or script to access or publish on Medium Automates actions through browser access. Medium’s Rules restrict automatic access, including through browser plugins and add-ons, without express written consent.

How to prepare and publish a new story with human review

  1. Automate preparation outside Medium. Use your preferred writing tools to draft, organize, proofread, and check images or other assets without giving them access to your signed-in Medium pages.
  2. Open a draft in Medium’s editor. Medium says drafts save automatically as you write. Use the editor to review the text and formatting rather than relying on a browser extension to enter or publish it.
  3. Review the story settings in the publishing menu. Medium’s first-story guide describes options including topics, title and subtitle, a preview image, scheduling, and—if you are eligible—paywall settings.
  4. Check the finished story and choose the publish action yourself. Confirm the text, assets, and settings before selecting “Publish now” or another available publishing option.

How to import a post that already exists on your site

  1. Confirm your rights first. Medium says to import only content from another site that you have the right to publish.
  2. Open Medium’s import tool and submit the webpage URL. Medium’s import instructions describe creating a draft from an existing webpage.
  3. Review the imported draft. Check the text, formatting, images, and embeds, and make any needed edits before publishing.
  4. Check the date and canonical attribution. Medium says the import tool backdates the story to its original date and automatically adds a canonical link to the source. Verify that the source is the right original page.
  5. Publish from Medium’s interface. Review the story and use Medium’s publish action when it is ready.

What to do if the import tool fails

Medium’s import troubleshooting guide recommends manual migration when import does not work:

How to assess an extension’s permissions and data practices

Permission checks help you understand what an extension could access; they do not establish that it is allowed by Medium’s Rules. Chrome explains that permission to access data on all websites can let an extension read, request, or modify data on pages you visit. A permission limited to listed sites narrows that scope.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Read the permission list before installing. Ask whether each site and capability is needed for the extension’s stated function.
  • Prefer the narrowest access that meets the need. Chrome’s guidance distinguishes broad access to all websites from access limited to specified sites.
  • Read the privacy and data-use disclosure. Check what information the extension collects, how it is used, and whether it is shared.
  • Be cautious about unexplained broad access. Avoid an extension whose requested access is not clearly justified by its stated purpose.

Chrome Web Store policies tell developers to request the narrowest permissions necessary and require clear disclosures about user-data collection, use, and sharing. Those policies are useful for evaluating an extension’s stated practices, but store availability or review does not guarantee that a particular extension is safe or that Medium permits its use. See Chrome’s explanation of extension permissions and the Chrome Web Store Program Policies.
