A Steam game may fail to open because its files are missing or damaged, another program interferes, the game does not support your operating system, a required installer was blocked, or a previous game process is still running. The exact error message, your operating system, and whether the problem affects one game or several are the best clues; there is no single fix for every launch failure.
Start with the error and the scope of the problem
Steam Support notes that launch failures can be difficult to diagnose because users have different hardware and software configurations. Its general advice is to begin after a fresh restart, then follow the steps for your operating system. Before changing settings, note the exact error text and whether the problem began after a game update, a security alert, or a change to your computer.

- One game will not launch: focus first on that game’s files, compatibility, and any error-specific instructions.
- Several games will not launch: consider a recent operating-system, driver, security-software, or background-application change.
- Steam says the game is running: check for a process that failed to close.
- The error names a missing executable or platform: use the matching guidance below rather than trying unrelated fixes.

Restart, update, and reduce interference
- Restart the computer, then try opening the game again.
- Install available operating-system updates and update relevant drivers.
- Temporarily close non-essential applications that could interfere with the game, then test again.
- Check the game’s Steam Store page for supported operating systems and system requirements. A computer that only just meets minimum requirements may still have launch or performance problems.
Change one thing at a time where practical. That makes it easier to tell whether a step resolved the problem.

Verify the game files
- In Steam, open Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish. Steam says this can take several minutes.
If Steam reports that one or more files could not be verified, that is not always a fault: Steam says local configuration files may fail verification because they are not supposed to be replaced. See Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files.
“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”
This message generally means a game file is missing or blocked. Steam identifies antivirus quarantine as the most common cause for this particular error. Check your security software’s quarantine and restore a file only if you trust the game and can confirm the detection is a false positive; then verify the game files. Avoid adding broad, permanent antivirus exclusions without understanding what was flagged.
If the error remains, submit a Steam Support ticket with the screenshot and system information it requests. Follow the specific steps at Steam Support: Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable).

“This game is currently unavailable”
Steam recommends a sequence of restarting Steam, updating drivers, and verifying files for this message. The underlying cause can also involve installation, permissions, or network problems, so use the error-specific instructions rather than assuming the download itself is the only issue.
Some games run a secondary installer for components such as DirectX, PhysX, or C++ runtimes. If that installer was canceled or blocked by another application, the game may not launch. Steam says these installers are located in the game’s installation folder. Review Steam Support: This game is currently unavailable for the relevant checks.
“Failed to start game (app already running)”
This message can appear if a game crashed silently or did not close cleanly, leaving Steam to see its process as active. On Windows, open Task Manager and look for a hung process for that game. If you find one, close it; otherwise restart the computer and try again. If you use the Steam client beta, test whether the problem also occurs with the regular client. If it continues, contact the game’s support team.

“Game is not available on your current platform”
This message means the game does not support the operating system you are currently using. Check the compatible operating systems and hardware requirements on the game’s Steam Store page before trying other fixes. Steam’s error-specific article also explains that refund options differ depending on whether you bought the game through Steam or activated a third-party key: Steam Support: Game is not available on your current platform.
Linux users trying to run a game without Linux support through Steam Play/Proton can consult the community discussions or Proton bug database linked from Steam’s general troubleshooting guide. Compatibility is specific to the game and setup, so an unsupported operating system should not be treated as a routine file-repair problem.

Use launch options only if the game supports them
Launch options can override settings and may help recover from incompatible video settings, but the documented common flags apply to particular Valve games and do not work for most third-party titles. Check the game’s own support information before entering a flag; an option intended for another game may do nothing or cause a different problem. When to contact support
If restarting, checking compatibility, and verifying files do not help, use the support channel specified for the exact error. For missing-executable errors, Steam requests a screenshot and system information; for a persistent “already running” message, Steam directs users to the game’s support team. Steam also notes that an individual computer configuration may require help from a local PC technician.
