Proxmox Datacenter Manager: begin with the native overview
Choose Proxmox Datacenter Manager when the main question is how your Proxmox nodes, guests, and storage backends are doing. Its documentation describes unified status, health, and load monitoring, with a global dashboard that can surface resource consumption and failed tasks. The cited documentation is for release 1.1.7. This is the most direct starting point for Proxmox-level visibility, but it does not establish coverage for every other service in a homelab.
Netdata: host-level discovery of VMs and containers
Netdata’s Proxmox VE guide describes automatic discovery of KVM/QEMU VMs and LXC containers through Linux cgroups. It documents CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network collection per guest, alongside host metrics, storage health, and cluster components.

Install it on the Proxmox host, not inside a VM or container, if you want the cgroups access described in the guide. Netdata says its default integration configuration imposes no collection limits and is not expected to cause significant performance impact; that is the vendor’s documentation claim, not an independent benchmark. Netdata also notes that configuring the integration through its UI requires a paid Netdata Cloud plan.
Zabbix: API-driven monitoring and documented triggers
Zabbix’s Proxmox VE by HTTP template uses the Proxmox API and does not require external scripts. Its documented coverage includes node, VM, container, cluster, API, and storage-related state and metrics. Its triggers include an unavailable API service, offline nodes, loss of cluster quorum, stopped guests, and high resource use.

The guide expects a properly configured Proxmox VE environment and a monitoring user with appropriate permissions, so identity and access setup are part of deployment.

Prometheus and Grafana: flexible metrics and dashboards
Prometheus plus Grafana is a general-purpose direction for collecting metrics and building dashboards. For Proxmox, plan to select suitable collectors or exporters and maintain the dashboards that present their data. The sources cited here do not provide a complete current Proxmox deployment procedure or a validated comparison of setup effort, so do not assume this stack is simpler or better than a tool with a dedicated integration.
