Yes, Dark Souls has online multiplayer: players can summon help, invade other worlds, and encounter asynchronous messages and traces. It is also intentionally challenging, but how difficult it feels depends on the player. A secondary report puts the main story of Dark Souls: Remastered at about 26.5 hours; optional content and completion goals take longer. Dark Souls II and III belong to the same series and lore world, though the official series material cited here does not spell out how directly their plots continue the first game.
Does Dark Souls have multiplayer?
Yes. Dark Souls: Remastered supports single-player and online multiplayer. Its online systems are built into the game rather than organized around a conventional lobby and unrestricted drop-in co-op. The game manual describes cooperative summons, hostile invasions, messages, and traces of other players; some features require particular in-game items or conditions.

Cooperative summoning
Players can place a summon sign so another player can call them into a world to help. Summoning depends on in-game conditions and the host’s state, so co-op is not available as a universal, always-on party mode.

Online play also includes hostile invasions, along with asynchronous elements such as messages and traces left by other players. These are distinct from cooperative play: being online can mean encountering information or activity from others without having them join your session as a co-op partner.

How difficult is Dark Souls?
Dark Souls is designed to be challenging, but there is no useful universal difficulty score. Bandai Namco’s official page uses promotional language, calling it a game with “days of game play and an even more punishing difficulty level.” That describes the publisher’s framing, not an independent measurement. In a 2011 interview, director Hidetaka Miyazaki discussed the challenge of making difficulty demanding without making it so punishing that players quit.
In practice, the experience depends on how comfortable you are with deliberate combat, exploring carefully, and learning enemy patterns. Expect setbacks as part of play, but “impossible” is not an objective description that applies to every player.

Is Dark Souls’ story connected to Dark Souls II and III?
Yes in the broad sense: Bandai Namco presents Remastered, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin, and Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades as one trilogy set in a universe with deeply rooted lore. The publisher calls Dark Souls III the final journey in the series.
That establishes a shared series and lore setting, but it does not, by itself, explain how directly each sequel’s main plot follows the first game. The official material cited here does not settle that detail, so it is safest to expect thematic and world connections without assuming every game is a straightforward, immediate continuation.

Do I need to play Dark Souls before Dark Souls III?
The official trilogy listing establishes that the games belong to the same series, but it does not say that players must complete them in order. If you want to follow the series from its first entry, begin with Dark Souls: Remastered; if your concern is whether the first game is formally required to understand the third, the cited official material does not establish such a requirement.
Is Dark Souls a sequel to Demon’s Souls?
No. Bandai Namco describes Dark Souls as a “spiritual successor” to Demon’s Souls, not a direct sequel, and identifies Lordran as the setting for Dark Souls. The relationship is one of lineage, not a numbered continuation of the earlier game’s story.
Which version should you look for?
For the first Dark Souls, the relevant edition is Dark Souls: Remastered. The publisher says it includes the main game and the Artorias of the Abyss DLC. FromSoftware announced Remastered for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Windows in January 2018; check compatibility and current availability for your chosen platform before buying. The Dark Souls Trilogy collection is the official listing to consult if you are looking for all three games; its listed platforms are PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
