Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA Windows game can run through Proton on Linux or SteamOS and still fail its anti-cheat check because compatibility with the game is separate from compatibility with the trust system. Proton can translate graphics, input, files and many Windows APIs, but it does not automatically reproduce every privileged Windows kernel interface or security guarantee that an anti-cheat driver expects. Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye have supported Proton paths, yet each game’s developer must enable the relevant Linux component, ship its configuration and allow it on the game’s servers. If that work is missing—or the publisher considers Linux’s security model too weak for its threat model—the game may render normally while refusing login, matchmaking or protected multiplayer servers.
What “works on Proton” actually means
Proton is a compatibility layer that lets many Windows games run on Linux. Steam Play documentation describes Windows-only games as potentially working on Linux, not as universally supported. A successful launch proves that the game executable, graphics stack, launcher and basic services can operate under Proton. It does not prove that every external trust service can verify the machine.

Anti-cheat is an independent trust layer. It checks whether the game process, operating system and surrounding processes meet rules set by the developer or publisher. Depending on the product, it may inspect process memory, detect injected code, validate files, watch for suspicious drivers or enforce a particular boot state. Those checks occur before a match, during play, or both.
That separation creates the common pattern: the game reaches its menu, but the anti-cheat service reports an initialization error; the player can enter single-player mode but not matchmaking; or a server rejects the connection after the game has loaded. Nothing is contradictory about those outcomes. Proton has made the game executable usable, while the server has decided that the required integrity proof is absent.

Why Windows kernel anti-cheat does not translate automatically
Privileged interfaces are different
Traditional Windows kernel anti-cheat often relies on a signed kernel driver and Windows-specific interfaces available at a privileged level. A driver can observe activity that ordinary applications cannot, enforce restrictions early in the boot process and coordinate with Windows security facilities. Proton does not transparently turn those Windows kernel assumptions into equivalent Linux behavior.
Linux has its own kernel, module-signing rules, security modules and process controls. A Windows driver cannot simply be loaded as if it were a native Linux component, and a user-space compatibility layer cannot recreate every kernel observation without changing the design. A game therefore needs a Linux-aware anti-cheat path rather than just a working Proton prefix.
Visibility and threat models
A Linux implementation that stays in user space or uses a runtime service can be easier to deploy across distributions, but it may see less than a Windows kernel driver. The publisher must decide whether that reduced visibility still deters the cheats it cares about. Competitive and live-service games often make that decision centrally because one weakly attested client can affect every player on a server.
This is a policy and security decision, not a statement that Linux cannot run protected games. The same middleware can support Windows, Linux and SteamOS differently, and a publisher can enable one platform while declining another.

Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye: capability, not a guarantee
Valve’s Steamworks documentation states that Proton supports selected anti-cheat middleware, including Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye. The support is conditional: the developer must add the Linux library or runtime component to the shipped game and configure the title for its servers. A middleware vendor’s Linux capability therefore does not activate every existing game automatically.
Epic Online Services said in 2021 that developers could activate anti-cheat support for Linux through Wine or Proton from its developer portal. That removes a major engineering barrier, but it still requires the game team to opt in, test the result and set the service’s platform policy. A title can use an eligible SDK version and remain unavailable if its developer has not enabled the feature or if its server rules still reject Linux clients.
Updates can change the status. A game may gain Linux support after a developer changes its configuration, or lose access when an anti-cheat SDK, launcher or server policy changes. Check the individual title’s current announcement and support page rather than inferring status from the middleware’s name.

How newer Linux anti-cheat designs change the trade-off
Epic’s 2026 description of “Linux v2” presents a different design goal: restrict other processes from reading or writing protected game memory without requiring a conventional kernel module, while also monitoring cheats loaded by other methods. Developers can choose the older implementation for maximum compatibility or Linux v2 for stronger protection. That choice shows why “no kernel module” does not mean “no platform requirements.”

A stronger user-space or runtime design may depend on a trustworthy boot chain and kernel configuration. A 2026 Tom’s Hardware report listed the following Linux v2 prerequisites; treat them as current implementation guidance, not a permanent universal checklist:
- Signed kernel and signed kernel modules.
- TPM 2.0.
- Secure Boot.
- Measured boot.
- IOMMU enabled.
- Kernel-lockdown integrity mode.
kexecdisabled.- Linux Security Module BPF enabled.
These controls attempt to make the running kernel and boot process more trustworthy, compensating for the absence of a traditional anti-cheat driver. They can also reduce compatibility. Distribution kernels, custom kernels, firmware settings and user modifications may not satisfy every requirement. A machine can therefore run the game and still fail the anti-cheat attestation before connecting to a protected server.
What differs between anti-cheat approaches
| Approach | Privilege level | Developer action | Platform-integrity requirements | Typical compatibility trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows kernel implementation | Kernel driver with privileged Windows access | Ship, sign and maintain the Windows driver; enforce it in server policy | Windows-specific kernel and boot trust features | Broad on supported Windows versions, but not directly portable through Proton |
| Linux-compatible user-space/runtime path | User space or a compatibility-layer service | Include the Linux component, configure the title and enable the platform in the developer portal and server rules | Usually less demanding than a kernel-attested design, but visibility can be lower | Wider distribution compatibility, subject to the publisher’s threat model |
| Linux v2-style protection | No conventional kernel module; relies on runtime controls and system integrity | Choose the implementation, integrate the SDK and enforce its attestation policy | Reported requirements include signed kernel/modules, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, measured boot, IOMMU, lockdown, disabled kexec and LSM BPF |
Potentially stronger protection than a basic runtime path, but stricter hardware, firmware and kernel compatibility |
“Supported by Proton” describes a capability in the platform and middleware. It is not a promise that a particular game has shipped the needed files, that its servers permit Linux, or that every SteamOS configuration satisfies its integrity checks.

Why one SteamOS multiplayer game works while another refuses to launch
The developer did not enable the Linux component
The most common explanation is simple opt-in. The game may include anti-cheat for Windows only even though the underlying middleware has a Linux mode. Without the Linux library and configuration in the shipped build, Proton has nothing that can complete the check.

The server policy rejects the client
Some games allow the executable to start but require an anti-cheat status token before joining a server. The client can appear healthy locally while matchmaking or a protected server rejects it. This is why testing only the main menu is insufficient.
The game uses a launcher or service outside Proton’s supported path
A publisher may require a launcher, update service or account handshake that has not been adapted for Linux. Even if the game binary and middleware are compatible, that separate component can block startup or authentication.
The chosen security level exceeds the system’s configuration
A Linux v2-style implementation may reject a system with Secure Boot disabled, an unsupported kernel, missing TPM attestation or altered boot settings. The failure is then an integrity-policy mismatch, not a rendering problem.
The publisher’s threat model excludes Linux
After evaluating detection coverage, support costs and competitive risk, a publisher may decide that only Windows—or another explicitly listed platform—meets its requirements. No Proton setting can override a server-side policy decision.

How to check a game before installing or troubleshooting
- Read the current platform statement. Check the game’s Steam store notes, official support page and recent developer announcements for Linux, SteamOS or Steam Deck language. “Runs on Proton” is weaker evidence than an explicit multiplayer support statement.
- Identify the anti-cheat product. Look for the game’s support documentation or startup message. Do not assume that finding Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye automatically means Linux is enabled.
- Separate modes. Determine whether the unsupported part is single-player, peer-to-peer play, ranked matchmaking or all online servers. Publishers may apply different rules to protected modes.
- Check the date of the information. Anti-cheat SDKs, launchers and server policies change. Prefer a current announcement over an old compatibility report.
- Check system integrity requirements. If the title documents Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, a signed kernel or other attestation controls, compare those requirements with the SteamOS or Linux setup before changing files or kernels.
Troubleshooting when the game runs but multiplayer fails
Initialization or “anti-cheat not installed” error
- Close the game and let Steam finish pending game and Proton updates.
- Use the game’s Properties and verify installed files; a missing Linux component cannot be repaired by changing graphics settings.
- Read the developer’s support notice for the exact anti-cheat error. If Linux is not listed as supported, treat the message as a policy limitation rather than a local bug.
Menu works, matchmaking is denied
- Confirm whether the denial occurs only on ranked or protected servers.
- Check that the account is not being routed through a third-party launcher or service that lacks Linux support.
- Do not assume that a successful offline launch proves online eligibility; the server may require an attestation token unavailable on the current system.
Failure after changing kernels or boot settings
- Restore the distribution’s supported kernel and documented boot configuration before retesting.
- Review Secure Boot, TPM and measured-boot status if the game specifies them.
- Avoid disabling integrity controls to gain compatibility; doing so can make an attestation failure more likely and may weaken the system.
When no Linux path is offered
There is no general Proton switch that converts a Windows kernel driver into a Linux driver or bypasses a server’s anti-cheat decision. The officially supported choices are the platforms listed by the publisher. For a title that explicitly supports Windows only, that generally means using Windows or another supported console/platform for protected multiplayer.
Do you need Windows for kernel-level anti-cheat?
Not for every anti-cheat-protected game. Some middleware has a Linux-compatible path, and Linux v2-style designs aim to provide stronger checks without a conventional kernel module. You do need a platform that the specific publisher supports. If a game’s policy depends on a Windows kernel driver and offers no Linux implementation, Windows is required for that game’s protected modes.
The practical distinction is per title, not “Linux versus all anti-cheat.” Ask four questions: which anti-cheat implementation is shipped, whether the developer enabled Linux or SteamOS, what integrity prerequisites are required, and whether the servers accept that platform. The answers can differ between games using the same middleware.
What is known—and not known—about failure rates
There is no authoritative, comprehensive current count or percentage of anti-cheat-protected games that fail on Linux or SteamOS. Individual compatibility reports cannot be turned into a platform-wide success rate. The concrete Linux v2 requirements are prerequisites for a security design, not a statistic about how many games work.
Support is also subject to change as developers update SDKs, alter server policies or adopt new Linux security checks. Treat compatibility as a maintained feature of each game, not a permanent property of Proton.
The Bottom Line
Proton can make a Windows game playable without making its anti-cheat trusted. Linux support requires developer opt-in, a compatible anti-cheat implementation and server permission; stricter designs may additionally require verified boot, TPM and kernel-integrity controls. When those pieces are absent, Windows or another publisher-supported platform is the only officially supported route for protected multiplayer.
