In a seven-day test of Siri AI on an iOS 27 public beta, followed by three days of holding the iPhone Side button and typing requests, spoken “Hey Siri” and “Siri” prompts frequently went unanswered. Typed requests launched with the Side button were substantially more dependable.
That does not make Siri a fully reliable general-purpose conversational assistant. The same test found excellent results for precise CarPlay directions, weather, Calendar, recent photos, podcasts and recipes, alongside failures with orientation controls, follow-up arithmetic and visual identification. The practical lesson is specific: when voice wake-up is unreliable, bypass it and type.

What changed: the activation method, not just Siri’s answers
The test was conducted by writer Zachary McAuliffe, who has used an iPhone since 2016 but usually avoided Siri because basic spoken requests were unreliable. He tried Siri AI for seven days on an iOS 27 public beta, then spent three additional days starting Siri with the Side button and typing commands.

The contrast was striking. Saying “Hey Siri” or “Siri” often produced no response, even when he deliberately repeated the wake phrase. Starting the assistant with the Side button and entering text led to a much more useful experience. Siri still made mistakes, but the assistant was available often enough to complete practical tasks.

This is an anecdotal hands-on account, not a measured success-rate study. It also reflects beta software, so behavior can change before or after a production release. The test did not identify a specific iPhone model, meaning the result should be understood as an iPhone-with-Siri experience rather than a model-by-model performance claim.
How to use Siri without saying “Hey Siri”
You do not have to depend on wake-word recognition. The hands-on account used three entry points: the iPhone Side button, the Siri app and Spotlight. The Side button was the most successful method in the test because it gave Siri a clear, deliberate start and allowed the request to be typed.
- Hold the Side button. Press and hold the iPhone’s Side button until the Siri interface appears.
- Type the request. Enter what you want in the text field instead of speaking. Use a complete sentence with the destination, date, person or app involved.
- Review the result. For actions that change data, check Siri’s proposed result before confirming. Calendar entries, for example, could be edited before they were saved.
- Try the Siri app or Spotlight when appropriate. These are alternative ways to reach Siri without a wake phrase. Their exact presentation can vary with the iOS beta and device settings, but the principle is the same: open Siri deliberately, then type.
This approach is especially useful in a quiet room, on public transport or whenever speaking to a phone is inconvenient. It also removes one separate failure point: whether the microphone correctly detects the wake phrase.

Where typed Siri was genuinely useful
CarPlay directions worked when the destination was precise
Navigation was the clearest success. Siri supplied driving directions through CarPlay to regular destinations and to new cafés or restaurants when the request named the place clearly. Precise wording mattered because businesses with multiple locations sometimes required a follow-up clarification.
A useful request includes the business name and, when possible, the city, neighborhood or street. If Siri presents several matches, select the intended location rather than assuming the first result is correct. The test suggests that Siri’s mapping utility is strongest when ambiguity is removed before the request is sent.

Calendar could turn an email reservation into an editable event
Siri added a dinner reservation from an email to Calendar and let the author edit the event before saving it. That is more useful than merely answering a question: it connects information already on the iPhone with a concrete planning action while retaining a review step.
The review step matters. Check the event title, date, time and other details before committing it to your calendar, particularly when an email contains several dates or a reservation spans time zones.
Weather and relative dates handled everyday planning
Morning weather and calendar checks worked after Side-button activation and typing. Siri also understood relative phrasing such as “next Saturday,” which is important because people rarely frame personal plans as exact numerical dates.
For planning requests, include the reference point when there could be confusion. “What is on my calendar next Saturday?” is clearer than a bare “What is on my calendar?” If the answer affects travel or an appointment, verify the displayed date before acting on it.
Photos, podcasts and recipes showed useful personal context
Siri surfaced recent photos of the author’s son and wife, played recent podcast episodes and displayed a cake recipe. The recipe was independently checked online, which is a sensible habit for any assistant-generated result involving measurements or cooking instructions.

These examples show Siri working with information already associated with the phone: recent images, listening history and a requested piece of content. They are practical because the user does not need to remember a filename, scroll through a large library or manually search several apps.

Wake-word activation remained the biggest weakness
The spoken “Hey Siri” and “Siri” triggers frequently went unanswered. In some attempts, Siri displayed its icon for a long time and appeared to stall before completing a task. If the assistant does not visibly start, repeating the same phrase is less efficient than holding the Side button and typing.
Orientation controls were misunderstood
A request to lock the screen to portrait orientation failed in both voice and typed form. The typed attempt locked the phone instead, which is a materially different action. This is a reminder to watch what Siri is about to do when a command involves device settings or controls.
For settings changes, confirm the visible result immediately. If the phone locks, opens an unrelated screen or changes a different option, stop and use the relevant Control Center or Settings control directly rather than issuing increasingly vague follow-ups.
Follow-up arithmetic could lose the previous result
Siri sometimes mishandled arithmetic that depended on a previous number. A follow-up calculation produced an unrelated result after the assistant appeared to lose the earlier value. This makes Siri unsuitable for an unverified chain of calculations.

For anything consequential, place all operands and operations in one request or recalculate with a dedicated calculator and check the displayed expression. A conversational follow-up is convenient only when the intermediate context is preserved correctly.
Visual recognition depended heavily on readable branding
Object identification was not dependable when the item was recognizable only by shape, design or pattern. In the test, Siri generally succeeded when a visible logo or brand name supplied a textual clue. Without that clue, appearance alone was not a reliable basis for identification.
Use visual answers as suggestions, not proof. If the object could affect a purchase, repair, safety decision or health question, verify it with the object’s markings, documentation or a trusted specialist.

When asked for a game, Siri opened the game’s App Store listing instead of downloading it automatically. The author viewed that behavior as a useful safeguard. A download can consume storage, use mobile data or trigger an unwanted purchase, so presenting the listing first leaves the final decision with the user.

This illustrates an important distinction between answering and acting. Siri can be helpful without being granted permission to complete every consequential step. Review-first behavior is preferable when an action installs software, changes personal data or could have a financial effect.

A practical prompt strategy
Typing does not remove the need for clear instructions. It gives you a chance to make the request precise before Siri interprets it. The following patterns match the tasks that worked best in the test:
- For directions: name the exact business and add a city, neighborhood or street when multiple locations exist.
- For Calendar: include the event purpose and the date or relative date, then inspect the proposed event before saving.
- For weather: specify the location if you are planning for somewhere other than your current area.
- For photos: describe the person or time period you want, then confirm that the returned images are actually the intended ones.
- For media: identify the podcast or episode context instead of relying on an ambiguous “play something recent.”
- For calculations: include the complete expression in one request and check the result rather than chaining several dependent questions.
- For settings: use the exact setting name and verify the screen state immediately; if Siri takes a different action, switch to the direct system control.
These are reliability habits, not guarantees. Siri’s response still depends on the request, the available app data and the software version running on the phone.
Is the new Siri AI still in beta?
Yes. The described testing took place on an iOS 27 public beta. That status explains why some behavior may be incomplete or inconsistent and why the account should not be read as a final evaluation of Siri after a stable release.

A later software update could improve either side of that balance.
Who should use this approach?
Typing is worth trying if you already avoid Siri because wake-word detection fails, you prefer not to speak commands aloud, or you want to review a request before it changes a calendar, opens navigation or starts another action. It is less useful if you expect a consistently conversational assistant that remembers every intermediate value or identifies any object from a photo without textual clues.
For now, the best workflow is selective: hold the Side button, type a precise request, inspect the result and use a direct app control when Siri misunderstands a setting or loses context. That turns Siri from an assistant you ignore into a tool you can call when its strengths match the task.
